LOL, I like the little update sub-title. History repeats itself Hoth-style. So true

Actually, I think it works better this time around than it did in ESB.

Hey Geoff! Welcome to TFN's fanfic boards! Are you gonna post N'Rall Wrath now that its finished?
Note to the readers:
Warcry is the last author in the five author team behind the stories in this series.
N'Rall Wrath
is a prelude of sorts to
The Beginning of the End
.

RE: Evacuation (Prelude to The Way of the Truth) update coming soon (for real this time!)
PART III: Accidents
Children of the Ancients
-class gunship
Rra'shaan
Tzed'lama'ruun stared out the forward viewport of the
Rra'shaan
in shocked horror as the enemy ships faded into vision. The forces under his command were far too far away from the rest of the battle group and on top of that, they had arrived several seconds ahead of schedule, giving the Accidents warning enough to interdict the system and keep the main battle group a ways back from the base. He would die today for certain; if not in battle for the glory of the Ancients, he would be killed for incompetence anyhow.
What's done is done. If I have to die anyhow, I may as well make the best of it...or is there another way?
Tzed turned his comm system to the private frequency for his division of the battle group. "Attention, all third division controllers! I want to push through these ships and destroy as much of that colony as we can before the rest of the battle group makes it through that asteroid field!" A flurry of acknowledgements came back over the comm system. If his division could do most or all of the job themselves before the rest of the fleet even got within firing range, he might be able to remedy the situation.
I might even beat Szul'cul'ama and graduate at the top of the class!
The
Rra'shaan
and its sister ships plunged into the group of accident ships and all hell broke lose.
The pilot of the
Rra'shaan
jinked and juked the ship around as he weaved through enemy ships and fire. Suddenly, the bridge tower of an
Excel
-class picket ship loomed in the forward viewport. "Concentrate all fire on that bridge tower!" Tzed barked at his gunners. "But hold your super-torpedoes for my mark." Phased gamma rays and conventional torpedoes flared out at the bridge, weakening the shields. The shields grew weaker. The bridge grew closer. "Mark! Evasive maneuvers! Get us out of the blast zone!" A super-torpedo streaked towards the bridge as the
Rra-shaan
pulled a snap-roll and dive to starboard that most ships larger than a snubfighter would have had trouble handling. The Children's ships, however, had exception speed and maneuverability for ships their size and completed the maneuver with ease. The bridge tower erupted in a giant ball of flame and debris behind them as the
Rra-shaan
streaked away. As they came back up from their dive, Tzed saw that the entire tower had been completely obliterated.
Suddenly, the
Rra-shaan
shuddered as a turbolaser blast caught its starboard aft. His smile suddenly gone, Tzed called for a damage report as he pulled himself back to his feet.
"Aft shields are gone and we've lost our trans-hyperdrive engines. Everything else seems fine," one of his bridge officers reported.
"Redirect energy from the forward shields to aft," Tzed ordered.
They made a strafing run on the belly of a
Constrictor
-class Star Destroyer, doing minor damage as they passed, and took a few minor hits on the forward shield from the wing of TIE Interceptors that had launched from its hanger. Then they were past the fleet and Ahd-Phyllius loomed large in the forward viewport.
"Begin teleporting BA troopers into the Accident base as soon as we're within maximum range," Tzed instructed. He smiled inwardly. His task force would win this battle by themselves before the main battle group even got within firing range and he would be given the best initial command possible, he was sure of it.
Ahd-Phyllius Base
Jeth ran out of his room as soon as he could, even as he was still sealing his flight suit. Riina was already pulling on her helmet as they sprinted lightly towards the hanger. Alarms were still blaring throughout the base and General Osborne's voice could be heard over the intercom urging everyone to man their battlestations.
The main hanger was filled with pilots and mechanics scrambling to prepare the ships for launch. Most of the ships in the hanger were starfighters, C-Wings, X-Wings, TIE Defenders, and Clawcraft. There were also a few smuggling freighters and an occasional shuttle. Jeth and Riina sprinted lightly through the tangle of ships and personnel and keyed the door to the smaller side hanger used by Positive Squadron, one of the resistance movement's most elite fighter units. Created specifically to fight the Negative Race, Positive Squadron had to reach an equal measure of prestige and fame as Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron over the generations in which the Negs have been in occupation of the galaxy.
Jeth quickly scrambled up the access ladder to the cockpit of his C-Wing and began running through his preflight procedures as the rest of the squadron entered the hanger in twos and threes. Before long, the big roof doors slid open and the C-Wings rose into the tunnels that led to the surface of Ahd-Phyllius. The base was located several kilometers underground to make it hard to locate as well as to discourage teleporting BA troopers directly into the base. Even if the Transfer Distortion Field Generators failed, the Negs would have to bring their ships almost down to ground level to teleport their BA troopers to the base.
