Finally, I have a fic for the current challenge:

No Title, Unfortunately

Darth Vader had traveled around the galaxy most of his life in a variety of craft under numerous circumstances, but the shuttle ride from the Endor moon back to the Death Star--where his Master awaited--was the longest trip he'd ever endured.

The shuttle cabin was silent but for the ship's engines and his own respirator. Occasionally Vader would steal a glance over at the lithe young man sitting in between two stormtroopers. Luke stared straight ahead, his face as devoid of expression as a sabacc player's, his thoughts closed to Vader's probing.

He is an enigma to me, Vader mused. He believes I can be turned. He does not know that once you heed the Dark Side's call, one can never go back. He will even let himself be destroyed for my sake. Naive boy.

He does not want power. I cannot understand that. Everyone wants power. This boy--my son--only wants his father.

There may have been a time when Vader might have fully understood that need, but it was long ago.

*You're wrong. You do understand that need.*

I can't be a father to him now, not the way he wants it, Vader's thoughts argued back. It's too late. Too much has happened.

*He's there for you. All you have to do is reach out to him. He'll forgive you.*

He stole yet another glance at Luke.

There is no forgiveness. This is what I am.

The discussion thread thrilled me so much, I couldn't help but jump in.

This story takes place during ESB, and although Luke doesn't show up, I still maintain that this is Vader/Luke.

Harsh Lessons

Darth Vader was in his meditation chamber on his flagship Executor when he felt a faint ripple in the Force. A slight twitch in the corner of his mouth was his only response. In another man, in another time, it might have been a smile.

For the ripple meant that he was coming: Luke Skywalker, hero of the Rebellion, the last Jedi.

My son, Darth Vader thought. He comes.

And why should he not? Even now, the boy's companions were being tortured. And while the interrogators had numerous questions regarding Rebel activities, Vader could not care less whether or not those questions were answered. As far as he was concerned, their torture was for the sole purpose of causing pain, so that their cries would call Luke to their side.

Once he was here, Luke would no doubt attempt to rescue his friends from death in the hands of the Empire. And in doing so, he would deliver himself directly into Darth Vader's hands.

With Obi-Wan dead, there is no-one here who will stand in my way, Vader thought grimly. And no matter how strong he is in the Force, the powers of the dark side are stronger. He will see the futility of resistance, and then -

And then what? Give in to the dark side in rage and despair like Anakin had, so long ago on Tatooine?

The memory sent pangs of pain through Vader's chest that had nothing to do with his damaged lungs. He recalled his mother Shmi, who had hung on to life just long enough to say good-bye to her son. In his rage and anguish he had slaughtered the Tusken Raiders like the animals they were, knowing it would not bring Shmi back, knowing she would not approve of his revenge, knowing he was going against everything the Jedi Masters had taught him - and not caring.

Hopefully, his son would not need his friends' deaths to understand the lesson Vader had learned that day: that power was the only way to keep the ones closest to you from harm, and that peace could only be brought about by imposing a strict and rigid order on the lesser beings of the galaxy.

The Jedi Council had been weak, not daring to take command of those for whom the Force was just another religion. The Emperor, while strong and knowledgeable in the ways of the Sith, had allowed the Empire to become as corrupt as the Senate had been. In Vader's eyes, they had both failed.

His reign would not. With his son at his side, he would finally bring peace to the galaxy. And should any oppose them -

They will not, Darth Vader concluded. As even the Emperor will not be able to stand in our way.

Although sealed in his meditation chamber, nevertheless Darth Vader's eyes sought out the stars, and a boy who was coming to meet his destiny.

I will not fail you, my son . . .

Whoa. shock Great last two fics!!!!

VaderLVR - wonderful Leia and Vader moment!!!! Leia was too cute! And so Leia. grin I love Leia/Vader stories!

Kristeh - Wonderful! applause Very poignant. Great Luke/Vader story, as usual. grin I love those too!! I just love "Anakin gets to spend time with his kids" stories period!

Miss Padme - I've always wondered what Vader was thinking while they were all there together - just them and the stormtroopers. (Who had to be going - "What the heck is going on HERE?") Great Vader!

lazykbys - Great Vader characterization!!! shock It sounds like exactly what would have been going through this mind during that point in ESB!

Here is my pitiful entry for the "Turning" challenge. This is what came to mind, inspired by the wonderful picture from the trailer...

