Forgot to post about the first round of the Beanpot today...

Nathan Gerbe scored the game-winning goal at the 7:15 mark of overtime to give BC a 4-3 win over BU in the second game of the Beanpot collge hockey tournament at the Garden last night. BU had not lost in the first round of the Beanpot since 1994, and had not lost to archrival BC in a first-round game since 1981. BC will face Harvard, who beat Northeastern 3-1 in yesterday's first game, in the title game next Monday night. BU will play Northeastern in the consolation game.

Boston.com and the Herald are both reporting that Curt Schilling will not be ready for spring training due to a shoulder injury. The Herald is reporting that the injury is significant and could require surgery. If that is the case, he could be lost for the entire season.

What can these Celtics not do w/o Kevin Garnett, other than lose? The defending champion San Antonio Spurs were in town for a nationally-televised (on ABC) game, and the C's came away with an 8-point victory. And keep this in mind...they were also missing starting center Kendrick Perkins with a shoulder strain. I've heard a report, however, that "The Ticket" could return to action Wednesday night against the Knicks, so we'll see.

It was announced after the Celtics' game yesterday that Kevin Garnett will not be playing in the All-Star Game due to his injury. Garnett's roster spot on the Eastern Conference squad has been taken by Detroit Pistons center Rasheed Wallace.

In Red Sox news, 1B Kevin Youkilis has agreed to a 1 year deal with the club worth $3M, avoiding arbitration.

Freshman D Nick Petrecki scored 2 goals, including the game-winner 7:07 into overtime, to lift Boston College to a 6-5 win over Harvard in the Beanpot title game. This is BC's 14th Beanpot title, and 3rd this decade. BU defeated Northeastern 5-4 in the consolation game.

In Red Sox-related news, it was announced that WEEI's Dale Arnold will be the second broadcaster for select games on the Red Sox Radio Network this season, filling the role handled by Glen Geffner last season.

In a minor move yesterday, the Patriots signed free agent LB T.J. Slaughter to an undisclosed contract. Slaughter, who did not play in 2007, has experience playing ILB in a 3-4 defense, but figures to be vying for a backup spot and should not affect the potential returns of Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau.

The Celtics, thanks to last night's win at TD Banknorth Garden against the Knicks, have hit the All-Star break guaranteed of at least a .500 season. Their run of getting big men hurt continued, though, with injuries to Brian Scalabrine (groin) and "Big Baby" Glen Davis (strained left quad). The Celtics may get Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins back for the western road swing that starts Tuesday night in Denver, however.

In All-Star news, Paul Pierce will have some Celtics company on the Eastern Conference squad, after all, as it was announced that Ray Allen will replace injured Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler. Also, starting point guard Rajon Rondo will be part of the sophomore team in tomorrow night's T-Mobile Rookie Challenge.

The deadline to assign franchise and transition players passed without the Patriots assigning a tag to anyone. As it was widely speculated that they might franchise Randy Moss, this could mean that the two sides have reached a verbal agreement on a long-term contract. However, if that's the case, we won't hear about it until next week, when the new NFL year begins, as Moss restructured his contract after last April's trade, and league rules state you can only extend or restructure a contract once per year.

Been lax posting (busy w/ bowling stuff), but the Celtics hit the skids a bit out west, the Patriots released Rosevelt Colvin and had Kevin Faulk busted on marijuana charges (though he was not actually arrested), and, yes, the Bruins are still in the thick of the playoff race, though they made no moves at the trading deadline.

Oh yeah, spring training opened in Ft. Myers, and they're close to playing games. grin

Well, the Sox majorly kicked some but yesterday in a game against BC.

Beckett started things off, going for 2 innings.

The game only went for 7 innings - perhaps because of a mercy rule....

The final score was 24-0!

Can't wait for the 1st official pre-season game tonight at 7 against the Twins! Dice-K will be on the mound. Will be nice to see how much he's grown in the off season.

I'll definitely watch a couple of innings tonight. I was a bit bummed out last night when I checked the on-screen guide and it had the Red Sox being on NESN. When I turned over it was only a Bruins game. sad

K, the games against college teams (they also played Northeastern last night) only go 7 innings no matter what the score is.
