I know the story is somewhere in the official extended universe, but I don't know it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? It's for the book...Thanks!

I'd be interested in knowing that as well. I wonder if that is covered in the new novel "Rise and Fall" which is supposed to be everything in the movies, but from Darth Vaders point of view? That sounds interesting. --Billy

I did some research in Wookiepedia and it turns out there's a number of different stories about how she got 'em, with no definitive take on it. This is 'cause apparently there's a bunch of different SW video games with scenarios where you try to steal the plans.

If I remember correctly half of the Death Star plans are stolen by Rebel agent Kyle Katarn in the video game Dark Forces. There is also a sub-plot in the Han Solo Trilogy about Bria Tharen(one of Han's ex-girlfrinds) being a member of the Rebel cell on the planet Toprawa that steals the other half of the plans and transmits the plans to Leia's ship.