I am the Darkness

“Search your feelings,” he said. “You know it to be true.”

I flinched away from his words, unable to help myself. The pain that flared to life upon hearing them rivaled the agony of losing my hand. How much more does it hurt to have your heart ripped out than to have a limb sliced from your body? More, much more.

“No,” the word was dragged from me. “I don’t believe you.” But I did believe. His words confirmed every insecurity I had ever harbored.

“Of course you believe me, Anakin,” he said smoothly. “For you recognize the truth.”

“She wouldn’t do that!” I shouted the words. Perhaps the volume of my scream will drown out the mocking laughter that echoes in my head.

“Oh, Anakin, don’t do this to yourself,” he said, regret spiraling in the air between us.

“She loves me,” I insisted.

“Of course she does,” he soothed, like a parent quoting platitudes to a fearful child. “But she is weak…” he let the thought hang there.

”No,” I growled one final time. “She would not betray me.”

“She doesn’t understand you any longer,” he whispered. My pulse beat faster because I knew that was true. I had become a creature beyond her comprehension.

“But she loves me.” Even I heard the disbelief in my voice. “We’re going to be parents.”

“If she loves you so much then why did she leave you and take your children with her?”

I did not answer that question, for I could not. Even now my heart was frozen at the thought of her betrayal. She had left me alone, at the mercy of the darkness that even now crowded in upon me, clamoring for me to become one with it.

I finally looked up at him. “You don’t understand,” I forced the words past the lump that now lived in my throat. “Without her I have nothing, I am nothing.” There, the truth was out. He would see me for the pitiful being I was. Just a slave…

“You’re wrong,” he murmured as he came close to me. “You’re so very wrong.” He paused and then spoke again. His voice was different now, deeper and darker than it had ever been. “Pure power is yours for the taking, Anakin. All you have to do is ask for it.”

“What do you mean?” I grasped at the possibility that something might be left. I was a drowning man and just before going under for the last time, rescue might be at hand.

“You don’t think I’ve become this powerful because I’m a good politician, do you?” He chuckled quietly and I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. His laughter was an ugly and compelling sound. “My boy, I too can use the Force.” And with those words he reached into my mind; it was unmistakably a manipulation of the Force. He punched ruthlessly through my thoughts, stabbing into my very soul.

How could I have missed that? How could the Jedi have remained ignorant of this man’s power? I was amazed once more at their ignorance, their willful blindness.

“Feel what true power is, Anakin,” he said as he guided me through the shadowlands for the first time. “Do you see? Do you feel it? This is the true face of the Force, the one that can make you more powerful than any Jedi.”

I could not breathe. My body began to shut down in the face of the sheer majesty of it. It was beautiful and cold and I wanted it.

He took it away then, leaving me thirsting for it. A need grew inside of me, and it howled in protest at the loss.

“It could all be yours, Anakin,” The words were soft and seductive.

It would be so easy to just follow him and leave behind everything that had plagued me since Master Qui-Gon whisked me away from the sands of Tatooine.

I turned away from him, unable to bear the ache within as I contemplated what he offered. So much was there! So much of everything I had always desired. Power, prestige, esteem…all of it was there in his hands, the ones he held out to me.

Everything you wanted? A dark and familiar voice mocked. What about her?

I snarled at the intrusion. The voice that called to me had been uneasy of late; it twitched and moaned as I vacillated between the light and dark. It hissed at me, commanding me to give myself to the shadows and be done with it.

He waited for my answer, knowing that his gift was singing its dark song to me. He had sensed the wildness within me, the twilight shadows that followed my every step.

“You could be more powerful than you ever imagined,” he told me.

Power. Even the sound of the word was magical to me. It caressed my ears and made my gut clench in anticipation.

I was a creature of the dark; the voice had assured me that this was so.

I closed my eyes as I let the sweetness of it rush over me. But I was not lost in it, not yet. And I was determined that this once, I would take charge of my own fate, that I alone would choose the path I would set my feet upon.

But even without sight, I could sense the light and shadows. Within the light was where she dwelled. She stood there, just out of my sight, worshipped by the light that embraced her. If I claimed the light, I would win the right to her love once more.

Could you live a lie? I heard her words echo back to me through time. But what would be the lie, to love her or to love the darkness?

And beyond her, bleeding into a dark horizon, were the shadows that called to me.

