WGA writers' strike and the Star Wars TV series

It looks like the Writers Guild of America is going to be going on strike in the next few days. I've been wondering lately...
How is this strike going to affect the two Star Wars television series now in production?

Well Lucas is a big fan of Unions and that's one of the reasons why he shoots in Fox Studios Australia.
Gossip reports from TMZ.com suggested LucasFilm was interviewing LOST and HEROES writers. However Lucas and McCallum themselves said at recent conventions and interviews that were looking to hire writers from around the world, who are presumeably NON-WGA.
The Star Wars TV Series is coming strike or no strike.

Yeah, agreed. I doubt it'll make much differance.

It depends on the production and country I think- for example, Stargate Atlantis (and, presumably, Stargate Universe) will not be affected by the writer's strike, since it's done in Vancouver.

Honestly, if Lucas wants a successful LA tv show, he should prolly stay away from the LOST and HEROES writers. Couldn't get into Lost, but I Love Heroes, altho I don't think it's the right fit for a Star Wars show, especially if you're focusing more on the less mystical and mysterious (Jedi/Sith) character base.

Yeah, Lucas and the guilds aren't on the best terms.
Likely that the writing team has managed to loophole WGA guidelines to work for Lucas, or they are non-affiliated with the guild. Otherwise the current timetable for the recent news on the LAS would've been naive by LFL.
No...this strike will not impact the pre-production of the series. And depending on how long the strike goes, may give the series a good head start on rival projects being formed at this time.

That's what I thought. George does it on his own and doesn't want to be tied down by Hollywood.

If there's a writers' strike, then perhaps all the fan film directors and writers can write the SW tv series for good ol' Uncle George.
I'm sure at least a few SW geeks would jump at the opportunity to write a SW tv show.
We can do it. Maybe George needs a few more thousand ideas for "an awesome lightsaber duel" scene.

I just saw in YJCC that the strike is on. Let's hope it doesn't impact on the show.

I'm more worried about it impacting the CGI show. I'm not sure if their writers are with the guild or not, but the live action show doesn't even have writers yet (at least I don't think so). George isn't really a part of the studio gang like Paramount or Universal, so who knows.

Won't affect the CGI show.
Animated shows have to have stories written significantly further in advance to provide animation time...take for example the Simpsons...this season is about 4 episodes old...the animators are working on mid-season by now...the writers probably finished the season finale before walking out. They need that kind of time (Unless you are Trey Parker and Matt Stone working on South Park.)
I'd wager season one of the CGI is written if not in the can already.

I read somewhere that animated shows are not affected by the strike.

In all, the strike wont affect Lucas' writers. Lucas is an Independant filmmaker believe it or not. He does not like guilds and will stay away from them. He is a rebel against Hollywood. He wants nothing to do with them. He ran into negotiation problems with the guilds in the past in the creation of Star Wars. (He was supposed to put the credits at the beginning of the film and the end instead of having the big famous text crawl. Hollywood let it slide for the first Star Wars movie but they wouldn't allow it to happen again.)
Lucas would most likely hire independant writers or at least write the shows himself if it came to it.
About the strike... ontop of the enormous salaries for the writers which are about as much as doctors, I do believe that it is unfair that the production companies are dragging in so much money yet the writers who are the backbone of the shows only get a teeeeeny fraction of the profit.
Anybody got a Production Pyramid they wanna post?

I was hoping we'd hear from LFL by now, which writers have been chosen for the live action series.

Your assessment is in error- the majority of writers do not receive enormous salaries. They might sell one or two scripts a year at most, and the money from those sales is likely just enough to get by on in those cities.

ok, I admit those cities are expensive. But the writers for those shows are staff writers and make a salary. They dont just sell one or two scripts a year. (well, most of the shows are like that anyway). They keep writing the episodes for the whole season.
