Red Sox Update courtesy of Bostonherald.com
Crisp, Kielty headed for Japan
By Michael Silverman and Rob Bradford
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - Updated 20m ago
Coco Crisp and Bobby Kielty both will be making the trip to Japan.
After participating in their second straight day of games at the Red Sox [team stats] minor league facility the two outfielders were told that they will be playing in the first two exhibition games in Tokyo. The decision to add them to the 28-man active roster for the season opener has yet to be made.
Crisp is battling back from a groin injury and Kielty has been trying to bounce back from a calf problem for the last week.
The switch hitters each took bats from the left and right sides today in minor league games.
Crisp went 1-for-4 with a walk, including a home run from the left side. Kielty went 1-for-5 with a single from the right side.
Crisp expects to play in both exhibition games in Japan before the season opener against the A’s on March 25. Asked if he’s close to 100 percent, Crisp said, “ I don’t know, but I didn’t feel it at all today. I feel good enough to where I feel good enough to play nine innings. It’s just a matter of me getting out there and testing it out.”
Crisp, whose favorite baseball movie is “Mr. Baseball”, starring Tom Selleck and centered around an American player in Japan, is looking forward to the trip. “I just love that movie,” said Crisp. “I always wanted to go out there and experience it. So I’m happy.”
Kielty said his calf feels significantly better. “It’s very, very relieving,” he said. “It’s been an issue for the last week. It stressed me out, for sure. I was pretty fired up to run (today) the way I did.”
Julio Lugo [stats], who has been experiencing a sore back, also played in a minor league game and went 1-fpr-4 with a walk and a stolen base. He had a broken bat infield single.

With regard to Troy Brown...
"Troy Brown, the Patriots' all-time leading receiver, is considering catching on with the team's most despised rival, the Jets. Brown visited with the Jets yesterday and worked out for them, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. It was initially thought the 36-year-old Brown, who has not stated whether he plans to return or retire, would not entertain teams that would play the Patriots this season. However, visiting the Jets signaled that he plans to explore all his options before making a decision. Brown also might not have a choice, as the Browns and Lions, teams initially thought to be interested in Brown, have cooled their pursuit, according to the source."
Apparently, Caldwell is being pursued by the Redskins...

This is huge news...
Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics stopped the Rockets' remarkable run in emphatic fashion Tuesday night, pulling away in the second half for a 94-74 victory.
The Rockets had something like a 22 game winning streak going!
Hooray for the C's!

And now we get news that the Sox' players may boycott the Japan trip because the coaches aren't getting paid, which the players were at least led to believe were getting paid. Stay tuned!

As an update to my last post, the Red Sox have refused to take the field for today's game against the Blue Jays over the issue.

I was just thinking... imagine made to go to Japan to do your job and there is a handful of people that are not going to get paid to do their job. The way the MLB handled this at first was really unprofessional. Hopefully it doesnt happen again!

That is going to be a long flight to Japan
Well it looks like MLB almost caused an international incident with there nickle and dime mentality.
Looks like the Red Sox players stood up to MLB and won the fight.

I am glad they did. I dont think it would have been fair that the coaching staff would not have gotten paid for the trip. they work just as hard to make a winning team. Kudos to the Sox today!!

The Celtics very nearly pulled off the most successful road trip in NBA history (no team has ever won 4 straight on the road against teams that were 20 games over .500), but they let a 15 point lead slip away and lost by 7 to the New Orleans Hornets last night. They did sweep the "Texas Triangle" of the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks for the first time since the 1986 championship season, so going 4-1 on the 5-game trip should be considered a resounding success. The C's will have an opportunity for revenge this Friday night when the Hornets pay their annual visit to the Garden.

With a 112-92 win over the New Orleans Hornets at the Garden last night, the Celtics have now beaten every other team in the NBA at least once this season. The win was also their 20th of the season of at least 20 points...keep in mind, they only had 24 wins by any margin all of last season. What a difference a year makes!

As a college hockey note, the Boston College Eagles made the "Frozen Four" for the third straight year...let's hope they can bring the national title back to Boston this time.

On a local college basketball note, the UMass Minutemen advanced to the title game of the NIT last night with a 78-66 win over Florida at Madison Square Garden. Senior swingman Gary Forbes led all scorers w/ 19 points for the Minutemen, who will play Ohio St. tomorrow night.
