The film does end before the book as it was decided this would be better from a cinematic POV. But of cause things could get messy if Chris Weitz gets the chop.
The order of events towards the end of the film have also changed from the book. I think you could quite happily see the film before reading the book, and obviously when you read the book you'll twig upon the finer details. In some ways it's always better to see the film first as you will be less disappointed wink

The Bourne Ultimatum was released on DVD this week. Stunning, stunning, brilliant film and I'm currently half-way watching it with the Paul Greengrass commentary. His commentaries are very good indeed and well worth watching if you get the chance.

I have also watched Blade Runner: The Final Cut this week. While I was disappointed by the lack of actual changes to the film edit (just two that I could see), the quality of the print and sound are fantastic and the DVD package as a whole is the best I've come across. The nicest touch was a letter from Ridley Scott printed on acidtate and complete with one of his sketches. The Syd Mead art prints are also very swish too grin
There is no doubt Blade Runner is one of the finest films ever made (number 3 on my list) and this new cut, mainly for the quality of print and sound, is a fine addition to the BR catalogue. At last a decent DVD for Blade Runner!!

syd mead is a god.
is he still alive,i wonder...?
showmasters really should have him if he is,but of course, they aren't imaginative enough to contemplate getting him as a guest.

so,if blade runner is your number three...what's the number two and number one?
oh,i forgot it's showgirls,and at number one... er,is it...battlefield earth,of course?
is it?
am i right?
wink

Blade Runner is a fine film.

And I've not got a general issue with the change to the end of The Golden Compass. But as I recall the second book is pretty much a seperate story until near to the end, so sticking the end of part 1 onto the start of part 2 would be very odd if the film then veers off into having a different story with a different character.

I saw the golden compass today. I didn't mind it (think had so many bad reviews I went in thinking the worst so then seemed better plus hadn't read the book before) although I did find there were things not explained too well and felt rushed so going to get the book read over Christmas, somehow lol

Now that I've read the book a-proper, I'm not sure how I feel about the ending being chopped-off the film. I can't help but think they've missed a real trick and also can't help but think New Line wanted a "family-friendly two-hour film".
Thankfully the film has performed quite well in Europe which has made up for its poor State-side figures. It also received pretty mixed reviews here ranging from O.K to very good. Rightly so no one described it as being bad and obviously the anti-religious aspects narked the far west critics and perhaps the public. I'm glad it's done well and it's had another strong weekend imo, but I had hoped for more and with a bit of luck, they might do a bit more justice to the next one(s).

Syd Mead is quite an artists, I agree with you there Jamie. Lovely style full of atmosphere and little details. I'm 99% certain he's still alive and he would make a great guest at a show (we could always put-in a request for him but will no doubt get nowhere as per usual).

So, my top five films of all time. I would have thought number's 1 & 2 were obvious; Pirates of the Caribbean 3 at number 1 and Spider-man 3 at number 2 tongue
No, in all seriousness here's my top five:

5. 2001: A Space Oddyssey
4. Highlander
3. Blade Runner
2. Brazil
1. The Empire Strikes Back

I'm currently deciding upon my top three films of 2007. I'm pretty sure I have it finalised so will post it later this week.

That seems to be the general opinion, Jamie. I have seen the first five minutes which looked great, but I also saw some of the dodgy CG zoombies/vampires/infected people which looked rubbish. I think this film is more an American version of 28 Days/Weeks Later as appose to a remake of The Omega Man, only with a much vaster budget and yet far less successful. Should be able to see it properly next week though.

Did you see the Batman Vs Superman film poster at the beginning though?? wink

I did however have the joys of seeing PS I love You last night. Not my kind of film so it wouldn't be fair to pass judgement, but I'm sure things can only get better for the rest of 2008's films.

Other films I'm now looking forward to for next year are Jumper, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Indy 4, Valkyrie, Wall•E, Harry Potter ATH-BP plus the afore mentioned The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, Bond 22 and Sweeney Todd.

I will try much harder to see the smaller, more indie based films in 2008 but even the mainstream is looking far healthier then this year's efforts.

Saw Sweeney Todd on Wednesday, personally I liked it however Mike didn't. Although I knew he wouldn't like it but he insisted on going so really only him to blame there.

It is different from other versions I have seen but I do like this version I thought the set and costumes were great as was the acting which was to be expected with who they casted.

So, can Johnny Depp actually sing?

I see there will be a third Mummy film in 2008, which I hope will be as fun and action packed as the previous two.

I don't think it's singing as such, but it's darn effective and perfect for this kind of thing (based on the trailer anyway). I get the feeling this will be Tim Burton in his uber-element, and since the horrors of Planet of the Apes he's been on absolute fine form.

With Indy 4 coming out this year, I'm surprised they're bothering with a Mummy 3, more so with another National Treasure film coming out soon too. The Mummy 2 was pretty dire, and the Scorpion King spin-off possibly even worse.

Johnny's singing is basically what you see in the trailer. Personally with it being Tim Burton not sure if it would really work being a full on proper musical. I think it works well with the way it has been done because it has a gritiness to it.
