	Fan Fiction Review Newsletter 3 Welcome to our third edition. We have made some changes and additions but are still trying to perfect the newsletter. Please leave a post to show that you are reading this listing suggestions, comments, favorite parts, and ideas. If you are interested in becoming a reviewer, please visit this link. In addition we have openings for the following positions: Original Character Story Editor, Art Editor, Poll Editor and Older Fan Fiction Editor. Ratings: The order of the ratings are: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Amazing. New Fan Fictions Title: At the Turn of the Tide Author: Tycalibur Era: ESB, AU Status: In Progress Summary: Set mid-ESB, Luke has the Force vision of Han and Leia and sets off for Bespin, only to have his ship crash-land back on Dagobah. With the X-wing damaged beyond repair, Luke is forced to remain on Dagobah, and his Force-training takes on a strange twist. Meanwhile, on Bespin, Vader realizes Luke will not be coming and he stops Fett from leaving with Solo—leading to a confrontation between Vader and Fett. Stage is also set for Leia, Lando and Chewie to rescue or attempt to rescue Han. Number of Reviewers: 2 Rating: Good-Very Good Comments: This AU shows what could have happened if Luke hadn't been able to get off Dagobah to rescue his friends. The scenes showing how Vader has to change his plans are especially logical and well done. Boba Fett has a larger role than in ROTJ as well -- all in all, very interesting and worth reading. I enjoy this story, and I'm following it. The author has quite a few interesting plot twists and turns and it is compelling to the reader to wonder what is coming next. The writing is somewhat dry, but general writing skills, grammar and punctuation are very good. No major distracting typos. Quotes: The creature was slithering all over the ship, its many arms – almost 10 of them – probing it. The ship was being turned over and over again like a waterwheel. My ship! Luke felt cold, and was trying desperately to suppress his anger. He didn’t know what to do. How was he supposed to rescue Han and Leia now? Title: A Wraith in the Night Author: lightsaber_wielder Era: NJO Status: In Progress Summary: While on a training mission to develop Jedi skills, Tyria and her son Doran run into the Yuuzhan Vong. Number of Reviewers: 2 Rating: Good-Very Good Comments: I liked the way Tyria didn't depend only on her Jedi skills, but also used some of the things she learned with the Wraiths. It is a very interesting story that captures your attention. If you like Tyria in the Wraith Squadron books, you will like this story. Quotes: “Mom, you are a genius,” Doran said. “And evil.” “I was in Wraith Squadron,” she said. “What do you expect?” Title: An Imperial Story Author: JediHunterCommand Era: Imperial OC Status: Completed Summary: An Imperial OC defends a planet against pirate slavers. Number of Reviewers: 2 Rating: Good Comments: The writing style is familiar and easy to get into, a well done job so far for the author's first fic. A good OC fic about a commanding officer doing his duty as best he can after the death of the Emperor. In this fic, he defends a planet against the threat of pirate slavers. Short, but a good read. Quotes: It had seemed like a thousand years since Vaccen had seen his home last. The fighting had taken him far away from the Core Systems, where, for all he knew, the Empire fought its last stand against the rising tide of rebellion. Vaccen longed to be there, fighting for his home . . . but he was here, where duty had sent him. The Empire might fall or rise again, but Vaccen would stand by his post. His own home might be destroyed, but now, perhaps, he could save the homes of others. Title: Salvation Author: Jedi-Princess-Solo Era: Post NJO Status: In Progress Summary: Tahiri is having a hard time after the death of Anakin Solo and it seems that only Jaina can help. Grandfather Anakin lends a tiny bit of a helping hand -- will his hints be enough? Number of Reviewers: 2 Rating: Good-Very Good Comments: An interesting story so far, it expounds details in the latest NJO trilogy. Interesting and good characterizations. Vader also makes a nice appearance. Quotes: I wish you were here, Ani, Jaina thought wistfully as she stepped into the dark of her room. She didn't bother with the lights as she moved to the center of the room, folding her legs as she settled on the ground. You would know what's wrong with Tahiri, and you'd know how to fix it. Title: The Skywalker Prophecy – Episode IV: A Destiny Renewed Author: Darth_Lex Era: OT, AU Status: In Progress Summary: Anakin Skywalker defeated Tyranus and Sidious without falling to the dark side. Two decades later the Jedi discover the prophecy is not yet fulfilled, and a new generation of heroes must join the Chosen One in facing the Skywalker destiny yet again. Number of Reviewers: 1 Rating: Good Comments: Interesting ideas and written professionally. Quotes: And so a few weeks earlier Senator Leia Organa had returned to Naboo to spend her twenty-second birthday with her mother in Theed. As a widow. Vignettes Review Title: Pure Anguish Author: Padawan_Jess_Kenobi Era: TPM Status: Completed Summary: Qui-Gon's final thoughts Number of Reviewers: 1 Rating: Very Good Comments: A heart-wrenching short POV about Qui-Gon's final thoughts as he lays dying. It satisfies the thirst of Qui/Obi fans for a more plausible death scene. Beautifuly done! Quotes: Title: The Secrets of Still Waters Author: -thor- Era: EU Status: Completed Summary: It is the evening of the reception aboard the Lusankya at the end of "Isards Revenge". The surviving Rogues are celebrating their success (and of course their survival). These events take part two or three hours after the last sentences of "Isards Revenge" ... Number of Reviewers: 2 Rating: Good Comments: A worthy read into the Rogue's attempts to fix up their friend with a girl. Great read and quite amusing at parts! If you like the Rogues you should like this story. Quotes: Myn finally managed to jerk his arm free. "I said I´m not interested!" "And