Live-action Television Series

It seems that sometime in the next two years we will be seeing a live-action television series come to reality set in the Star Wars universe. According to George Lucas and Rick McCallum:
1) It will be set between Episode III and Episode IV
2) First season will be written and directed by George Lucas and handed off from there, but George will continue to oversee the rest of the series
3) It will not contain any major characters like Anakin/Vader, Palpatine, Yoda, Obi-Wan, or Luke.
4) Rick McCallum (when asked about the main character of the series) said to "think bounty hunter"
5) Right now shooting for 100 episodes but possibility for 400.
6) If popular, other series could break-off and multiple series could be going on at same time
7) Could start as soon as 2009, but Lucas said more like 2010
8) Anthony Daniels is already on board with Daniel Logan (Boba Fett) rumored as well.
9) Hour-long episodes
I am SOOOO excited about this one I was thinking of having a weekly get together at my place or something similar for this

I agree. I too have been waiting on this for a while. Lucas has also said with the equipment they have he plans on doing for $1m what would normally cost $20M, and it will be the same style of young Indiana Jones chronicles. It sounds awesome. Right now it looks like it will be on ABC, ABC Family, Fox, or FX.
I had a bad Indy whopper last night so I don't think I will be eating anymore of them.

RE: Live-action Television Series

Apparently there is new news on the live-action television front. Lucas might be working on a Clone Wars live action series. This news makes me wonder if either they are working on two shows or scrapped the original idea and started working on this one. I guess only time will tell. Here is the article from The Australian:
GEORGE Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, caught many in the Sydney filmmaking community on the hop last week when he announced that he intended to make a Star Wars television series in the harbour city. The NSW Government was unable to confirm the news or even manipulate any publicity from it, which was distressing for an administration on the hunt for positive news.
But Lucas's right-hand man, Star Wars producer Rick McCallum, has been a regular presence at Sydney's Fox Studios. That alone should have given a hint that Star Wars would return here after shooting the final two prequels, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith, in 2000 and 2003 respectively. Another clue could have been Lucas's love affair with the city and its crews. As he told me in 2005: "I'm looking forward to coming back and working there some more soon."
"Sydney has some of the most wonderful film crews in the world and I've worked all over the world," he added. "I've always referred to Sydney as the most un-foreign foreign place I've been to. It's very much like San Francisco (Lucas's home town)."
And Sydney wants him back, desperately. After a flood of international blockbusters, including The Matrix and its sequels and the Star Wars films, Sydney's film studio has struggled to attract regular international productions. Two Sydneysiders in particular have kept the film studio occupied during the past year. But Hugh Jackman's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Baz Luhrmann's Australia are near completion. Fox Studios will be largely empty then.
Lucas confirmed last week at his Big Rock ranch outside San Francisco, the site of his new animation studio, that his live action TV series is going ahead. "We're in the process of writing screenplays right now," he said.
Although the series is unlikely to go into production until 2009-10, the Australian screen production industry can't wait, given Star Wars III helped propel the country to a record level of film drama production of $449million in 2003-04. Up to 700 people in NSW were employed for the first film and 300 for the second. A long-running TV series has the added attraction of employing cast and crew for longer periods.
The truth is, Star Wars barely left Sydney after wrapping filming here in 2003. Lucas's comments were a warning to the NSW Government that the ball was in its court. Despite ongoing negotiations, the state Government only needs to make sure the numbers add up to Lucas's satisfaction.
Lucas and McCallum have hired three Australian screenwriters to work on what is believed to be the first 22 episodes of a Clone Wars live-action TV series.
And in a daring creative move, Lucas has moved out of his comfort zone by hiring three Sydneysiders not known for science fiction writing: Tony McNamara, Fiona Seres and Louise Fox. The three have distinguished records in adult dramas, most particularly as co-writers on the acclaimed drama series, Love My Way.
McNamara is also known for his stage works for the Sydney Theatre Company, including The Recruit, The Unlikely Prospect of Happiness and, most recently, The Great; and as a screenwriter and director of the feature film The Rage in Placid Lake.
Seres has co-written recent adult dramas, including pay TV's Dangerous and Satisfaction. Fox has written for comedy series such as Full Frontal and Comedy Inc, as well as the acclaimed children's series Round the Twist.
Their commission hints at a Star Wars that's very different from the films and animated series. While Sydney has become known inside Hollywood as a top-class city in which to film science fiction - thanks to the expertise local crews developed on Star Wars, The Matrix and Farscape - McNamara, Seres and Fox have no obvious sci-fi experience. They're learning fast, though. All three were in the US last week attending a Star Wars convention and were restricted from comment by Lucasfilm.
The greatest criticism levelled at the Star Wars world has been its clunky dialogue, usually the work of Lucas. To be fair, a novel galaxy inhabited by robots, aliens and humans inhabited by something called the Force was not a showcase for sparkling repartee. Already there are rumours that Lucas wants a grittier, darker Star Wars for the TV series.
Lucas is under no illusions that scripting a live action series will be a doddle. "It's going to take a while because it's really hard to do," he says.
This week's release of the animated feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars is the second step in the extension of his Star Wars universe. After six Star Wars movies, Lucas is in his footnote phase, with Star Wars: The Clone Wars a prequel to Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and an addition to the animated series of the same name that has screened on pay TV's the Cartoon Network and will continue for a planned 100 episodes. As far back as 2002, Lucas was talking about the prospect of a series set between the second and third episodes of the feature film prequels, essentially away from the Skywalker family and expanding on the worlds of some of the bit players of the film series.
He began by establishing Lucasfilm Animation operations in California and Singapore, then - in an act of folly or supreme commercial confidence - produced 22 episodes of the animated series before pitching it to any broadcasters.
With rumoured budgets of $US750,000 ($855,000) to $US1.5 million, it was some gamble, particularly when no broadcasters bit. Arguably, the wooden animation of The Clone Wars lessened its appeal, although Lucas was adamant he didn't want photorealistic animation "because photorealistic is what live action movies are. Animation is art." The Warner Bros studio took up the series for its Cartoon Network provided Lucas would provide an accompanying animated feature film.
Clearly the investment by Warner Bros was an attempt to wrest Lucas's future series or properties, particularly the juicier prospect of a live action Star Wars series, from long-time distribution partner 20th Century Fox (owned by News Corporation, which also publishes The Australian). The Australian understands Warner Bros has helped LucasFilm do the sums on production in Australia, although it is expected to contribute as a distributor of the TV series only if Lucas again self-produces.
Lucas told sci-fi website io9.com last week that The Clone Wars animated series was a "test-run for the live action series I'm working on". "I'm trying to take Star Wars, which was a $US50 million an hour adventure, and do it for $US2 million an hour," he added. "It's hard to do that and have them look the same."
Indeed, it will be hard for Lucas to replicate his previous Star Wars successes with any of the upcoming projects. Certainly, some critics are already lining up against Lucas, emboldened by his flat renewal of the Indiana Jones series with Steven Spielberg.
"These days Lucas sounds like a museum curator, fussing with dusty memorabilia," The Los Angeles Times' Patrick Goldstein wrote. "It's time he challenged himself. If he has any inspiration left, he shouldn't waste it on exploiting something old when he could put it to use dreaming up something new."
It may be premature, but the appointment of three interesting Australian screenwriters to explore another Star Wars world could be an intriguing new dream of something old.

This seems like it might be a pretty old article, and things may have changed a lot since then. I say that because they talk about Episodes 2 and 3 as though they hadn't been made just yet. The live action clone wars could have been changed to the animated film and series we are getting ready to see, but I dunno.
