Shutting Off the Sun

At the end of the Clone Wars, the Jedi Order, the driving force behind the Republic's army, had experienced their share of losses. The war had taken its toll on everyone, and the remaining troops, both Jedi and soldier, were welcomed home as heroes. However, the tide quickly shifted, and the Jedi soon found themselves being hunted by the same people they had fought so hard to protect.

This story will cover everything from the Jedi Purge to the dawn of the Rebellion. I post as inspiration strikes, which, hopefully, will be very often. I would appreciate any feedback you could offer.

Big thanks to my beta-reader, Rogue49. I couldn't have done it without her. Ash, any time you have a hungering for dill pickles, my refridgerator is always open to you! silly

Disclaimer: This is the part where I'm supposed to say that nothing belongs to me, and that we all owe George a big thankyou for letting us play in his playground. I would like to say that its all mine... unfortunately, its not true.

Coruscant’s sun seemed to shine brighter that day. Light ricocheted off of shiny duracreet and seemed to frolic at the General’s feet, playful and teasing. The Force absolutely glowed with life in a jubilant dance of its own, as the people of the Republic basked in the victory and bliss of the moment. Music floated on the air, an energetic jig that added to the dizzy happiness that saturated everyone’s senses. A few had even given in to the merry rhythm and were dancing in unadulterated exhilaration. Children ran through the crowd, waving rainbow streamers as they trailing the path of the dancing light, giggling endlessly in the spirit of the chase.

In the distance, the General could make out the proud spires of the Jedi Temple as they too caught the sun’s rays. Unlike the buildings around it, however, the Temple didn’t reflect the beams, but rather seemed to harvest the light, storing it up inside. The age-old structure seemed to emanate the radiance, becoming an object of luminescence almost as brilliant as the sun itself.

How wonderful it felt to be home.

Home, away from the battlefields, from the blood and the gore. Away from the mangled remains of loyal Republic citizens. Away from the injured, the dying, and the countless dead.

The General had seen enough of war to last him a lifetime. And now, finally, it was over.

The surrender of the Separatists had not ended the killing right away. There had always seemed to be another faction to deal with, another rebellious military division, another traitor to the Republic. The Chancellor had not been easily satisfied with the defeat of the Separatist army, but had continued to root out disloyal politicians and order their imprisonment. Then, of course, there were the endless seas of casualties, those who were sick or wounded that needed tending to. And the mounds of dead that needed to be identified and sent home, back to the families that would need to grieve.

Only then could the Republic rejoice at its ‘victory’, if it could be called that after so many lives had been destroyed. The General was still wondering.

He stood on a raised platform with many Jedi and other heroes that had been involved in the war effort, waiting expectantly for the Chancellor’s entrance. It had been rumored that he was preparing a speech of grandiose proportions, one that would give concrete plans for reconstruction and lead the Republic into a new era of peace. While it was true that Palpatine had proven himself an effective leader, a trigger of doubt still remained in the General’s mind. He couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that the Chancellor was not all he claimed to be. It cast a pall on his mood, and made him unable to fully enjoy the celebration. He, unlike most of the galaxy, was not looking forward to hearing the Chancellor’s speech.

But then, he confessed to himself, he had never been fond of any politicians, and listening to ostentatious speeches of campaign and promotion had never interested him.

However, he could not shake the ominous sensation, and added to it was the fact that a certain prominent hero of the Republic seemed to be missing from those gathered around him. Anakin Skywalker. Anakin Skywalker, who was privy to the Chancellor’s thoughts and ambitions, who had harbored a grudge against the Jedi ever since his marriage had been discovered and had led to his removal from the Order. It seemed almost impossible that he would miss this day of commemoration and recognition. But his place on the platform was vacant, and there was no sign of him in the crowd.

The General exchanged glances with the Jedi Master Yoda, who gave him am almost imperceptible nod. The wizened little Master had also noticed Skywalker’s absence. But before the General could ask about its meaning, a roar went up from the crowd, and Palpatine stepped up to the podium. Small children were raised onto their parents shoulders so that they could see, and everyone hushed those around them as the Chancellor opened his mouth to speak.

“People of the Republic,” he began, with a smile, “The Clone Wars have ended! Victory is ours!”

