The Fan Film Thread
Hello! After darthmoic mentioned that he would like to get a fan film going, I figured we would need to place to post everything.
darthmoic - Count me in on making the fan film. My time may be limited now and then, but I am definitely interested. I was debating the cost of a digital camera not long ago just for this reason. I also have some friends who could possibly be interested in playing as extras, making or loaning props, or providing a place to film scenes at.
But, as you said, we need ideas, stories, and plots before we get started. Let the imagination flow!

Sound very good.
I agree on having a good history, it will definitely contribute to create a great fan film. When my friends and I used to get together to get into a miniDV some footage for our film, we couldn't get anything beyond a sword fight in the middle of the goods...
Anyway, all the process of trying to do was very funny and we couldnt stop laughing, so i will do it again, we may not get an oscar, but we will have lots of fun!

RE: The Fan Film Thread
I will be brave and be the first one to post ideas! Give me some constructive criticism here folks.
When it comes to fan films, I have always thought that there has been too much focus on the Jedi/Sith. Now don't get me wrong here...I love me some Jedi/Sith stories, but just think they are overdone when it comes to fan films.
So I always wanted to focus on the common rebels/imperials. Say, a rebel resistance to imperial occupation on a minor world. You could tell stories from the Rebellion or Imperial points of view. As an example, think of the resistance movements in World War II. Lots of material to take inspiration from there.
Another idea, do a story that casts the Imperials in a good light. Have them hunting criminals, space pirates, or some really bad guys, but not the rebels. Give the audience something that makes the realize that many people joined the Empire not to control the galaxy but to protect others and keep the peace. I think a lot of fans would eat that up.
Next, I had a more comedic idea of a bunch of traders/smugglers trying to make their way in the galaxy. Could have them run into just about anyone you wanted to. Though I have to admit, I think this would be a bit harder to do. Some people would actually have to act! LOL
As to actual film making, I have no experience so keeping it simple would seem to be wise. Here is what I think on that topic:
-Keep special effects to a minimum (no space battles, lightsabers, etc - but would definitely need blaster effects).
-Focus on action (running, shooting, etc) and avoid wordy dialogue. Example: Imperials chasing/shooting at Rebels through an industrial complex or something. More shooty, less talky.
-Try to go with simple costumes where possible. Stormtrooper armor is fantastic, but can be pricy.
This is just something to get the ball rolling. I am willing to assist and work with anyone on their ideas too. I have been wanting to do this awhile since I made some interesting Youtube films for work in 07. You can see them here.

Can you guess my inspiration on the second one?

You make a very good point about keeping it simple. Our neighbors over in Paducah have made some fine fan films without a lot of special effects or costumes. Funny stuff.

I have to say that this is exactly what I was looking for!
I think Sith/jedi fights are over by now, and all the ideas posted by Cungr_Vanck are the ones Im looking forward to shoot and edit. Maybe a small jedi fight, but not necessarily against a Sith lord, just a bunch of stormtroopers, and it may not be even the main character.
Also lets keep away from forrests and lets get more inside - I also did something in a greenscreen -.
So lets start it!

I admire your enthusiasm darthmoic. Alas, I believe we must be patient. At least until we get through the holidays/winter/recent economic dips.
Though one thing we can do is try to find a place where you can shoot film inside. Something with a bit of sci fi feel to it. That way when we are ready, we will have a place we can gather our resources.
Speaking of which, might want to put together a list of what we have and what we need together.

"Alas, I believe we must be patient."
A very welcomed Jedi Lesson!
I agree, i think there are two ways of doing this, having the idea and then finding the place to shoot it, or finding a place and then come up with an idea of the story.
I did the second approach on a 3D world. I was able to get 3D CG locations like bespin shaft, death star corridors, planetary backgrounds and I come up with a story depending on how i placed them in the time line.

This is a message to keep this thread in the top so it can be visible.
Also, it is a reminder that I have not given up on this, but just been busy lately.
In other news, showed my girlfriend the fan film Troops for the first time. She loved it! She also commented that we are so doing one of our own.

