Indeed, this is definitely something to keep in mind. The weather will play a large part in whether we go to this one. batting

Um. Well, those are good books too-- but not the ones for this bi-months's book club.

The books are:
Heir to the Empire
Dark Force Rising
The Last Command

If your pressed for time, there are comic book adaptations of each, as well as audiobook versions.

Best,

Jammies

okay, I finished reading the 3rd one a couple days ago and wow, what an amazing set of books. I was really impressed with the story and how everything turned out. Now I need a suggestion though, I dont want to go back to reading the NJO series because I feel that they are too far ahead on the timeline and I want to read up to them instead of skipping straight to them, so what do you guys think I should read next? I was looking at the Jedi Academy series but Im not sure. What do you all think?

I would recommend the Jedi Academy Trilogy. It was the next trilogy after the Thrawn Trilogy. Though if you can, read the Dark Empire series of comics first. It takes place right after The Last Command and is referenced in the first chapters of the Jedi Academy Trilogy.

Awesome! But okay, I found all 6 of the comics on ebay the only problem is that its almost $40 so is it necessary to buy these or could I just go straight into the Jedi Academy series and it'd be okay?

Edit - Screw it, I bought them anyway laugh

Oooo...I would have said pick up the collected trade paperback of Dark Empire, it's cheaper and available on amazon or you can maybe still find it locally at one of the area comic shops.

http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Empire-I-Star-Wars/dp/159307039X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254151846&sr=1-1

Careful there's also a Dark Empire II out there.

Darn, I already ordered the ones from e-bay. oh well. Win some, lose some.

Edit - Well I called PayPal to see if I could cancel my payment so I could get the cheaper book. and of course no but oh well.

Again, I am so pleased at the responce to these 3 books, I am glad everyone is having a good time (that's what fandom is for).

Kyp, I have actually given your question some thought. What are the "key" books for the lead up to the NJO?

Well, here is my two creds.

Do read Dark Empire, and if you like it, get the Trade Paperback of Dark Empire II (from amazon, or at The Great Escape-- they have 20% off days for trade paperbacks. I liked Dark Empire II, but it is not that important overall to the NJO story.

Next, I also strongly recomend the Jedi Academy Trilogy; Jedi Search, Dark Aprentice, and Champions of the Force. I think this is a good trilogy for two reasons; if FINALLY shows Luke as Jedi Master and it will also introduce "minor" jedi who become big deals in the NJO. Also, while it has been bashed by some (myself, for one, after too many corellian ales), it introduces Dalla, the Maw, and most importantly for you--- KYP!

Next up is more comics. Check out the Trade Paperbacks for Crimson Empire I and Crimson Empire II. It introduces an important villian from the NJO, and shows the state of the galaxy right before the Vong invade.

Back to books. Tim Zahn wraps up the pre-NJO Star Wars Universe with a two book saga; Spector of the Past and Vision of the Future. Very good books, and they really do set up the galaxy that is about to be slammed.

Finally, another comic. This time though, it is optional. Star WarsUnion. This is the very last story of the pre-NJO tmeline. It is a short little comic about the marrige (finally) of this one Jedi guy and this other Jedi girl (no spoiler's here).

(my above post continued)

After that, it is back to the NJO with Vector Prime, and if I could, another comic-- Chewbacca. It is an important comic, but, if you do not know why, I am not going to post about it here. After Vector Prime, well, I think the NJO was like, what, 22 books? Good Luck with that. I actually read the NJO twice, but, it took me a long time. The first time around, I had to stop reading them after the events of September 2001. It was just odd to have the fiction I use to get a way from the world mirror the world too closely (anyone else get that, or am I just odd).

I also want to read the new NJO comic from Dark Horse. It looks cool, and I finally get to see the ships from the books!

Well, that does it for me, and for the key NJO-tie ins. However, there is a ton of great star wars stories that take place before the NJO that i did not mention (as they don't really tie that closely in). First, my favorite; the X-wing books and comics. I think 8 books in all, they really give a grunt eye view of the post Endor war. I also recomend reading them, before I would pick up the book The Courtship of Princess Leia. I also really liked the black fleet crisis, and a few ships from that book shop up to fight the Vong.

Ok. Now I am done. I just hope everyone enjoys their fandom in their own way.
