See, i don't see that. Nothing says Luke never heard of his dad, just that his dad was working on some spice freighter. Him not hearing about his pop being this great hero isn't really that big a deal either. He's kinda limited to what his aunt and uncle (neither of whom knew Anakin very well) told him.
As for other people he knew (like Biggs) spilling the beans, far as they know Luke just popped up on the farm one day as a baby. Anakin spent like 20 minutes on their farm. Enough time to stop by and go "where's mom," borrow a swoop, bury her, trash the garage and high tail off to Geonosis (All of this before he was some Hero, mind) and i didn't see any Darklighters scampering around the Lars homestead while Anakin was there. They got no clue who his father was and i doubt owen lars would be in any real big hurry to set them straight on the matter all dark helmeted things considered. Besides, how often do you think about your buddy's absentee father?
Now, if during CW Anakin drops by the Lars pad and announces himself this all falls apart like a house of cards.

Uh....it looks like Anakin, Ahsoka and Artoo are stranded on a desert planet with what looks like a krayt dragon skeleton.

Anakin is there walking into Jabba's palace in the trailer. So unless Jabba has palaces all over with those same doors, Anakin's on Tat.
All they have to do is toss in a line like "I never wanted to come back here" with a forlorn look and all is well.

I'm pretty sure he'd be famous across Tatooine, plus his "poster boy" exploits in the Clone Wars made him famous across the galaxy.

Tatooine is not within the republic though. Would the people of Tatooine want to celebrate a hero of the republic? Plus I doubt the Hutt's would like worship of people and creatures other than themselves.

If Owen Lars is indicative of the non-criminal element in Tatooine then the locals probably aren't interested in the happenings offworld and probably more concerned about surviving and making a living on a planet controlled by alien gangsters.

Maybe you're right. But maybe you overestimate wartime celebrity (Who here still knows who Audie Murphy was? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? There was a time everyone here, no matter the nationality, would have known). You have a better case with the podrace, which i don't really have an answer for.

Every small town celebrates its war heroes though, especially if they are famous throughout the galaxy. Tatooine is not the desolate farm town it was in 1977, it has sprawling spaceports and giant races and festivals with stadiums filled with possibly hundreds of thousands of people from all over the galaxy. Though it is still on the outer rim, it's surprisingly populous, and with a high immigrant/transient population to bring in word of mouth from around the galaxy in addition to whatever news feeds they get. But seeing as the clone wars themselves actually come to Tatooine, any ignorance to their goings-on is impossible. Anakin should be the patron hero of whatever planet he is from.

As a lark i tried looking up Kingston, Texas, to see if they had a city hall website or something but was unsuccessful (the most i found was someone's myspace page and a bunch of biography sites). Kingston is Audie Murphy's hometown. Audie was the most decorated US soldier of WWII. Among his 27 US decorations was the Medal of Honor, the US's highest award for military conduct "above and beyond the call of duty," plus 5 decorations awarded by France and Belgium. He was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. According to Arlington National Cemetery records, the only gravesite visited by more people than Murphy's is that of former President John F. Kennedy. You'd think Kingston would have something to encourage highway-drive-by tourism or something.
(Incidentally, and i didn't know this, Admirably he campaigned vigorously for the government to spend more time and money on taking care of returning Vietnam War veterans, as he more than most others knew exactly what kinds of problems they were going to have.)
However, Cross Plains, Texas, (Hometown of Conan creator Robert E. Howard) has it's local hero plastered up all over the place. As does Hannibal, MO (That one i know for a fact, having been there, Mark Twain practically comes off the wallpaper there). So maybe Anakin should have written books.
If anyone with more patience than I wants to look it up, please do. Might lend some weight to the argument one way or another considering it's a real place with a real Hometown Hero.