Theirs was a stark and dismal beauty and I longed for them. Even more than the warmth of her arms, I yearned for the intoxicating power they represented. But I knew that once I gave myself up to the darkness I would be forever condemned to wander in those shadowlands.

Did I have the strength to leave behind the light forever?

In a way, my fall would be her fault. She had left me alone, abandoned me to the questionable mercy of the Force. And I had discovered, in the days since she fled, that my grip on the light was far too weak if she was not there to strengthen me.

Each day without her had let a little more of Anakin Skywalker drift away, for she was no longer there to anchor him to my skin. What was left behind was nothing she would have recognized.

I can’t live like this, Anakin. You’ve changed. Those had been her last words to me before she turned her back on me and took my children.

Had I changed, or had I merely revealed the truth? It did not matter, for she was gone.

If I could not have her, if I could not have her love and our family, then I would content myself with something more.

There was no decision to be made, really. I had made my choice long ago when I first invited the darkness to seep into my soul and take root. Those delicate tendrils had grown and become stronger with the passage of time. I fed them with hatred and anger and now they were ready to deliver me unto the darkness.

So be it.

I knelt before him, bowing my head for the first time as the transformed being I had become.

I felt his hand lower to my shoulder, where he squeezed it proprietarily for a moment. And in that moment I had my first inkling of how completely I had given myself over to the ebony void.

I felt the shadows descend upon me; I quivered in their cold embrace. No turning back now. I was the darkness and the darkness was me.

“Rise, Lord Vader,” he commanded.

And I did.

Okay, here's my entry for the "Turning" challenge. It takes place on board the burning ship in case anyone's interested.

edit: Ach! Typos!

Trapped

The walls shook as the Corusca Gem took another turbolaser blast from the attackers.

"We're doomed!" C-3PO moaned, and was hushed by Padmé.

Chancellor Palpatine sat on a couch in the middle of the room, a hint of fear showing on his usually serene face. "It's the Separatists," he said. "It must be. Only they would dare."

Anakin burst into the room, his face dark with concern. He took several quick glances as he checked for threats, relaxing only when he saw Padmé and the Chancellor were all right.

"You can't stay here," he told them. "There's too many of them. Master Kenobi said he'd hold them off for as long as he could, but I don't think we have much time. We have to get to the escape pods, now."

As he said those words, there was a high-pitched whine followed by what sounded like a dozen blasters shooting simultaneously. R2-D2 let out a series of whistles and beeps that C-3PO translated as: "Oh my! Artoo says they're using directional stun grenades!"

Anakin grimaced. A stun grenade emitted waves of energy that could paralyze most life forms. Unlike stun bolts from a blaster, they could not be deflected by a lightsaber.

They came prepared for Jedi, he thought grimly.

He glanced over at Padmé, who already had a blaster in her hand. She offered another to Chancellor Palpatine who shook his head; he wasn't rated on weapons of any kind.

R2-D2 called up the schematics of the Corusca Gem and displayed them as a hologram. They showed what Anakin had been afraid of: the only way to the escape pods was blocked by the Separatist troops.

Of course, there were always other ways available to a Jedi Knight. He unclipped his lightsaber and ignited it as he strode to a certain corner of the room. He wished he didn't have to say the next half-dozen words, but even a Jedi couldn't be in two places at the same time. "Padmé, make sure nobody comes in."

She nodded and went to the open door. There was no way of closing it now; safety regulations required that all doors on atmospheric craft open automatically in the event of an emergency. She poked her head and blaster out the doorway, ready to shoot at any face that appeared.

Anakin made a hole in the floor as quickly as he could. He winced as the durasteel plating soon dropped to the deck below it with a clang, then reached out with his mind to make sure there were no troops waiting in ambush.

"Padmé!" he called out. "You go first, just in case. The Chancellor goes next, then me last." He looked at the droids and gave them an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, but you two will have to stay here. I could lift you down with the Force, but it would take too much time."

R2-D2 beeped understanding. "Do be careful, Master Anakin," C-3PO said.

"Thanks, Threepio. I will."

The three humans waited only until the edges of the hole had stopped glowing red, then lowered themselves one by one. Anakin waited until the last second to turn off his lightsaber, then jumped into the room below them.

Only to find himself face to face with Count Dooku and a handful of his men.

