Premiere screenings tend to be attended by the stars of the film and other famous people (a.k.a D-listers) with special invites. The chances of Joe public being able to attend the premiere is very, very slim. That said, I think the film has had a few press screenings and one report I read last week said it was OK, but I'm not reading too much into that because every report I've read by said person is incredibly negative regardless of the film and I believe they have little to no idea what makes for a good film.
Sadly due to the sheer cost of the film, it will/has to be Americanised because that's where the biggest market is and therefore if the studio want any chance of making some money from the film (which cost a huge amount of money to make), they need to focus on that market more then any other. A shame but that's business
The real test will be how they deal with the second and third films due to the stronger atheistic nature, which really wont go down well in the US and could be the undoing of the film series either way.
Hopefully I will be able to see it next week.
I watched Dead Man's Shoes last night and what a brilliant film it is!! If it was released this year in the cinema it would have been a 'Film of the Year' contender. Very strong stuff, really well made, written and performed. If you fancy seeing something hard-edged and, of cause, British, then get this film now!!
It's good to see Shane Meadows hasn't really sold-out as a film-maker, but I'd like to see what he'd do with the last Harry Potter film if he were to direct it (but that would never happen I think).

I don't see why it couldn't have been given the English title when showing here. They did it with Harry Potter and Pullman is English so why not do it with him?

Looks similar to what has been before. But it does look to have some unique fun touches.
I liked it when Will Smith was playing golf on top of the SR-71 Blackbird (personally I would've tried flying it, it was the world's fastest plane after all) and driving a Dodge Viper through the city.

Saw Enchanted last night and it does what it says on the tin. Some very good CG animation going on though I must say.
Also saw Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium last week which was much better then I expected. Has a lot more going for it in terms of story and characters and while it is a bit of a weak man's Tim Burton-esque film, it has its own merits which it uses well.
I'll probably be seeing Golden Compass tonight and tomorrow, and I'm really looking forward to it. The only bad thing is I'm half-way through the book so it's ganna be a bit odd either way
I personally don't mind the title change and I actually prefer the Golden Compass name, even though it's not accurate. The real question is why is no one referring to the proper trilogy name of His Dark Materials?? Well, probably because parts two and three haven't been given the green light yet but that's the proper title the film should be having.
I'm also looking forward to I am Legend (also because we should be getting a The Dark Knight trailer of sorts tagged-on the front of it). Of cause Ridley Scott was meant to make this film many years ago but it never worked out sadly, and while I think this version will be more smoother-round-the-edges then a Scott version, I think it will be pretty good and scary and a worthy update of the Omega Man.

I watched The Golden Compass last night and will be seeing it again later today. I will wait until then before I make some kind of final judgement, but I think fans of the book will be disappointed sadly. The adaption is okay, just a bit too safe and the scope was far too small. You always felt it never quite reaches the top gears (mustering thrird gear at best) and a few wasted opportunities. Hopefully my second viewing as a regular punter will help, but a tad disappointed am I. Not bad in any way, just not as good as it could/should have been. Needs to have 30 mins added to it at least I'd say!

I was debating on seeing that sometime soon, depends how much money I need before next payday. As I have never read the book would it be something I would most likely enjoy then?
I should probably read the book but with how things are probably will be on my Christmas break.

I saw it again yesterday and I'm pleased to say that it was a better experience second time round but I still find it hard to rate the film anything above 3 stars.
There are two major strengths for the film; the Dæmons are done beautifully well and you can see where most of the time and money was spent on the film. Secondly, the performances are very good and considering Lyra is quite a difficult character to portray, Dakota Blue Richards does a very good job.
The problems with the film are that it's just too clunky, rushed and not the spectacle it needs to be. Anyone who's read the book will know what great potential there was for the film, but it just hasn't worked out. Sadly I think the director, Chris Weitz, was out of his depth on this one and I suspect he was mainly hired (and re-hired after being dropped at one stage) by New Line because he would be easier to control. Sam Mendes was once linked to the film and for my money, he would have been a better bet. I would also like to read the earlier Tom Stoppard script (which again was thrown out by New Line) because I'm a fan of his work (Brazil, Brazil, Brazil and most recently Bourne Ultimatum). The Mendez and Stoppard combo would have been great given their theatre roots, and that's exactly what this film needed a lot more of!
So all-in-all I think mistakes have been made and New Line got it wrong. The film will make money but wont go beyond expectations and so I do fear for the second and third films ever getting made (and I certainly expect Weitz wont be involved). I think another problem was high-expectations, and on that note the books are certainly worth a read. The first book may snag a little in the first 1/4 but once things get going, it's very good stuff indeed. The film is also worth seeing though, mainly because the other films out at the mo aren't as good (Fred Claus, Enchanted etc) but this could have been great. I don't think it matters whether you read the book first or not, although the film might be harder to follow without prior knowledge.
The Golden Compass
Not as good as: Stardust
Better then: Transformers
On par with: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

New Line are great as putting their foot in it. After all, they've dropped Jackson from The Hobbit film they want to do, which is silly.

Jackson getting dropped was down to a pay dispute over DVD royalties, but word on the street this week suggests he will be making the Hobbit for New Line and it will be made with 3D fully in-mind, along with a 3D re-release of the LotR trilogy. We'll have to wait and see, but New Line will hopefully see sense and go with it and, as I predict, ticket sales for The Golden Compass will be lower then expected, they may need the money, lol.
Slight foot note, the Kate Bush song on the end credits of Golden Compass is great
A slightly better choice then "my songs all sound the same" Enya

My annual Top three films of the year vote is now up on the regional forum, so please follow the link and have your say
The Top Three Films of 2007!!
We should be getting a proper TDK trailer this coming Friday (14th) and a Joker Prologue will be screened prior to the IMAX release of I Am Legend, which I hope the UK will also get. All looking rather good!

I watched the Golden Compass today.
I thought the effects were awesome, the Daemons were really great.
Well acted by all, including the cameo by Christopher Lee.
Its been a while since I read the book, but I'm sure in this film they cut the end off

They did. I was talking to a friend who recommended I read the book first because certain things were not explained in the movie but said the ending was cut off.
So, yes I haven't seen it because I am reading the book although doubt it will take me all that long to read.