A raucous cheer went up from the people. Fists were thrown into the air in celebration, the children waved their rainbow streamers high, and even the battle-weary soldiers found themselves grinning ear to ear. The Force was an overflowing spring of relieved excitement and anticipation.

Palpatine motioned for silence, and the crowd quieted. “On this great day of celebration, a day of rejoicing shared among all peoples, we also must remember those who gave their life in the mighty battle for galactic peace. We must not let their sacrifice be for naught.”

‘Here comes the campaign speech’, the General thought wryly to himself. It never ceased to amaze him how politicians could turn a tragedy like war into a way to bring about their own personal agendas. It was almost offending, that sentient deaths became just a means to a political end.

“The rise of the Separatists proved that there is a need for change in our government. I now ask that you, the proud citizens of the Republic, honor the noble deaths of our soldiers by supporting a quest for change. A quest for improvement. A quest that will ensure that such a war will never occur again. I give you my solemn pledge as your appointed Chancellor, that I will do everything within the powers you give me to do exactly that. To make sure that your husbands, your children, your friends and neighbors, will never again have to sacrifice their life to the cause of democracy.”

The roar of the crowd nearly made it impossible to hear the last part of his sentence. He merely shook his head, marveling at how right he had been. The Chancellor had managed to turn a catastrophe into a rally point for his own political ambitions. A moment later, an even louder rumble drowned out his thoughts as a sleek Republic starfighter flew right over the top of the crowd. Its bubbled canopy enabled the General to get a good look at the pilot, and he nodded quietly to himself. At least now he knew where Anakin had disappeared to. The newly designed starship, the “TIE fighter”, as people were beginning to call it, flew neatly around the crowd, tilted at an angle as if to pay tribute to something. The General speculated briefly if Anakin meant to show respect for the dead, or for the Chancellor.

Suddenly, the sky around the TIE shifted, becoming an ugly, stormy gray. The General wondered at the sudden change, but somewhere in his subconscious he recognized this scene as a different time, a different day. The fighter was joined by others, and together the squadron screamed towards the still radiant Jedi Temple. As the first volley of shots was fired the Force shrieked in protest, and the General knew fear. He wanted to run, he wanted to close his eyes, to shut out the image of the dying building, but all he found himself capable of was watching in horrified anguish. It was worse than dying a hundred deaths; it was feeling a hundred deaths, without dying any of them. Despair clung to his soul; he could do nothing for those inside. He could only thank the Force that they had gotten the children out in time, that not all of the Jedi had been at the Temple, that SOME would still live on. He saw it all, saw the whole Temple crash down, saw Anakin’s starfighter pierce the structure with its bolts of fire and decimate the only building he had ever called home.

Fire. Everywhere. He chased Anakin, wanting to catch him, wanting to shake the darkness out of him. Lightsabers tangled, clashed, and attacked. Lava bubbled underneath their feet as they fought their way through the pit of the volcano. The General could feel the heat emanating from the pits below him. He could feel the fire inside of him, wanting to unleash its blistering fury. His anger sparked, he touched that fire. He saw Anakin stumble in his own fury, and leapt at him, pressing his advantage. Off balance, Anakin sprung back to avoid the General’s blade, and his foot caught. The General saw him fall over the side as if in slow motion. He reached for Anakin’s hand, the fire inside of him gone and replaced with cold dread. It wasn’t supposed to end this way. He couldn’t let Anakin fall. There was still hope that Anakin would change, would come back to the Jedi. Would come back to him. So he reached.

