I wish I had time to read more stories. I have a hard time keeping up with my current few as it is. And then of course, I'm having trouble finding time to write my own story... which is troubling, because it's kind of to the climax, with shooting and swords and ACTION! YES! tongue

EDIT: It is the site's policy not to include real world actors in our stories as written in the FAQ department. Therefore I am altering the challenge. (Pray I don't alter it further! tongue )

Creative Challenge: You have somehow been plunged into the make believe world in a galaxy far, far away. How did you get there? What will you do there? Will you stay? You can make it a full blown action, drama, suspense, horror, humor, yes even a mushy love story if you want. Your story cannot exceed 5,000 words. Hopefully that's enough length to come up with a proper adventure. You can choose any one of the three original trilogy movies (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) only. Other than that you can treat the story however you choose.

The story does not have to be the most eloquently written, though it will matter, so please polish up your rough drafts before submitting. It will be the most creative story that will win. I am waiting for Mistress_Renata's reply to allow us to have our own awards thread. If she allows us, then first place will be the GWG Award cup. Second and third place will receive a blue and red ribbon, respectively. The rest will receive 1,000 points for entering. Hopefully Mistress_Renata will be so kind as to see our efforts here and grant us our wish. Otherwise the first place entry will win 1 gazillion points. tongue

Post your story in the Saga forum with "GWG challenge" after your title and send me a private message letting me know that you have made a submission. I will then notify the other judge(s). The deadline for submission is 12:00 midnight Sunday, December 26, 2004 and the winner will be announced December 31, 2004. Please let me know if I've missed something or if there are any concerns.

So far the following have signed up:

Jedi_BMK
CommanderConrad
Arin_Atone
lazykbys

Imperial_Hammer has agreed to be a judge. I would like to ask one more guy who isn't writing a story to help me judge. Any volunteers?

Otherwise, let's see as many guys sign up as possible!

Good luck and let's have some fun with this!

Hi Sarka! happy

Umm...well, the more this club or guild evolves the more I'm inclined to figure a way to accomodate the ladies. I must confess that I did create this to get the guys to come out of the woodwork to present themselves and so far they have, though not in strong a number as I had hoped. I don't want to sound selfish or exclusive either. Would this then cease to be a guild by the men for the men?

I'm not sure how to answer your question. How about a vote? Gentlemen! What say ye? Should the fairer sex be allowed to participate and if so, what capacity?

Maybe submissions for challenges and awards can highligh the writing of just guys... but let the gals participate in voting and nominating process.

That way, we live up to the title of the guild (Gentlemen writing), while giving our lovely and better-smelling companions a fair chance to voice their opinions of our work.

Am I missing something or could the challenge be summed up as “write a story but don’t witter on for too long”?

I like this idea, Arin. Women are more sensitive and perceptive in matters than we are. Any other opinions, ideas guys?

Am I missing something or could the challenge be summed up as “write a story but don’t witter on for too long”?

_JM_ though I've never heard the word witter, I think I understand your question. Basically this challenge is purely for fun. It is a test run for next year while I collect input from the guys on organizing the monthly challenges, the topics, judging, etc. Challenges can and will also be short stories and vignettes and the occasional epic length challenge. We don't want to bog ourselves down writing full length novels each month when we have jobs, schooling, families, etc. I want people to look forward to these challenges, not avoid them.

But no, it is not just write a story, but rather write a creative story. You see, Star Wars was a fresh and extremely creative story that GL produced back in the '70s when there was so much political and economic upheaval, not to mention crappy movies. But all our stories here at tfn, though talented as they are, represent that creativity. So if, for example, everyone had super powers, would anyone be super? I want the participants to reach deep down and come up with some fresh, inventive, and imaginative plots. I could give you an example of how I'd treat this challenge, but then it would diminish the challenge. I hope I answered your concern.

Maybe I'm on the wrong track. Opinions?