[All units, report in,] Byjie's voice came over the comm. His comm unit didn't have the vocal distortion that was traditional for starfighters of New Republic or Galactic Alliance origin; it would have made his Wookiee speech unintelligible. Jeth didn't pay much attention to the status reports of the first two flights, listening again when James Loran's affirmation of all-systems-go came through the comm, starting off the status reports for Three Flight.
"Ten here, ready to Balance the Equation," Seth's voice announced. Seth Fardreamer was supposed to be a direct descendant of Cole Fardreamer, the engineer who designed the C-Wing starfighter to preserve pilot lives during the Yuuzhan Vong war, shortly before the Negative Race invaded. Most parts of the galaxy had lost any histories dating back to before the Negative Race invaded, but the Jedi had preserved a sense of history well and Ahd-Phyllius was one of the few resistance bases left where anti-Jedi sentiments were not prevalent.
"Eleven here, everything looks positive," Jeth reported, keying his comm. As if to intentionally contradict him, the air directly above and ahead of his fighter began to shimmer and suddenly limbs, bits of armor, and a spray of blood in a deep, and very dark shade of red appeared in time for his fighter to fly right through the cloud of debris. Near-black blood splattered against his viewport before he had a chance to bring his particle shields online, reducing his visibility to almost nothing. "Shavit, all Pluses, forward particle shields up NOW!" He couldn't tell if the rest of the squadron had brought their shields up in time or not.
Jeth's fighter suddenly buckled hard as the belly of the C-Wing scraped against the wall of the vertical tunnel they were flying up through. An alarm began to wail as his ventral particle shields gave out. "Jeth!" Riina cried over the comm.
"I'll be alright," Jeth responded through gritted teeth. He activated the button to allow his R2 unit to eject and then punched the cockpit release. There was a loud pop as his cockpit detached itself from the rest of the fighter. The roof of the cockpit crumpled slightly as it smashed against the side of the tunnel wall, but Jeth used the dovin bassal to prevent a ricochet and to control his decent.
The C-Wing had been designed so that if a pilot's fighter was about to blow, rather than going EV, they could eject the entire cockpit of the fighter, which then doubled as an escape pod, giving the pilot a much better chance of being recovered safely. The famous Jedi Charat Hul, an ancestor of Master Cedric in fact, had flown a modified version of the C-Wing that replaced the standard escape-pod thrusters in the cockpit with a dovin bassal. The dovin bassal could then be used to provide extra shielding or propulsion during combat, much as it would in a coralskipper and also served to control the escape pod if the pilot had to eject.
With the help of Jedi legends Corran Horn, Danni Quee, Anakin Solo, and Tahiri Veila had helped Charat add the dovin bassal to his C-Wing and then they stored detailed instructions for the modifications into plant DNA on Corellia. About a century ago, those plans had mysteriously resurfaced and had subsequently been used to upgrade all of the C-Wing fighters used by the Galactic Resistance Force.
Unfortunately
, Jeth reflected,
the designers of the C-Wing and its modifications probably never intended for the cockpit to eject while flying up a sheer vertical shaft
. As the shockwave of his ship exploding buffeted his escape pod, he hoped that it had been the wall and not one of his squad mates that the body of the fighter had crashed into.
"JETH!" Riina screamed in his helmet.
"I said I'll be...." Jeth started again, but then the force of the shockwave overloaded his dovin bassal and he lost control of his decent. "Negspawn Riina, just worry about vaping some capsules! I' can take care of..." Jeth cut off as his pod came crashing back down to the hanger floor. He gritted his teeth and braced himself as it bounced back up a few feet and then came crashing back down again. Jeth couldn't see what he had hit because of the black-red blood splattered all over his viewport, but he must have hit something because the viewport suddenly shattered in at him, spraying blood-stained bits of transparisteel across his face, visor, and flight suit. Then his head impacted on whatever had shattered the viewport and the world went black.
Chett Madine and his crew were already in the hanger his ship shared with Positive Squadron when the alarm went off. His ship, the
Dreamwave Renegade
, was an ancient Corellian Force-10 light freighter that had undergone heavy modifications over the past several hundred years to the point where almost none of the original ship was left at all beneath the hull. Sleek and fast, the ship had been a favorite among smugglers shortly before the Negative Race invaded. The design was still popular where it could be found, but they were produced by hidden shipyards or in secret private facilities; nothing had come out of the Corellian system for the past several hundred years.
Except the
Renegade.
She's the only original Corellian Engineering Corporation vehicle outside the system that hasn't been around since before the Negs took Coruscant.