The Fan Film Thread
The wife and I went to Louisville Underground/Mega Cavern this week and I thought we might add it to the list of possible shooting locations. For those not familiar with it it's a huge underground cavern under the Louisville Zoo that used to be a limestone quarry. Back during the cuban missle crisis it was also a designed shelter for 50000 people. Currently Louisville (and Kentucky) use it to store road salt. Some years back some investors bought it and are turning it into a commercial enterprise as a storage facility (constant temperature) and office/business space.
http://louisvilleunderground.com/
They recently started giving tours and I have to say it's pretty unique to this area. It would make a good hidden rebel base or such.
http://www.louisvillemegacavern.com/index.php
Problems would include sound (it's so big I think the sound would get lost plus there's lots of trucks driving around), lighting (it IS a cave) and some parts are pretty wet (but that may make it more authentic). We might be able to strike a deal to film for free since the Underground seems to be trying really hard to get publicilty. We could tell them we're filming a "small independent film" (it's true) and we would thank them in the credits. Anyway, just something to add to our idea list and it is a pretty neat afternoon activity.

That place looks pretty cool, I never knew it existed. It does seem like a good place to do some filming and I agree with you that if you make it sound like they'll get some kind of publicity, they probably won't charge anything.

That would most definitely make a perfect back drop for a rebel hangar. Wow, I had no idea it was there myself, and I thought I knew everything about the Louisville area. Maybe we can get a few shots of O-B-Wans Star Ship in Indy, and overlay that into the scene somehow? But no matter where we shoot, I truly want to do this, it would be a very cool experience, and would be become a cherished family heirloom.

Sounds like a good idea. Question is, who here has a camera? Preferrably digital? I agree with xanatos, do a little comedy before we get serious(if we decide to get serious with the fanfilm). Too bad we all didn't have stormtrooper kits, we could do something like, how many stormtroopers does it take to change a tire(lol)? A fender bender? Or if we knew somebody who ran a convience store, we could act like we are robbing them & let the hi-jinx(sp) ensue(I envisioned this like the capture of the tantive IV, in a new hope.) But then we would need somebody in a vader fit.

Very nice! Like most other people here, I had no idea this existed in Louisville. But, as I have a day off next week, I know what I am doing in the afternoon! If for some reason that they would not let us film there, I bet we could ask some of the other cave/parks in the area. I think you can rent Marengo Cave in Indiana if you have enough people and they have great lighting. Also, there is a great cave in the Clifty Falls park that you can walk into for free.
I am also ready to assist in any fan film project. I wanted to start my own fan film this year, but life has gone in some great, but unexpected directions. Free time has been a rare commodity. But, things will settle down and I will do a fan film no matter what! Nothing can stop me! Muhahahahahahahaha!
Of course, before we start we will need certain things. First and foremost would be a script. Second, willing participants (I think we have that covered). Third, a decent digital video camera. Everything else can happen later (i.e. props, costumes, filming locations, etc)
Oh yeah! Starwars.com has the official soundboard where we might be able to get a few sound effects/alien speech. I recommend everyone go check it out.

I checked out the Mega Cavern yesterday...WOW. Most impressive and I recommend that everyone take a tour when the can. I personally loved the Cold War history of the site. For those who were surprised that it existed at all, the tours were just opened in April. So this is something brand new!
I have sent an email to the company who owns the place on the possibility of letting someone do some independent filming down there. Cross your fingers that we get a positive reply!
I felt confident in sending the email as I had a great script idea while touring the location yesterday. It would not be a comedy, but I think it could be fun. Basically, a particular mining operation starts having some of its workers disappear due to some unknown creature/reason. A jedi is sent to check it out and a clash ensues with the problem. Opinions and suggestions are highly welcomed!

Denied!
Just heard back from Mega Cavern on filming in the mine/cave. Here is their response:
"It is a great idea, but I would have to say that the security issues involved would not allow us to filming in the Underground. We have to maintain strict security for our tenants.
Thanks for thinking of us and thanks for taking the tour and spreading the word. Maybe we could help someday in the future, but now would be a problem.

Oh well...just means we have to film somewhere else right?