And felt their fingertips brush together briefly before Anakin toppled into the lava, and the fire engulfed him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan Kenobi shot out of bed, gasping for breath. His clothing clung to his body, drenched with sweat, and his heart pounded unmercifully against his chest. He took several deep, calming breaths, staring at the windowsill where a flame was still burning its way down a candle.
Two weeks. Two weeks since the Jedi Temple had fallen, destroyed as an example of the Chancellor’s… no, Emperor’s power. Two weeks since he had decreed all Jedi to be enemies of the state and punishable for treason.
Eleven standard days since his fight with Anakin. And every night since had been plagued by the same nightmare.
He walked to his window, and surveyed the jungle moon before him. Yavin 4 was only a temporary respite, a stepping stone to a safer place. Where exactly that safer place was, he wasn’t sure. With the Temple gone, he was no longer sure that such a safe haven existed. It used to be that the home of the Jedi was the safest place in the galaxy.
He had heard people call the fall of the Temple a tragedy. A real waste. An unnecessary precaution on Palpatine’s part. Some had even gone as far to say that it was the worst thing Palpatine had ever done during his term. But no one really seemed to understand, with the exception of other Jedi and a few close friends.
To Obi-Wan, the destruction of the Temple had been like shutting off the Sun. Life hadn’t seemed capable of functioning without its guiding light, but now that beacon, that lighthouse, was gone, and would never be able to steer him to safety again.
For once in his life, he had no idea where he was going, and no idea what to do.
This deserves another hearty "Impressive, most impressive!" grin I can't wait to see you portray Anakin's transition. Its one of those things that could just take many different angles depending on the person holding the camera. The start is great. I love how you really don't mention the "General's" name but, you gradually give hints. mischief Adds suspense!!!
Two weeks. Two weeks since the Jedi Temple had fallen, destroyed as an example of the Chancellor’s… no, Emperor’s power. Two weeks since he had decreed all Jedi to be enemies of the state and punishable for treason.
It would have been interesting to see the reaction of all the Jedi standing on the platform. Would they have resisted...retaliated? What would they have done to the Chancellor standing right next to them? What would he have done to them? OOO- [face_shocked]- Yoda and Palpatine. Outrageous combo!! I like the dream approach though. It sheds attention away from what happened in "city square" to Anakin.
Suddenly, the sky around the TIE shifted, becoming an ugly, stormy gray. The General wondered at the sudden change, but somewhere in his subconscious he recognized this scene as a different time, a different day.
I feel so dense. I get it now. The speech and attack on the temple didn't happen at the same time. silly
Cool post! I will have to go around and set up a plug for it!!! Write it and they will come. laugh Can't wait to see the darker side of Anakin. Are you going to go into the power of Palpatine? devil Too much fun!!
DarthSon- Thanks for reading! Glad you enjoyed it grin I'm kind of writing this as inspiration strikes, but I'm going to try and post once a week. I do have the next one written, but I also like to always be a little ahead of myself.
BrassyDarth- Also, thanks for reading. Just so you know, originally I did intend to write the dream as if the speech and the attack on the Temple had happened on the same day. But I ran across a few problems, and it became hard to write, so I modified it.
Are you going to go into the power of Palpatine?
Hmm... I don't actually have a post planned for Palpatine yet, but its hard not to show his power, especially since he (and Vader) is mainly respnsible for the fall of so many Jedi. As for Anakin... you will be getting little pieces from his point-of-view, but not for a couple posts yet. I plan on keeping this piece MAINLY Jedi-centric, and I also am going to go into the formation of the Rebellion, which will involve a few non-Jedi. But Darth Vader WILL be a big part of what will happen.
Thanks again, both of you! So nice to get positive responses!
OK- This needs to be upped now, so I'm finally going to post my response, lol. Plus I simply have time to now. I'll still have to keep it short though so that we're not late to breakfast with the boys.
Overall, you use wonderful imagery Em and the descriptive quality is excellent. I really did like how you shifted the dream sequence from the "celebration" to the fall of the Temple- The shifting shadow along with the TIE was absolutely a brilliant way to do this. It really helped to build the emotion throughout. I odnt think it would have carreid as much punch as it did had you simply separated the two ideas. It also shows the direct result in a clear fashion, where any other way you could have written it, I don't think woul've had quite the same effect of portraying the Emperor's evilness. This almost makes him look more like a traitor- which he is, but most people just see it all as a take-over not realizing exactly how traitorous all his actions were, to Jedi and the people of the Republic. I just htink it's a little differnet of an image you typically get actually getting to see the awitch befroe you eyes, the welcome and then the ultimate dsetruction of what he was hailing.
