Having nothing better to do after working hours this rainy weekend, I decided to catch the Spike TV screening of the Prequel Trilogy. I imagine that for many kids, this was their first viewing of the PT. I was curious to see what the presentation would be like.

Overall, I have to give Spike TV high marks for this broadcast. The films (although pan-n-scan) were presented entirely uncut, in HD video & Surround Sound. The image and audio were as good as you can get on television. The commercials were spaced pretty regularly after a uniform 30 minute opening segment of each film, and the insertions were made carefully, and didn't disrupt the viewing experience too much. Many of the commercial breaks were preceded by specially made 'bumpers', making use of preproduction art and audio clips from each respective film. That was nice - wish they'd done it for every break. The choices made for station promos was pretty poor, alot of violent 'reality' series clips and 'extreme' wrestling, not really appropriate for TPM, but that's a minor complaint. The specially made trailers for the SW 'event' were very nicely done, however. A special promo for The Force Unleashed was run right before RoTS; I'm not into video games, but it looks like fun, I'm sure any gamers watching enjoyed the short segment. After the large type titles of each end credit sequence passed, the rest of the credits played in a miniaturized box on the bottom half of the screen, somewhat sped up - a trailer for the next film in the series played on the top half, so it wasn't too jarring. Bottom line: considering what it was (basic cable broadcast of three 'older' releases) Spike TV obviously put some serious, basic, thought and care into their presentation. Compared to the heavily edited version of AotC aired on FOX stations, Spike's uncut version (which sprawled across three hours of prime-time programming space) was definitely superior.

I haven't watched a SW movie since last May. I have to say, the PT stood up stronger than ever. It was fun to watch!

I was also really pleased with Spike's broadcast, despite pan-n-scan vision tongue . It handled the movies with respect and with class. I can't wait to watch Eps IV-VI this weekend.

Can you even get HD through regular cable? I'm not really up to date on HD television broadcast stuff, but so far every person I know that had HD either gets it through digital cable or satellite.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well.

You need an HD source.

In order to get HD broadcasts on (digital) cable, you need a HD cable box AND your cable provider must carry that HD channel. I have Cox digital cable with HD and while it carries many channels on HD like National Geographic, Food Network, History, Discovery, TLC, HGTV, etc., it doesn't have everything. Unfortunately, Spike HD is one of the HD channels Cox doesn't carry in my area.

The situation can be very confusing since not all cable systems even carry any HD channels. My cable system does not carry any HD programing. I can get an analog basic cable package or a digital cable package. The term digital cable is often confused with HD. Digital cable is NOT HD but is only a type of compression to allow the transmission of more standard definition channels using less bandwith.

Many cable companies provide HD channels as part of a specific HD package and these packages may not include all of the available HD channels such as Spike TV. The HD channels are often scrambled which would require a cable box to get these channels. Some cable companies do not scramble these channels and HDTVs with QAM tuners should be able to receive HD basic cable channels. Most HDTVs built in the last two years should have a QAM tuner.

The unfortunate result of this confusing situation is that many people have HDTVs but they are not even watching any HD programing. HD programing is not available to the viewer and they do not even know it.

To watch SW on Spike TV in HD requires the following:

1. The cable or satellite provider must have an HD package that includes the HD Spike TV channel.

2. An HDTV with a QAM tuner.

3. A set top box (STB) if the HD channels are scrambled or not compatible with the QAM tuner or the HDTV does not have a QAM tuner.

I have to say, it was awesome to see all three on TV like that. I really makes the new movies "fit" with the classics...I have fond memories of watching the OT on USA network back in the day.

(Even though I've had each movie on video from day one, I still have to watch them when they're on TV and suffer through the commercial breaks. It's a sick obsession.)

I don't get Spike in HD, which initially seemed lame...but again, seeing it with fuzzy picture added to the "feel", again making the PT fit in with my memories of the OT.

Now that I can watch them all together, I will say that episode II is the weak link in the trilogy. I dug it a lot when it first came out, but it hasn't held up nearly as well as the others.

i really dont mind at all about the picture being in HD in fact i think the blurriness gives it a good feel, the only reason why i wanted to watch it in HD is becouse it would have been in wide screen. i cant stand missing HALF the picture when its in full screen! cry

It was in HD for me. It looked really good, a lot better than the HBO showing for some reason. Especially AOTC, the Genosis battle looked really good. I now remember why I really liked this movie in the theaters but hadn't felt the same about it since.

Yeah, TNT plays LOTR three times a day every other week it seems like (Plus they play the 'lesser' versions rather than the awesome extended versions). I can't remember the last time the PT was played in full that way, so i'm not really suprised that it got beat in the ratings. I didn't even watch LOTR and i'm a BIG fan (more into the books, but whatever), if i'm gonna watch it it's gonna be my extended versions where i can pause it if i need to go take a leak and not miss anything.

I'm liking this Star Wars Sunday thing. Last night was AOTC. It's pretty cool being able to finally watch SW on TV. I don't feel guily just watching parts or clips of it.

I'm a huge LOTR fan too, not as big as SW, and that's probably why I didn't watch any that weekend when they were head to head. SW all the way baby!
