Apparently Lucas will be releasing the original, theatrical, un-altered Original Trilogy on DVD later this year. The release date, September 12, coincides with the release of the video game LEGO Star Wars II.

Info from the official site.

Excerpt:
In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

This sounds like the makings of another Hollywood Video and Game Crazy event.

Think you're confused? The video editing gurus over at originaltrilogy.com who do their own fan edits to recreate the original movies are going bats in their forum right now (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/categories.cfm?catid=9). What are they going to do with their lives NOW? happy

I's official...

Hell has frozen over and the Devil is giving free sleigh rides. tongue

I'm hoping "attractively priced" means cheap, because I really dont want to pay an arm and a leg just to see Han shoot first.

Hopefully with a little luck pigs will grow wings and a full six-movie set will be released soon.

As I said to Billy earlier, I have my doubts about their defintion of original. Do they really mean the 1977 version, or the 1977 version as it appears in George's head?

I just don't trust him. I don't. not_talking

From how it sounds, it might be the THX remastered version that was out on VHS right before the SEs came out--Lucas wouldn't be stupid and inconsiderate enough to just slap a crappy print of the movies on DVD. They were all extensively restored just so they could be saved from rotting away even before all the CGI was put in. But no, as crazy as I think Lucas is too, he wouldn't screw things up by pulling the wool over our eyes. Imagine the mob that'd assail him with pitchforks and torches if he tried to pull a fast one on us. tongue