And you already know that I think this is great:
"To make sure that your husbands, your children, your friends and neighbors, will never again have to sacrifice their life to the cause of democracy.”
I watched AOTC yesterday with my brother and I had a flashback of this line when Palpatine , after Jar Jar gets him emergency poweres and Palpy's making his lttle speech, he says "I love democracy." hehe!
I've got to get going, as you know wink , but I have one question. Where is Obi-Wan staying right now. The Temple's gone and I'm guessing he got away from wherever he let Anakin slip through his fingers. Is he with those other Jedi I already know about mischief or is he off somewhre by himself......????
gtg- oh! wait- the fridge may always be open, but there aren't always pickles in it!!!!!! [face_tease].
-Rogue
Not bad. I liked how Palpatine rationalized his takeover. First he wants emergency powers to end the crisis -- now he wants those powers extended indefinitely so that it will "never happen again." It makes wonderful sense.
Well, I was hoping for a few more readers before I posted this part, but hey, maybe it'll attract some more. grin
*********************************************
Bail Organa of Alderaan stared at the man he had once respected as his leader in distaste. That he was able to outwardly maintain a neutral, almost courteous manner was a true testimony to his political skills. Inwardly, he fought the urge to spit in the man’s face and receive whatever punishment that action would earn with dignity.
But Palpatine had already proven that such ‘treasonous’ behavior would result in an untimely and dreadful death. Shortly after he had declared himself Emperor and destroyed the Jedi Temple, a group of Bail’s political friends and allies marched defiantly into Palatine’s office, intending to force him to back down. If he had been on planet at the time, he probably would’ve counted himself among the number, but he had been on Alderaan visiting his family. The six Senators, armed only with words, their good intentions, and the Constitution of the Republic, had not had an inkling of what they were going up against.
Until that time, it had not been publicly known that Palpatine was a Sith Lord. The blackened bodies of Bail’s colleagues had been brought in front of the entire Senate, charred faces contorted in a grotesque look of pain, a warning to all who were contemplating any similar acts of defiance.
The news of Palpatine’s powers spread quickly. His Sith abilities discouraged many people from putting out the effort of rebelling, and some even admired his powers, saying that it made him a stronger, more capable leader. Within the Senate there began to be serious talk of compliance, of supporting the tyrant. But even the gruesome picture of Bail’s six friends did not discourage all from challenging the Emperor.
The youngest Senator from Corellia had been bold enough to question the legitimacy of Palpatine’s takeover. In the typical heated Corellian fashion, he compared the Emperor to a bottle of Whyren’s Reserve gone bad. In front of the whole Senate, he told Palpatine that he was “a deceiving enough ‘bottle’ on the outside, but on the inside he was a greasy little cheater with enough ‘kick’ to knock out a wampa”. The rest of the Senate had watched as the Emperor, with a casual flick of the wrist, knocked the Corellian out of his box and let him plummet to the floor of the Senate chamber, resuming business as usual after the sharp crack of the young man’s body hitting the duracreet.
Added to these two incidents was the fact that Finis Valorum’s apartment had been stormed by Palpatine’s soldiers only four days after Palpatine’s rise to power. Supposedly, he had been found a collaborator in the Clone Wars and was executed as a traitor to the Republic.
A Republic that no longer existed.
Bail had watched as the more resistant Senators had each been silently and efficiently murdered. Small, unorganized rebellions had sprung up on distant planets, only to be quashed in a matter of days when Palpatine ordered his clone army to destroy the population. His ‘stormtroopers’, as native Coruscanti had taken to calling them for the way they stormed right in and killed whomever the the Emperor pleased, were vicious, mindless killing machines. It sickened Bail to think that the Senate itself had authorized the creation and use of such an army. “An army of the Republic”, Palpatine had called it. Well, now that army was under Palpatine’s control, and was doing everything it could to destroy the Republic it had once fought for. He watched as Palpatine used his stormtroopers to carefully weed out all who opposed him, and Bail wondered when his time would come.
For he had already made the decision to do everything in his power to stop the tyrannical leader. Bail had always believed in the Republic, in equality and a voice for all people. What Palpatine was doing, the title he had bestowed upon himself, went against all of those beliefs. It was wrong; he knew it, the whole Senate knew it. It was his duty to do something to stop this dictator and restore democracy. But it was clear that open opposition within the Senate would get him nowhere except killed. It was time that a real rebellion was formed, something that would unite all those against the Emperor. Something had to be done to stop the accursed Sith.
