A group of us 501st members flew out to L.A. this past weekend to take a trip to Reelclothes for more Starship Troopers stuff and to sight-see. We made a point to go to the L.A. Convention Center to check out the area . All I can say is...
My God. Bring bullet-proof vests, ammunition and a bible. The entire area for at least ten miles around the LACC has got to be the most horrible, crime-ridden cess-pool of disease and filth I've ever seen. And I've seen pretty bad. In the area near the CC we saw burned out buildings, homeless people, slums that would make you cry, burned cars, abandoned cars and buildings and one pretty blue VW Beetle drove by with FIVE bullet holes in the drivers side door. The land between the LACC and the hotels looked like downtown Baghdad.
Be aware: The gangs are not stupid. They know the nerds are coming and they're bringing money. I wouldn't take myself or anyone in my family within 100 miles of that place.

Well I could live in fear or I could enjoy life. So, given the choice, I'll take the latter. If I get shot, so be it, but I probably have just as good a chance of getting a cap popped in my butt here in Memphis as I do in L.A., so I'm not going to be too concerned about it.
Gunfire, gang fights, police sirens.... Ah, the sounds of my childhood.

As one who grew up running the streets of South Memphis, this place ain't got squat on LA. We drove by the LACC and I was scared. The car with the bullet holes was just the first thing we saw, then the burned out overpasses and abandoned cars littering the streets. It was....frightening.  All I can say is, you guys be careful. Travel in packs and don't stop to talk to anyone on the way back to your hotel room.
I really do hope y'all have a big fun time and make it back to Memphis in one piece.

I have family in LA and used to live there. Downtown LA isn't as bad as South Central or Compton. And those are burbs.
I'm fairly sure we'll be okay. I don't plan on leaving the convention center proper and the convention center wouldn't be there if they didn't have conventions all the time. It's really not good for tourism for it to be in the middle of gangland central