EDIT: I just received a pm regarding policy of using real actors/people in our stories. In the FAQ it states:

Actor Fics

“Actorfics," are fan fictions which feature real world people. It has been decided by administration that this should no longer be permitted, as it can be seen as an invasion of privacy by the people involved. Actorfics in progress before December 14, 2002, will be allowed to wrap up, but new ones may not be started on or after that date.

Therefore this challenge will be changed. My apologies. See? We're still working out the bugs. I also need to contact Mistress_Renata to make sure we can have our own awards thread.

I want to thank the individual who pointed out the above policy! I need to review the FAQ! I will edit the above challenge to make it suitable for submission.

I'm sorry, Anakins-Angel-Padme, and everyone. I have edited the challenge. I wanted George Lucas to be the one who was plunged into the story amid the stresses of completing his first films. It would have been in fun, with no disprespect intended, but again, it is against the site's policy to do so and so we will respect that.

The challenge has been modified and is not as creative, but it will give the guys a chance to still be imaginative and write how they would fit themselves in the fantasy.

Good luck gents!

Everybody must be out Christmas shopping.

I also want to start a round robin story. I have been formulating a premise revolving around RC-4246, a clone commando whose squad is assigned on a mission intended to fail. (If you'll notice my avatar, that is a headshot of a commando.)

If you guys like special ops stories, and like playing games like HALO, Tom Clancy's Rainbox Six, etc. then brace yourselves for February 2005 when Star Wars: Republic Commando is released on Xbox. Hopefully on PS2 also.

A little background: Though RC's are clones of the nefarious Bounty Hunter, Jango Fett, they do not train with regular clone troopers. They don't fight like regular troopers. Their upgraded armor and weaponry is advanced, lighter, more durable. They are specifically trained for siege assault, counterinsurgency, hostage extraction, demolitions, assassinations surveillance, and more.

Right now there's a paperback novel on sale for about 5 bucks which kind of goes along with the soon to be released game. So if you enjoy this kind of story writing/reading, then go buy the book, read it, research and find out what you can about RC's and let's figure out an outline. This should be some testosterone pumping, adrenaline boosting entertainment!

Sign up if you're interested in particpating in the round robin and please take part in the above challenge. Maybe it's not much of a challenge, but we're in the beta stages of the guild and I'd really like this to succeed.

Please post who is interested in participating. Thanks!

Kind of like Hard Contact, right? That book was excellent and I suggest everyone get themsleves a copy.

I might be interested in this type of story, though.

Exactly like Hard Contact by Karen Traviss. (A girl!!) I'm still in the first chapters so I don't know what happens next!

But I'm taking inspiration from the book and the upcoming game! I saw the preview of the game at the San Diego Comic Con a few months back. It rocks!!! I got to meet a lot of Star Wars stars, dress up in my Stormtrooper costume, etc. Yup, I'm one of those geeks and I'll be sporting my Jango Fett costume at the Celebration 3 event next summer. If anyone's interested in seeing what I do check this out. We do a lot of community service, including visiting kids in hospitals, charity walks, raise money for toys for tots, and more.

Anyway, back on topic! I haven't seen this premise done on the Fanfic boards yet, so you all saw it here first! Sidious, I'd love it if you would participate.

Sorry, I’m not interested in the challenge as the only ideas I have for what would happen if I was “zapped” into the GFFA are depressing ones. Some people are willing to emigrate to a new life where customs are strange, signposts and information are in a foreign language, and they have no more contact with those they left behind but that’s not the sort of situation I’d do well in.

Also, I’m afraid, not interested in the Round Robin Republic Commando idea. It’s not the setting (which as you say has plenty of exciting possibilities) it is just that I have had enough experience of collaborative work going wrong to prefer to succeed or fail on my own efforts alone. There is also the problem that recently I have been irregular in my work so working to deadlines (as would be necessary to coordinate the authors efforts) would be difficult.

Best of luck with both though to those who want to attempt them.
