Hey all-
Hope the meeting this past weekend went well. San Francisco was fun, but more on that in a minute.

The main reason for this post is that my next library program, "Video Killed The Radio Star: The History of Music Videos" has had a date change. Turns out the Bellmore Library has a board meeting scheduled for that night in the same room, so I got bumped. It is now scheduled for Tuesday, Oct 24, 7-9. It's a drag that it got changed, since all their newsletters that went around the area said Oct 18, but at least I have more time to work out the kinks. The program is coming along well, but is light on metal and hip-hop. You'd be surprised at how hard it can be to get one's hands on Van Halen or Notorious B.I.G. videos; no, really, I'm serious. All VH has on DVD is live shows, and B.I.G. doesn't actually have his own video collection. Go figure.

So, highlight of my weekend--going to a charity gig at the Warfield Theater (picture a small Beacon Theatre with all the main floor seats ripped out, replaced with couches and open bars). The band in question was Camp Freddy, which rightly billed itself as "the most over-qualified cover band ever." Their revolving line up for the night included:
Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver)
Chris Chaney (Janes Addiction/Alanis Morrisette)
Billy Morrison (The Cult)
Slash (Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver)
Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses/Velvet Revolver)
Matt Sorum (Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver)
Donovan Leitch (son of folk singer Donovan)
Stephan Jenkins (Third Eye Blind)
Steve Jones (Sex Pistols)
Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray)
Lars Ulrich (Metallica)
Chester Bennington (Linkin Park)
Joe Satriani
Warren DeMartini (Ratt)
...and the drummer from Faith No More, who I have no idea of his name. I had to split at midnight, before Lars or Weiland came out (I was still on East Coast time so it felt like 3AM), but it was one of those rare shows that really was as good as you hoped it would be. For me, the best part was Slash and Satriani trading licks between Chester Bennington's verses on "Whole Lotta Love"--and I don't particularly like Zeppelin or Linkin Park either. The low point was watching Steve Jones grimace as Mark McGrath butchered "Pretty Vacant" by the Sex Pistols. Ah well, they can't all be winners.

It's fairly light on metal (no Megadeth BTW), as I have been organizing it by directors, showing bits from a variety of videos by various directors. That way, instead of saying 'hey, here's a bunch of videos by -a band you don't like-', I can show a greater variety of genres and songs. If there's one thing I learned from my history of rock concerts program, it's that library audiences surprisingly DON'T want lesser-known songs by famous acts, no matter how cool they are; they want the hits they're familiar with, so I'm serving up the good, the bad and the ugly [disclaimer: including music I don't like] in order to have something for everyone.
Plus it's more interesting to go by director, I think, when you discover that the guy who made the classic GNR videos also directed the Offspring, Neil Young, Tears for Fears, and Britney Spears. As it stands, the program skews a little too early 80s, but that was really the golden age of music videos. The 90s weren't that great but the 2000s show promise.