I said I wouldn´t let you ... Come on, Donos. It will be fun ... You need to get in touch with people ... Enjoy your life ..." Wes kept on babbling without break. Slowly Myn was getting angry. "Wes," he tried to interject. "Wes!" Again no reaction. And then his annoyance took over. "Wes! Wes, I´m married!" Title: Blankie Author: Sock_of_Darth_Vader Era: Post NJO Status: Completed Summary: A story of little Ben Skywalker Number of Reviewers: 2 Rating: Good-Very Good Comments: Highly amusing story involving Ben Skywalker and a blanket. Well written and a great one to read after you've had a horrible day. Well done! Quotes: "Blankie older than Daddy?" "Yes, it is. Blankie's a very old blanket. And very unhygenic." "Blankie was Daddy's. Blankie mine now." "That's right." "Blankie his Daddy's too?" I had a sudden vision of Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith, tall and menacing, complete with face-mask, lightsaber and fluffy red blanket. It took Jedi control to keep down the shriek of hysterical laughter that threatened to overtake me. Older Stories Title: A Twist of Fate Author: Bellyup Era: TPM, AU Status: Completed Summary: An AU covering what would have happened if Anakin had not won the podrace. Number of Reviewers: 3 Rating: Fair-Good Comments: This is an AU that starts with the scene of Anakin not winning the pod race, but quickly turns to the story of Qui-Gon falling in love with Schmi Skywalker at first sight, and plotting to marry her. I thought the description of the TPM podrace and its aftermath when Ani lost was well-done and made sense for all of the characters. I especially appreciated the nominal use of JarJar – he helped the story along without being annoying or overdone. The writing style was easy to read and flowed nicely. However, I did find the plot baffling and too sweet when it morphed into a love story between Qui-Gon and Shmi. It might have been stronger if this fic had been split up into two stories rather than one. Quotes: Back at the ship, Obi-Wan put down the comlink and glanced at Panaka who was watching him with interest and curiosity. “Well,” Panaka asked, “What did he say?” Obi-Wan took a deep breath. “Nothing good I’m afraid,” he hesitated before continuing, “We’ve lost our ship.” Panaka’s brown face turned a surprising colour of magenta, one that Obi-Wan did not know he could accomplish. Grammar Tips 1) Whenever you write the word "it's", remind yourself that this is actually a contraction of "it is" and read the sentence aloud, substituting the words "it is" for the word "it's". If the sentence makes sense, you're using it right. But if you read a sentence like "The droid lost it is head", you should use "its" without the apostrophe, as in: "The droid lost its head." 2) Among verses between: Use between when you are drawing a comparison involving only two persons or things. Use among when three or more things are involved. “Han Solo and Luke Skywalker were hoping to divide the money between the two of them but then they found out that the princess was impoverished. Meanwhile Chewbacca wanted the money to be distributed among all three of the heroes so that he could purchase his own ship.” Plot Bunnies The Plot Bunny Theme Song: [Shirley Bassey] The minute you wrote in the thread I could tell you were a scribe of distinction, A real big author -- good writing, so refined! Say, wouldn’t you like to know What’s going on in my mind? So let me get right to the point; I don’t pop my plot for every pen I see. Hey, big author! Write a little fic with me! [/Shirley Bassey] Reflective plot bunny looking for ‘copycat’ author to mirror Han-Leia-Luke triangle from OT; shortly after Obi-Wan kisses Padme for the first time, (or she kisses him to get Anakin riled up?), Qui-Gon appears to him and announces, ”She is your sister.” Obi-Wan says "I know. Somehow ... I've always known." Then Qui-Gon says, "Your feelings do you justice, Obi-Wan, but bury them deep, or they could be made to turn Anakin to the Dark Side." Let’s listen to the ominous music together! Small AU bunny seeks author with big bottle of Bunny-Gro: What if Vader disobeyed Palpatine's order in RotJ to wait for Luke at the bunker? What if he got down to the surface, and just kept on going, following the Force to find Luke and Leia both in the Ewok village before the battle? Authors with carrots and Bunny-Chow also welcome. Bouncing bunny seeks relationship with NJO-friendly author for spelunking expedition into the depths of this scenario: what if the Jedi weren't killed off? What if they were just exiled? What would have happened if they’d been forced to leave the known regions of the galaxy and their memory erased? Many years later, the Vong make a desperate push towards Coruscant. In the midst of the open moments another fleet from beyond the outer rim arrives led by some of these Jedi. Their fleet crushes the Vong, and now suddenly there is a New Jedi Order, and an Older, Unknown Jedi Order. And when it comes to relationships, why stop at just one? Bring your friends; the more the merrier! Staff Quotes 1) “What kind of laxative causes people to hallucinate an Imp attack?” Pash demanded. “Uh … the homemade kind?” Solut replied, withering slightly as Pash and Half glared at him. From We’re Doomed, a small Pash Cracken fic. 2) “She does not believe we could confuse the Vong.” Kell said to Face. “Tsk, tsk, Tahiri,” Face said. “You have not even heard my best idea.” “This is a good one.” Kell added enthusiastically. “What is your best idea?” Tahiri asked Face in exasperation. “I think we should load our missile tubes with sticky machine parts. Then when we are in a battle we can shoot the Vong’s ships with the sticky machinery. Once it gets stuck on their ships they will be so confused they will start shooting the machinery off their own ships and there we go. They will end up shooting themselves and we can sit back and watch.” “What keeps the sticky machinery from sticking in your missile tubes?” Tahiri asked. “Oh,” Face said, his expression crestfallen. 	I think Kettch took one or two of the newest stories from each board.
