Raiders is Raiders. It's not "Indiana Jones"
The Temple of Doom was to spit at the religious stigma that was automatically established as an Indy trademark in Raiders.
Each and every incarnation of the Indy series has questioned the hero's beliefs, except - you guessed it - Skull.
Indiana is open-minded (allbeit very opinionated) and willing to dynamically adapt given certain discernable circumstances.
This didn't happen in Skull.
Indy was on for the ride as much as he was intended to be the ride.
The themes and symbolisms in the original 3 were centered around questionability. Skulls did not share in this at all.
Indiana was cleverly typecast as Henry Jones Sr. with a fedora in Skull. I can definitely appreciate that sentiment .
However, Indiana doesn't allow us to grow with him, he grows without us this go-round.
He married Marion - I'm actually satisfied with that. The extradimensional/alien encounter did not affect Indy at all. Nor did surviving the Nuke test previously.
In the prevailing three movies, we're on some level, expected to appreciate Indy's process through which he finds at least the most rudimentary form of understanding on some of the most creepy, misunderstood, and mystical subjects.
Skulls just smash-mouthed aliens into a respectable hero, trying to top the un-toppable.
Skulls was entertaining, it was Indiana Jones on some low level.
It did not carry the essence of the previous three.
However, unlike Star Wars, this is STILL Indiana Jones. This was detached, but deeply respectful to its roots.
There is no denying that the main character was still Indiana - even in the last scene when he couldn't give up his fedora to the little accident that could...
Spielburg didn't allow Skull to be a piece of trash. Niether did Ford.
Niether will I.
Raiders is the best movie ever.
I disagree, Indy makes it clear to Spalko and her KGB friends that he doesn't believe in aliens, and then comes to.

Well, it's been about a month since the film was released and after seeing KotCS a few more times, I think it's safe to finally post my final ranking. It's changed from my initial post in this thread, but I feel this better represents how I feel right now:
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
2. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
3. The Last Crusade
4. Temple of Doom

I am a weird one when it comes to ranking Indy-
1. The Last Crusade
2. Temple of Doom
3. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
With that being said, I love each and every Indy movie.

Wow. Interesting that you put Skull above Crusade. Not sure we can go on being friends
I think my rankings have settled into this:
1. Crusade
2. Raiders
3. Temple/Skull depending on my mood
A cop out, I know

What? No longer be friends?
Well, in my defense, Raiders and Crusade have always been battling for the number one spot for me. And really, I'm still not entirely sure where to place them. I just so happened to like Raiders better on the day I put up my rankings. Although, I'm pretty sure Crystal Skull will always remain a constant in the number two post. Maybe I'm just weird.

1. Last Crusade
2. Raiders of the Lost Ark
3. Temple of Doom
4. Crystal Skull
If there were ever to be a fifth movie, I would just guess right now that it would be above Crystal Skull.
