SciFi's Dune and Children of Dune Miniseries
I know that this isn't Star Wars, but you have to admit that these are the best scifi movies ever done by a TV station. They actually followed the books and the detail and scope of the films are just beautiful to the eye.
If anyone has seen these two miniseries you know that they are spectacular and make a great time killer until the next Star Wars movie.
They have everything, suspense, war, royalty, epic battle scenes, great special effects, and best of all they open our minds to another great SciFi fantasy to explore. As you all know, great SciFi is dwendling from the movies and TV.
Dune by the SciFi Originals is out to buy or rent on DVD and VHS, Children of Dune just finished its first airing last night and you can catch it again in full on Sunday, right after Dune. Yea that's right 12 hours of straight SciFi entertainment.

Man you are kidding!!!!
I swear I WAS JUST about to make a post about this event!
LOL!
This DUNE event was 20 times better than the first DUNE. My favorite part is in night one:Dune Messiah at the end where the twins are born and the theme music is playing with Edric, Korba, and Helen getting their executions done.
Remarkable filming!
Alia is great.....yum!

RE: SciFi's Dune and Children of Dune Miniseries
Thanks for agreeing. I havn't read the books (I'm not big on reading) but the movies are just the best.
I do believe that was also my favorite part. And also the end when Leto puts the knife down in front of alia and says "Help yourself!" That was a very strong part
Did you notice the symbolism, the butterfly expressing change and Leto steping in his fathers footprints on the dune, "following in his fathers footsteps."
I have read Synopses of the later books, but It depressed me to learn that nothing ever gets better for these people. Dune eventually is destroyed and everyone turns against the human race. Can't this have a nice pretty ending like Star Wars. Of course, Fank Herbert died before finishing all nine books he planned, he only got to 6, so maybe there is still hope.

Hah I got the 1,000th post in our forum!!!
I am on book 5 right now. I have been reading them all back to back since I got them and CoD was my fav. so far.
Frank's son is writing along with Kevin J. Anderson on the 7th book.
You should really read the books if you think the show was great. This way you can get into their heads and just see the greatness that is Frank Herbert!

RE: SciFi's Dune and Children of Dune Miniseries
No one else seems to have the excitement about this that we have. I guess that makes us the DUNE geeks. Oh Well.
I'm looking into the books now. I need to start reading more anyway, why not start with something I'll like, RIGHT!
Can you give me the correct order to read them in, there seems to be some debate on the net about the order and I don't want to screw up. It may take me forever because I'm a slow reader, but I'll get to them all.
I think the COD dvd comes out next month on the 20th. I already have DUNE and The DUNE director's cut. Maybe when the COD DVD comes out some of us can get together and watch them as a get together.... Although I don't see much excitement with the post...
OH and CONGRATS on the little one. I'm not a father but I realize that it is a big step. I wish all the luck and happiness. Here's a thought BOY: LETO or LUKE
GIRL: Channi or Leia! Just a thought...

RE: SciFi's Dune and Children of Dune Miniseries
Hey everybody. Haven't posted in a while, but I agree that Dune is great SciFi. I've read the first two books (Dune and Dune Messiah) and they are VERY good. I recommend the read to anyone who hasn't. Hebert does seem to have a thing for downers though. But like you said, maybe by the end things will look up.
One thing to add, a couple of the books by the son and Anderson have already come out. Dune: House Atreides, Dune: The Butlerian Jihad, Dune: House Corrino, and Dune: House Harkonnen are all out. That makes all of them, right? Anyone read all of them (translation: these books)?
And where did you get that only 9 books where planned? The current total is 10. Just curious. Later.

RE: SciFi's Dune and Children of Dune Miniseries
I meant that Frank himself intended the DUNE Saga to consist of Nine books, he passed away before he could finish them. The books his son and Anderson are creating are based on notes and background information created by his father to explain the relationships and happenings that led to the DUNE Series of books. They are all Prequels you might say, not continuations. After Chapterhouse DUNE, Frank had planned 3 more but never had to chance to finish his works.
I got this info from an interview with his son that I read while I was in college. His son said that alot of die hard fans kept asking for background information on the great houses and what happened in the past that led to the stories in the DUNE saga, so he started reading all of his father's notes and writings and decided to employ a novelist-Anderson- to help with the creation of the prequels. There will be 6 prequel books all together with one coming next year this time and the last to follow in 2005 around this time as well, then he said that he has enough notes to start to finish the DUNE saga itself, which we can start to look for the 1st book sometime in 2006. He hasn't titled it but says it starts the road to an ending that fans and followers didn't get due to his fathers death.

RE: SciFi's Dune and Children of Dune Miniseries
good info. I can't wait until those come out. I started rereading the old books (got thru the first two originally) and I ran into a problem. I can't find the 3rd book (Children of Dune) in town (lafayette). I haven't tried the stores in the mall yet (I really loathe the mall), but everywhere else doesn't have that one. I'll keep looking for it until I finish rereading the first two. Then I'll break down and try the mall.
The things a person will due to get good scifi.

Good to know. Thanks for the info.
You know what though? I kinda feel like an idolator. Coming to a shrine of my Star Wars Geekdom and talking about SciFi which was NOT created be the Great Flanned One. Anyone else get that same feeling or have I just lost it? ?:|

I don't feel bad about talking about scifi that wasn't created by Georgy boy...if you read a little into it, Star Wars and DUNE have alot in common.
As for finding the books, Waldenbooks in the mall has them all in paperback and if you don't like going to the mall simply enter through Foley's and walk out into the main hall and its right there then just leave. You only have to see 2 stores that way. I was there 3 days ago buying book 1 and 2. These will be some of the first books I read (not a big one for books) but I'm halfway through DUNE Book 1 and I can put up with these because they are interesting.

I was just teasing about the idolator comment (and I know that I can't spell to save my life). Thanks for the tip on Waldenbooks having them all...I really do hate the mall...
I have all that where written by Frank Hebert except Children of Dune. I have also surprised myself by not reading the later books before CoD.
If only the Dune universe was as expanded as Star Wars...then we would have lots more to talk about!!

you must get CoD before you read any of those later books or it will just ruin the whole thing.
Good job on being able to hold off on it though. Hurry up and get the BOOK!!!!!
