Other composers besides McNeely have met the challenge of blending original score with Williams themes. Personally I think McNeely erred on the side of not using Williams enough. I think the balance should be about 60% original 40% Williams, because Williams IS Star Wars as much as Lucas is and you can't stray too far from that. It's also a mistake to quote Williams rather than incorporate him, and where McNeely used Williams it tended to stick out as quotes rather than being weaved into his own work, as though to limit the number of tracks Williams would be co-credited on.
1990s LucasArts games like X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Dark Forces used mostly original MIDI music with Williams themes blended in very well. The musical compositions were excellent but the sound was, well, MIDI. Unfortunately original music fell by the wayside as technology advanced to allow recorded music in games, but budgets didn't advance to record new music. Orchestras are expensive. So for example the excellent original score of Dark Forces was replaced with edited Williams soundtracks in all the Jedi Knight games that followed. Shadows of the Empire was an exception, getting a full orchestra because it was a very high-budget multimedia campaign as well as a game.
Later, with KOTOR, we got an original score performed on very good synthesizers -- not a lot of Williams besides the main theme and the Force theme but in the KOTOR setting you don't have any of the movie characters. Over on the Indiana Jones side we got another original, live orchestral score (from the same composer as Dark Forces) for Emperor's Tomb, a game LucasArts put a lot of effort into to. KOTOR2 also had a live orchestra but unforgivably the music tracks in the game were monaural (what were they thinking). What's made recorded-live music more practical is that synthesizers are now good enough at reproducing orchestral instruments that they can be used to "expand" a live orchestra that would otherwise be too small, and also to make late changes and additions to the score without getting the orchestra together again. Expect a lot of that technique in the TV series, it's the only way they can do the music on the budget a TV show has.

Well it looks like the soundtrack for the film has been completed and will be released on August 12th. It's going to include 32 tracks with a total run time of over 67 minutes. That's got to be pretty close to the number of tracks recorded for ANH.

Same here. I remember getting all excited everytime a new PT soundtrack was released. I also remember being completely angry when I bought the TPM soundtrack. I wasn't spoiled for TPM at all. So when I read the track entitled Qui-Gon's Noble End I was really upset.

Well I don't think we'll be hearing anything called Ahsoka's Noble End. I'm betting that she's not going to die in the film seeing as she's gotten a lot of attention as a new character. I don't know if we'll get anything spoilerific in the score, but we might hear something like duel of the fates for the fight between Obi-Wan and Asajj.
The more I think about it, I'm really excited to hear this score and his take on John Williams themes.

What could they really spoil, though? It's the Clone Wars and we know what happens in RotS and the decades after. By the time of the OT, we're talking Yoda and Obi-Wan. Ahsoka bites the dust soon enough, if not in this film.

I'm wondering whether there have been extraneous statements by GL or anyone else at Lucasfilm about the fact that Obi-wan and Yoda are the only two Jedi alive during the OT. I think Obi-wan describes the Jedi as "all but extinct."
I know that the conventional wisdom is that Yoda and Obi-wan are the only two alive but I am wondering whether we have any confirmation? I guess there's Yoda's comment to Luke in RotJ that when Yoda dies, Luke will be the last of the Jedi. But how would Yoda know that having been exiled to Dagobah for so long? Anyway...I agree that Ahsoka has to die and she has to die before RotS, ergo she dies in the movie.

The Clone Wars isn't going to answer that question. Jedi are still prevalent in RotS until Anakin starts calling them back to the temple and Order 66 is given. If anything, the question of who's still around besides Obi-Wan and Yoda will be answered in the TV series. That's closer to the timeframe of answering it.

I don't think she's going to die in the film. GL has said that he's planned for a hundred episodes or more so there is plenty of time for her to die afterwards. Plus, she'll be one of the main characters in the series and I think they're going to want to develop the relationship between her and Anakin.

Just listened to an interview with Kevin Kiner at www.scorenotes.com. He's already scored over 400 minutes for the TV show and is just finishing up scoring episode 22. It's also nice to hear that GL has been heavily involved with Kevin during the past year or so scoring the film.
I think if you listen to the interview you'll be even more excited about the score! I know I am.
Got the link of the TFN main page but the direct link is here. You can stream it directly from the webpage.

Just don't make the same mistake I did and go buying the soundtrack too soon, flip over the CD, and see track 8 entitled Ahsoka's Tragic Death at the Hands of Asajj.

Well since it comes out 3 days before the release of the film, I think I'll wait and see the movie before purchasing the soundtrack. What's another three days?

For a score fan like me, it's a lot.
