Greetings from the Outter Rim! As some or all of you may already know, there's been some discussion of late on us beginning a book club. I love the idea myself, it gives me another reason to meet up with all of you. applause I've volunteered to head this one up, so what I have in mind is this: Meet at a book store once a month, one that has a coffee shop, treats, and comfy seats for our shabs to sit in, discuss the previous book we've purchased, after which we'll decide which one we want to read next. This will of coarse be a "Star Wars" book club. What I would like right now is some input from you guys on which book to begin on. There was some talk on going with the newest releases first, and there was also some talk on reading old titles. Also, I need to know what would be the best night to meet on for us.

We already usually meet on one Tuesday a month for our meet and great dinner out. Yum-yum! Love those nights! Sith like to eat ya know, we're very um....... "Passionate", about it. dancing
And it looks like our Lazer Tag games will also fall on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, giving us the cheapest game prices. Sith love these nights too..... it satisfies the um..... "Passion" for an adrenalin rush in us. Appo doesn't complain about food or war games either. face_whistling] Silly ole Storm Trooper! love

Anyway.... I'll begin first by asking you all about books. New Releases or Old? And which night would be best for everyone? batting

I'm surprised it's taken us this long to start up an official book club, we all seem to love to read and discuss so much.

Any night of the week is equally good/bad for me so it doesn't matter...it just depends what my work schedule is.

I'm good with either new or old releases. Maybe we can look at the upcoming new paperback release dates. If there's something coming out we can read that, if there's not we can pick someone's recommendation of an older book for that month.

Zannah,

Like I said, I'd be happy to help with this; be your co-chair as it were (allways two there are).

Maybe we can start a poll as to which book to start with, as it seems to me that other than the 9 booker, Crosscurrent will be the first paperback (other than the Clonewars Cartoon tie in books which are good too).

We could even alternate each month (or bi-month) with an era (PT, OT, Old Republic, etc).
My experience with Book Clubs is that it works best when the whole group gets to give imput into what we read. So, maybe a poll with some options would be best (we can do polls here, right?).
Some options could be:

The Republic Camando books, as we had been talking about them so much it sparked the idea of a book club.

The Thrawn books, the 3 that started it all.

Shadows of the Empire, an oldie but a goodie.

The Darth Bane books (bonus points if you read Jedi v. Sith comics) as prep for crosscurrnet.

The "Scaretroopers" book, or whatever the horror novel is, for Holloween of course.

"Cloak of Deception" is a good one for those politicos out there.

"Labrynth of Evil" is a good one two.

Also, other than a trilogy or maybe the RC books, those large epic 24 book stories are hard to discuss in a book club setting. True, I am biased, as I am saving myself for 2010 to read the new ones-- but when my old book club tried to do the NJO, we just got bogged down by the volume of stuff to read, thus not everyone was on the same book, much less the same page. We didn't really take about the books, for fear of spoiling the others.

Zannah, Mika, everyone else, what do you think?

Jammies

I think your simply...... INCREDIBLE DAAAARLING! Those all sound like terrific ideas. So, your asking to be my apprentice? Well now my dear. Indeed, I think you'll make the perfect apprentice. "One to embody the power, the other to crave it". Sounds lovely! Now to rid myself of Lord Bane. Mua-Ha-Ha!! angry I hope to see you this Saturday. batting

Count me in!

Like Jedimika, any night of the week is good/bad depending on what is going on in my life. So no preferences on dates/days.

I would recommend reading any book that is available in paperback. That keeps people from having to spend $25+ bucks if they wish to participate.

I also second the Thrawn Trilogy. Been years since I read them and would love to read them again.

I will also second Jammies advice. Stay away from the multi-book story arcs. However, if we have all read them previously and would like to discuss one book of the series in particular, then that might be acceptable.

As an option, I say that everyone nominate a couple books and we vote on what we want to read and when.

Okay, kinda a book question... but not really....

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cha_Niathal

We just got our first image of Admerial Cha Niathal! My question, why do fish women need to be depicted with human female attributes? Honestly. Not trying to be churlish, just wondering why?

IMAGE: Amphibian infants suckling. laugh laugh laugh I'm dying here!!! Oh my!!! Well, to get serious for a moment... the only way I can give any logic to a cartoonist giving a fish breasts, is to assume that for the individual/s in question, the attribute is simply...... irresistible. As a human female, I'll take that as a compliment. batting

Yesterday I was trying to think up the name of the crappiest Star Wars book ever. Well, today I remeber the name: The Crystal Star! And, I found this from my SW continuity hero, Abel Pena.

Edit:

I hate spoliers, so if you do plan on reading this, you may want to not read the link. On the other tenticle, I like you all-- so don't read this book, it is that bad. Keep in mind, though, back then we only got one book a year-- so we took what we could get.

Good question Jammies, it is kinda funny. But then again, they are walking around and talking like humans so obviously they have a very strange evolutionary history. And having breasts must've been beneficial to their lifetime reproductive fitness once they assumed their humanoid form. Of course, none of this has anything to do with why the artists/authors chose to depict them that way - just a possible retroactive explanation. It's probably just what Zannah said.

Ah, yes... Crystal Star... so awful that I cursed it from my memory and refused to acknowledge its existence.

This is very true, and explains my amazing tolerance for those few novels I might have passed over if it weren't for my overwhelming desperation for Star Wars literature.

Well considering I am not much of a reader like you guys are, I will have to sit this 1 out. But i'm sure from time to time I will make it to the bookstore just to hang out. Speaking of, is there a designated bookstore where the meetings will be held?
