we've decided to DEFINITELY stop for the night on our way from AL to OK next week & i was wondering if any of you lovely people had suggestions on places/areas to stay/sleep/lodge and/or eat? 
thank you in advance for your southern hospitality. we promise to leave Memphis the way we find it...just with a few more poopy diapers than before

Are you going down I-40? If so, you could stay on the I-40/Germantown (South) exit going towards downtown. There's some hotels there right off the interstate (there's a Costco there, and it's the exit for the Wolfchase mall). There's a bunch of resteraunts, a Wal-Mart, the mall, a Target, etc. It's also a good middle place between Traci and I.
Let me know if you guys want to hook up, even for an hour or so!

yes, we'll be following I-40 all the way into OKC. i'll keep a lookout for that exit & see if i can't do some research and find us a hotel. sounds like just the type of place we want to camp out for the night!

i'm looking at that map (thanks, Rhonda!) and i'll be coming up I-55, then heading west on I-40. i'm willing to head east if you guys think it's the better spot to stay, but do you know anything about west of memphis...or perhaps the downtown area?

There's the Westin and the Hampton Inn downtown. I'd recommend the Hampton Inn. It's in Peabody Place.
If you're coming up 55, to 40, there's some places in Southhaven that might be okay. Some hotels off of 55 are iffy and I wouldn't stay anywhere between 55 and downtown, they could be bad. But going out east to Wolfchase isn't too bad a drive. About 20 minutes out of your way. A lot more conventient when it comes to stuff like Wal-Mart, resteraunts and more hotels.

Where are you crossing into MS? There is not alot of civilization along I-55 once you get south of Southaven. I currently live in the wilds of MS, so I speak from personal experience.
In Southaven, there is a hotel right off of I-55 on Goodman Road that I would recommend, but I can't think of the name of it now. I'll pay more attention on my home tonight.  Goodman Road is the heart of Southaven, so you would have your pick of restaurants, shopping, gas, etc, and it's a nice area.
You might also want to consider staying in Tunica if you are coming up I-55 instead of downtown Memphis. You can take I-69 from I-55 directly to Tunica, and there are several hotels like Hampton Inn that are available. You wouldn't have to stay at one of the casinos.

I'd say the Hampton Inn downtown is your best bet, but getting off the interstate and getting there would be the hardest part. But if you remember to get off at Riverside (I think?) or down by the Pyramid, we can get you there. It's off of Peabody place and Beale which is right off of Riverside. Downtown is a must see if you've never been here!

From I-55 - Take I-55 North to Riverside Dr. Make a right onto Beale St. then a left onto Front St. Take a right onto Peabody Place and the hotel is on the right.

we are coming up US HWY 72 that drives across northern AL, slips through the top corner of MS, & meets up with I-55 (maybe after another road, i don't currently remember ) into Memphis, then I-40 straight into OKC It's at least a 12 hour drive & we'll have a 6 year old & 3 month old in tow. ...Thus the stop overnight & splitting the driving up into 2 days. 
I'll check out the downtown hotel, but the Wolfchase idea is sounding more and more alluring. thanks for the help so far, guys!

Oh! You'll be coming through Collierville and Germantown basically, then. Or you could. If you don't get off at 55, you'll take Highway 72 until you get to Poplar Avenue. Whatever way you feel more comfortable with, I'd drive. But Wolfchase is a bit north of where you're going. It won't take long, because you'll be taking 240 to 40.
When you get into Tennessee, you'll be really close to where I live. I live in the Germantown/Cordova area. Hwy 72 ends at Poplar in Collierville TN, then you'll take left and drive through the rest of Collierville until you get to Germantown. Right past the Chili's is Germantown Rd., you take a right there and there's a couple of hotels (see below) there about a quarter mile down the road and you'll be close to the interstate (and me!) and you can get on 240 and go south at Walnut Grove and head back towards downtown over the bridge and on to Arkansas.

i checked my email & the map you sent, that's really cool. I wonder why mapquest had us driving up on 55 when 72 runs right up there? i guess it's shorter that way or something.
anyway, thanks! looks like the marriot might be the only one with rooms still available. late planning, FTW! we'll be coming in NEXT Friday, December 28th & driving out the next morning. Sounds like a plan, Jody! There's all kinds of places up and down Germantown Rd. to eat, and I'll show you how to hit I-40 to head west the next day. Just give me a call when it looks like you're close (or you need to say, WTH am I?) and we'll hook up. We can decide on a resteraunt before hand though and get a number of folks that are coming.
