Let's hope the C's can close out the Cavs tomorrow night in Cleveland...'nuff said! grin

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Manny-catches-warning-track-drive-then-high-fiv?urn=mlb,82520

For those who may have missed seeing Manny's highlight-reel catch yesterday in Baltimore...he makes a running catch on the warning track, climbs the wall, and, in true Manny Ramirez-style, high-fives a Sox fan that was sitting in the front row of the bleachers...and he still doubled off the runner going back to first base! laugh Just wish the Sox won the game. plain

Well, it took 14 playoff games, but the Celtics are where everyone thought they would be at this time in the beginning of the season: playing the Detroit Pistons for the Eastern Conference title. A lot of veteran Celtics observers (including this one) thought yesterday's Game 7 with the Cavaliers reminded them of the Game 7 between Dominique Wilkins' Hawks and Larry Bird's Celtics, as, while LeBron James put on a show, Paul Pierce was equal to the task. It took an unlikely hero in the end, however...mid-season acquisition P.J. Brown, who hit a couple of clutch shots near the end of the game to keep the Celtics in the lead until it became a free-throw shooting contest. There was also the hustle play by "The Truth" on the jump ball late in the game, diving to grab the loose ball and getting the time-out called before the Cavs could force another jump ball.

Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals is tomorrow night at the Garden.

How about Jon Lester last night, huh?

Heck of a catch by Jacoby Ellsbury as well!

What a year for Boston sports, huh?

Go CELTS!

As an aside about last night, it should be noted that Jason Varitek has now caught a record 4 no-hitters, having done so previously for Hideo Nomo, Derek Lowe, and Clay Buchholz.

The Celtics, who have not won a road game yet in the playoffs, will have to find a way to win on the road if they wish to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals, as they lost Game 2 to the Pistons the other night at the Garden. Credit the Celtics for clawing their way back from an 11 point deficit late in the game, however, with Ray Allen finally getting out of his shooting funk. The C's get their first opportunity at a win at the Palace in Auburn Hills tonight.

Yay! applause Finally, a road playoff win for the Celtics last night, and a pretty convincing one at that, except for near the end when the Pistons started trapping and creating turnovers. Still, the C's get home court advantage back, and need only 2 more wins to reach the NBA Finals.

What's old is new again...after winning very memorable Games 5 and 6, the Boston Celtics are the 2008 Eastern Conference champions and will face their most storied rival, the Los Angeles Lakers, in the NBA Finals. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is set for the Garden on Thursday night.

Manny Ramirez became the third player (along with Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams) to hit the 500 home run milestone in a Red Sox uniform last night, taking a Chad Bradford fastball over the right center field fence @ Camden Yards. The nicer part about it is that the fan who caught the ball gave it to Ramirez for only a photo opportunity with him (and possibly some swag). Manny plans to auction the ball off for a children's charity.

This last road trip for the Red Sox was costly, not just in losses (Sox went 4-6 on the road trip), but also on personnel, as both Daisuke Matsuzaka (off to an 8-0 start) and "Big Papi" David Ortiz were lost to the DL, the latter being just put on it w/ a partially-torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Papi's injury couldn't have come at a worse time, as the Sox open up a homestand tonight with a 3-game series against (hold your breath) the first place Tampa Bay Rays (no longer the Devil Rays) which is looking critical for this point in the season.

The Red Sox used their first draft pick, #30 overall, to select high school SS/RHP Casey Kelly out of Sarasota, FL. The scouting report says he has the skills to become either a Nomar Garciaparra-type shortstop or a starting pitcher, but there is some risk to this pick: Kelly is committed to the University of Tennessee as a quarterback, so he would have to make a decision on either playing baseball full-time or being a two-sport star in college.

On a sad note, Kevin Youkilis's errorless games streak @ 1B ended @ 233 today when he dropped a 5 ft. lob from 2B Alex Cora in the top of the 9th inning. It should've been a very easy play, but the streak was fun while it lasted. The Red Sox still defeated the Mariners 11-3.