But exactly what, and how?
“Don’t you agree, Senator Organa?”
He shook his head clear of his thoughts, and noticed that Palpatine was regarding him closely. He struggled in vain to remember what had been said, but came up with nothing. “I’m sorry, my Liege?”
Palpatine’s eyes narrowed a bit at the edges, and he smiled thinly. “I said, something needs to be done about the dissident Jedi that escaped the Temple’s fate. Don’t you agree?”
Bail felt like hurling, but, knowing that such an action would give his true feelings away, he merely answered, “I feel that whatever you think is best should be done, Emperor.” Inwardly, he cursed himself for not being able or willing to compromise his position and stand up for what he really thought was right. Like spitting in Palpatine’s face.
The corrupt politician nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Bail’s face. The Alderaanian felt beads of sweat form at his temples, but kept his muscles relaxed and his face impassive. Finally, the Emperor turned away.
“Then what I propose is a great Purge of all the Jedi in the galaxy. They are the true enemies, and our new government shall need to be cleansed of all traces of them if we ever intend to attain galaxy-wide peace. We must be free of their heresy, their hypocritical Code, and the light side of the Force altogether!” He smacked his palm down to accent his point, and Bail thought for a moment that he could almost feel the Emperor’s hate for the Jedi radiating off of the man. But then the impression was gone, and Palpatine gave the Senators an indulging smile. “Shall we vote on it?”
Bail suppressed a cynical chuckle. The vote would be unanimous, in Palpatine’s favor. It always was. If he wanted to do anything to rid the galaxy of the madman that now clutched it, his actions could not take place in this arena. In reality, it was no longer a political arena at all, but rather a stage with one spotlight and one microphone, and both were trained on Palpatine. Bail’s job, all that he had trained for his whole life, no longer existed. First opportunity he had to leave planet, out from under the Emperor’s watchful gaze, he was taking it. The sooner, the better. Then he could gather his allies, and together they could organize a resistance that would be the key to Palpatine’s undoing.
A light went off somewhere in Bail’s head, and he realized that the Emperor had just moments before given him the key to his rebellion. Who was Palpatine probably so inwardly afraid of that he felt the need for their complete obliteration? Who would be the perfect leaders, strategists, and fighters for a resistance? Who would be the most interested in seeing a dark Lord of the Sith destroyed? The answer was so obvious that Bail could only wonder why he hadn’t seen in sooner.
The Jedi.
He had his answer. Now if he could only find a way to get away from Palpatine without making himself a suspect in some traitorous plot against the Emperor’s well-being. If he wasn’t already suspect.
It was time to contact Amidala.
Keep up the good work. happy
StB- I'm a fan of Bail myself- he is definetly one of the cooler politicians. Um... I'm probably very stupid and feel silly asking, but just out of curiousity, who is Lorn Pavan? blush Another politician? Just a guess... grin
Thanks again for the encouraging comments!
EDIT- OH!! Just remembered- he was in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, right? It's been awhile since I read that book. I do remember really liking it, even thinking that it might be worth buying. silly I'd put him in my story, jus6t for you, if he weren't dead already!
Well, I guess I got my wish. wink There is definitely a great view of Palpatine in this post. He is always so underscored. I don't know what you think but, I am always left wondering what power the man really possesses. Then, on top of it all, it really pales in comparison to Anakin's. Kinda ironic, huh? I must say I think your portrayal is right on the money. He is still very dignified, he doesn't resort to the infamous hooded sheet that we are all accustomed to. He kinda plays with everyone, enjoying his new power. Well...public power. I like it!! devil
The corrupt politician nodded slowly, his eyes never leaving Bail’s face.
I can imagine Palpatine piercing Bail's thoughts and feeling his hate. Yet...lol..it doesn't phase him. This guy is just plain evil!!
He had his answer. Now if he could only find a way to get away from Palpatine without making himself a suspect in some traitorous plot against the Emperor’s well-being. If he wasn’t already suspect.
It was time to contact Amidala.
Oh wow!! How ironic. Great ending!! So much for anything undercover. Bring on Anakin!!!
You knew this had to be my favorite part Em.
The youngest Senator from Corellia had been bold enough to question the legitimacy of Palpatine’s takeover. In the typical heated Corellian fashion, he compared the Emperor to a bottle of Whyren’s Reserve gone bad. In front of the whole Senate, he told Palpatine that he was “a deceiving enough ‘bottle’ on the outside, but on the inside he was a greasy little cheater with enough ‘kick’ to knock out a wampa”.
laugh I love Corellians. Between their fun with the odds and their booze...
I really have to go to bed- it's almost midnight and you guys know that I could relaly use some sleep.
