I read in this article here that when the makers of the series were looking to do the show, they wanted to go dark. I mean, this most recent episode wasn't very dark, but the way Filoni makes it sound, the show's going to get maybe more adult. I don't know, just how dark could a show on the Cartoon Network get?

Dave Filoni is more or less confirming that it has been Lucas that has made it kid-focused, and I'm pretty sure I read another interview with Filoni where he revealed that Lucas wanted the goofy droid humor, and Ahsoka to be cocky.

As we developed our dialogue with George [Lucas] in terms of how he wanted the story told, a lot of our instincts were to go very dark," the 34-year-old explained. "And he didn't really want it to go that dark."

As a result, the series intentionally moves back and forth, with light-and-fluffy faire mixed with darker, more intense stories.


EDIT: So I think as the series progresses, if Lucas stays more or less hands-off, we'll see an overall darker approach.

Then again, Dave also said that the Rookies episode was George's idea, so who knows....

I'd wager that the show will get darker as it goes on and the kids watching it get older.

As for how dark it will get, we'll see. Lucas sure didn't pull any punches with ROTS, so anything's possible.

That is a good point. Rookies, I thought, was pretty heavy. Fairly intense episode for something that started off so kid friendly. When he said the show will get even more intense than Rookies, I was a little surprised.

This conversation brings to mind an interview with Filoni in a recent INSIDER, where he said that different episodes will have different kinds of stories ranging from the kiddie fare (like the movie) to the darker stuff (like "Rookies") and just about as much as possible in between.

Taking that into mind, I think that while we may get even darker episodes in time, I'm sure we'll get the dose of the lighter kiddie stuff too. Not so much getting darker as things progress or the audience gets older. I figure as the audience matures, rather than the show maturing with them, they will begin looking to more mature EU (such as some of the novels, comics or even the LAS by then).

I also got the impression that he's "crediting" Lucas for kiddifying the show. Then again, Lucas supposedly has gotten more involved in later episodes of the show--and now we hear that later episodes get darker. And, as you said, Rookies is probably the most adult episode so far.

It's possible that it went like this: Filoni and co propoes their "dark" version of the show. Lucas says "this is just a cartoon, guys. For kids. Lighten it up". So they add in goofy droids and baby Hutts and whatever else. This continues for a handful of episodes until Lucas says "wow, this animation is great. As good as the movies! Why are you making it so kid-focused? Feel free to throw in a 'hell' or a lightsaber stabbing every once in a while."

Lucas doesn't strike me as the most consistent guy around. I bet he changes his mind on key decisions on a daily basis. I wonder if it drives the animators crazy?

I think there will be darker episodes. Episode 7 Duel of the Droids had a suprisingly violent moment which I won't mention here, but those that have seen it know what I'm talking about. I also believe that "Lair of General Grievous" will possibly be quite dark and end on a pretty negative note.

Yep.

I wouldn't mind them perhaps looking into the Depa Billaba EU story. That would get incredibly dark, but would be nice to see in the show - how she falls to the dark side. Plus, it'd be the chance to see another Jedi Council member in the show. Plus, in the cartoon we can witness how/when Obi-Wan Kenobi takes her seat at the council.

Well, to do that you'd essentially have to tell a version of the Shatterpoint story in TCW format, focusing on the issue of why Depa went dark ( Summertime War ).

And I don't think that's going to happen.

Well you lead character will eventually become the leader of the great Jedi purge participate in the murder of the leader of the Jedi Council, slaughter innocent children by decapitating them with a lightsaber and then cause death of his wife. I don't think it gets much darker than that.

No kidding. I have a feeling the Summertime War makes TESB look like an episode of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