"Dooku!" he said. "But how -"

"The Sith have ways of masking our presence from the Force," Dooku explained smugly. "If you surrender quietly, I will see to it no harm comes to the Senator."

Anakin looked at Padmé. She was standing with a blaster pointed at her back but seemed unharmed.

"Do not make me repeat myself," Dooku said sternly. "Surrender now, or she will suffer."

Padmé's eyes were like two small supernovas burning into Anakin's mind. Don't give in, they pleaded. She was ready to give her life for the Republic, Anakin saw.

He, however, was not.

"All right," Anakin heard himself say. "I surrender. Just don't hurt her."

-----

Twenty minutes later, Anakin found himself sitting on the floor with Chancellor Palpaine, with half a dozen blasters pointed at them. A short while ago Padmé had been taken away for "negotiations". Doubtless Dooku was trying his best to intimidate her into cooperation right now.

"Are you sure you can do nothing?" Palpatine asked him in a low voice.

"No," Anakin replied. "These men are Sith. They can use the Force."

"Oh? But I thought there were always only two Sith. That's what the Jedi legends say, isn't it?"

"They also say the Sith were destroyed a thousand years ago. Obviously they were wrong."

"Hmm. Yes, I suppose that's rather apparent."

Anakin looked Dooku's men over, trying to find a weakness. There were none he could see.

"I have also heard," Palpatine said slowly, "that the Jedi could channel their stronger emotions into power."

The implications of the Chancellor's words sent shivers down Anakin's spine. "Chancellor? Where did you hear that?"

The older man shrugged. "The same place as the legends, I presume. Well? Am I correct? Can you use anger and such as a source of power?"

"Yes, but -" Anakin paused, wondering how to explain this to a non-Jedi. "Chancellor, what you're talking about is forbidden. If a Jedi gives in to hate and anger, he becomes consumed by the dark side of the Force."

"Ah, yes," Palpatine nodded sagely. "But - forgive me for bringing up a painful subject, but I heard what happened to your mother, and your response afterwards."

Anakin's jaws clenched as the memory of his mother's fate in the hands of the Tusken Raiders surfaced. "What about it?" he snapped.

"I simply wish to point out that you gave in to your anger, yet here you are. You haven't turned into the monster they feared you would, have you?"

"No, but that's different."

"I don't understand. Please, enlighten me."

"Back on Tatooine, I didn't use the Force when I -" slaughtered "- killed them. That's why I didn't fall for the dark side."

Palpatine frowned. "That explanation seems . . . simplistic."

"I know. To be honest, I don't understand it, either."

Almost casually, the Chancellor waved his hand at his captors. "Then there they are. They don't appear to be controlled by their negative emotions, do they?"

"Well, no, but -"

"My young Jedi, I cannot believe that the Force could be so cold or unforgiving. Could it be that the danger is exaggerated?"

"No. Well, maybe. I don't know, really."

"And we all fear the unknown. Perfectly understandable."

They sat in silence for a while. Anakin mulled over the Chancellor's words, finding them uncomfortably close to his own doubts. He wished Padmé was here. Everything seemed so much clearer when she explained them.

"The Senator has been gone a long time," Palpatine remarked. "I hope she isn't going to try anything rash."

Anakin gave him a startled glance. "You don't suppose she'd . . ."

"I do not know. However, I have noted that in the past, she has preferred taking things into her own hands rather than waiting them out." He shook his head. "It would be a shame if her impatience got her injured."

As if on cue, a muffled scream came through the walls. And with it, Anakin felt a sharp stab in his chest as he realized he had come periously close to losing her. As he had lost his mother Shmi.

"No," he whispered. "Not again. Never again."

Using the Force in a way he had never done before, Anakin took the ice-cold fear in his belly and thrust it deep into the minds of the Sith. Their eyes popped wide open as they felt it invade what was left of their souls, squeezing their hearts until they stopped beating.

As they died, one of them pulled his trigger in a dying reflex. The blaster bolts struck Anakin, only to be absorbed harmlessly by his newly-found powers.

He heard the Chancellor say his name as Dooku's men collapsed in unmoving heaps on the floor. He heard him ask what was going on, if he was feeling well as Anakin took a lightsaber from one of the bodies.

The blade, when ignited, was the blood-red color of a dying sun.

His focus was such that he did not notice the Chancellor smile as he watched Anakin leave, intent on killing Dooku and ending the threat of the Separatists forever.
