Kevin Kiner to Compose Star Wars - The Clone Wars
Kevin Kiner has been in Prague recording his orchestral score for the upcoming animated feature film Star Wars: The Clone Wars. This Lucasfilm Animation production will be released theatrically by Warner Bros. on August 15 and is the first in a series of animated Star Wars films, the others to be broadcast on television. Kiner has already scored more than a dozen of these episodes. Dave Filoni (Avatar: The Last Airbender) is the supervising director of the series and also helms the feature film, and George Lucas is producing. Kevin Kiner is best known for his Wing Commander score, and has also written the music for the 1993 horror film Leprechaun, the Star Trek: Enterprise TV series and the comedy The Pest.

I know nothing about this Kevin Kiner guy. According to this thread on FilmScore Monthly.com's Msg Boards, people seem to be pretty happy with the choice of him for this project:
http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=50106&forumID=1&archive=0

The only thing I can find about him on Amazon is his Wing Commander Score (I've never seen the flick) with sound clips here:

Hrm....very interesting. He hasn't done much according to his IMDBpage. I'm hoping that he has Williamesque sound or a lot of people (including myself) might be disappointed.

"I look forward to seeing them in action."

One silly thing I'm looking forward to is (hopefully) a release of the soundtrack, the "best of" for each individual season.

Thanks D_W! I've never heard of the guy personally, but it's good to hear that "more than a dozen" of these episodes are already scored. It certainly gives the feeling that we're getting oh so much closer!

So, we know that the movie will have an original soundtrack, but here's the thing: as for this guy having already scored a dozen episodes, is he simply re-using the music from the movie soundtrack, or is he actually writing new music for moments in the series? I would think it's mostly re-used material, as has been the case with series like the original Star Trek, some of the Stargate stuff, etc. I mean, it would take a looooooooong time to actually compose music for each and every episode, but still, I'm not sure. What do you all think about this? Another thing, will the series only feature Kiner's music, or music from the other six episodes as well?

Hmm...I didn't really find the Wing Commander score to be all that interesting, beyond the outstandingly awesome main theme overture, but that was actually written by David Arnold (which would , you know, explain the whole outstandingly awesome part wink ). I'd like to see how much he's evolved over the last decade, though- perhaps with some strong base material he come up with some good original music.

Keep in mind that those were hour long shows you mentioned. There are ways to get around re-using music by playing it in different ways so that it's not that noticeable. BSG does that a lot and I can't think of any time where I said, "oh, that's the same bit from ___". And hopefully this won't have the synthesizer sound that many of the video games use.

It'll be very interesting to see how Star Wars sounds without Williams. This could go two ways;

1. It's a complete disaster. Williams is the glue that holds everything together, and without him it all falls apaprt, because it just doesn't "feel" like Star Wars.

2. Its an exciting development that totally refreshes Star Wars and takes it in a new and exciting direction with music that is still in the mold of Star Wars, but someone with a whole new take.

I suspect we'll see opinion divide like this when the series gets going on August 15th.

We've seen some good material for SW that just uses Williams' work as a basis for original material, though- the Shadows of the Empire score was really quite awesome. If they can capture some of that magic for this show (or the live action show), I'll be quite pleased.

(especially if they include some random flashforward to Dash Rendar, just so we can get an extended rendition of his theme music- WHY DIDN'T THAT GET IT'S OWN TRACK, LUCASFILM?!)

wink

That guy's filmography is not too great--if you saw a crappy B-movie in the 90's, this guy apparently scored it! While no one could forget Laprachan, even a B-movie horror buff like myself had somehow erased Carnisaur from my mind, part of the barrage of straight-to-video horror titles that suddenly appeared between 1993 and 1998, and now The Pest is flooding back like a bad vietnam flashback. Wing Commander of course is a god-awful film.

To be fair, though, you only can do with what you're given. Stargate-SG1 and ST:Enterprise were okay, though they are really nothing special; I like CSI as a distraction, but its score--like every element in the show--is generic and repetitive.

I'd like to say I'm interested in hearing more original music pieces instead of just copying John Williams but I can't say theres any reason to have confidence. But you know, this is, after all, just a stupid television show for ten year olds, so I'm not sure why I should even be expecting anything different from this. As a feature film it deserves something distinctive, but I keep forgetting that this is just a TV series being arbitrarily released on big screens. I guess we'll see if its good, bad, or serviceable. Hopefully this guy will be able to make something that works since he'll likely be working mostly from John Williams' original pieces.

The Stargate shows actually have a pretty good amount of original music- the early episodes reused cues from the film score a lot, but the show developed it's own themes and cues, even a few songs (Beyond the Night being particularly noteworthy).

Other shows, like Babylon 5, also managed to have actual orchestral original scores for most episodes as well. I'm sure Star Wars will be able to swing it wink

I wish Joel McNeely was scoring Clone Wars his Shadows of the Empire soundtrack was outstanding. BTW are they going to release a soundtrack for the movie as part of the marketing for the film? I hope so since my iPod could always use more Star Wars music. grin

McNeely did a decent job with Shadows of the Empire, but I haven't been wowed by any of his other scores I've listened to. While McNeely has more experience following in John Williams' footsteps with Young Indiana Jones, I've actually bought at least one soundtrack of Kiner's (Wing Commander).

I'd be rather surprised if they didn't.

I'd be pretty bummed out if they didn't release a soundtrack. I love my Star Wars music and we only have 7 soundtracks (6 movies and Shadows of the Empire).