100 years ago, Chett's ship had been used by his and Levon's great-grandparents to leave the Corellian system after they had discovered plans to upgrade the escape-pod cockpit modules of C-Wing starfighters to incorporate dovin bassals. For the first and only time since the interdiction field and mine field had gone up permanently, the Corellian government had authorized a ship to leave the system in the hope that, if there were still hidden pockets of natives left in the rest of the galaxy--and they had to assume that pre-occupation with other pockets of resistance were what was keeping the Negative Race from mounting a full-scale invasion of the Corellian system--the C-Wing upgrades would allow them to survive that much longer. The Diktat had provided an IFF transponder code for the freighter to allow it to pass through the giant mine field around the Corellian system without being targeted by the mines and the ship had made it out of the system, though it had presumably taken a generation to reach the edge of the massive interdiction field in the system.
Chett often wondered what had become of the homeworld of his ancestors. Most people who were of Corellian decent still considered themselves to be Corellians even though those outside the system had never even seen Corellia. Many refugees had fled to Corellia even after the interdiction field went up, choosing to live out the rest of their lives in transit at sublight speeds so their children could live in peace and safety on Corellia. What had become of them, no one knew. Though he knew he could safely return to Corellia due to the IFF transponder code still in his ship and live out his life in relative peace, Chett also knew his place was here, fighting the Negs.
Or fixing up this hunk-o-junk so I can fight the Negs!
Reliable was the last word most people would use to describe the
Renegade
which is why Chett and his crew were here in the docking bay rather than playing sabacc with Levon, Jeth, and Riina. The sudden sounding of the alarm made him glad he had chosen to work on the
Renegade
now rather than putting it to play sabacc.
"Negspit, girls, we better get this bucket of bolts back together fast!" he called out from under the engine block. "Shera, how much longer do you think it will take to finish fixing the hyperdrive motivator?"
"Should be aboud another ten minutsh ad mosht," Shera replied around the hydrospanner in her mouth. "Of courshe, there'sh shtill no way of checking to shee whether the repairsh work or not shord of attempting an acshual hypershpashe jump."
"Well you better finish it then," Chett said. "If the Negs are here, we may need to high-tail it out in a hurry and I don't want to be stranded in system."
"I'll do my besht." Shera grunted.
After several more moments of tinkering and tuning, Chett rolled out from under the engine block in time to see Torrin A'kla, his Caamasi copilot, appear in the doorway to the engine room.
"Shields should be back in working order," Torrin said. Her golden fur was smeared with black, oily smudges that somehow almost seemed to complement the red stripes that shot through it. A red leather toolbelt with golden embroidery hung around her slender waist.
"Good, I think I've got the repulsors back to optimal working performance too. I'll go out and watch while you run a quick field test of the shields. I want to make absolutely sure they're working good with the Negs here." The Caamasi nodded and disappeared in the direction of the bridge as Chett headed towards the landing ramp.
As he exited the
Renegade
, Chett could see the last of Positive Squadron's fighters beginning to rise towards the tunnel out to Ahd-Phyllius XIII's surface. He saw his friend Riina snap a salute to him as her C-Wing drifted past and he returned it with a grin. Turning back to look at his ship, he pulled out his comlink and activated it.
"Alright, let's give this a try," he said. He could see Torrin nod through the bridge viewport as she moved to activate the repulsors.
"Repulsors activated," she reported back through the comlink as the ship rose several meters into the air.
"Okay, good, they seem to be working fine. Now bring the shields online," he instructed stepping back a ways from the ship. If the shields failed the test, he had no desire to be within squashing distance when the
Renegade
came crashing back down on her landing gear.
"Shields online," Torrin reported.
"Alright, now cut the repulsors," Chett said, stepping back a bit more. He'd grown up with the
Renegade
and all too often she failed this kind of shield test. The ship dropped a few feet and then by some miracle of the Force, it stopped, being kept above the ground by the shields.
Chett keyed his comlink and started to tell Torrin to bring the repulsors back on and then cut the shield when something exploding some distance up the shaft cut him off in mid sentence.
"I have a bad feeling about this," Torrin's voice came from the comlink.
"Yeah, me too," Chett replied, looking up towards the tunnel to the surface. Suddenly a battered and messy-looking C-Wing escape pod came into view, crashing down from above. Screaming curses in several languages, Chett scrambled for cover under Shera's X-Wing fighter.
He was pleased to see the shields hold up even as the escape pod bounced off it and crashed into the nose of the X-Wing, which smashed through the escape pod's viewport. Though the starfighter shuddered above him, Chett was relieved to see that its landing gear held up as the escape pod fell from the X-Wing's nose to land with a
thud!
on the floor in front of it.
Chett rushed over to the wrecked escape pod and pulled the hatch open as Torrin and Shera came running out from the
Renegade
. He climbed into the cockpit and found Jeth still strapped to his flight chair, unconscious and bleeding. Chett quickly undid the crash webbing that kept Jeth in his seat and pulled his friend out of the cockpit. He looked over to Shera and Torrin.
"Shera, you better finish work on the hyperdrive motivators and then report to Master Hul. Torrin and I will take Jeth to a bacta tank." Shera nodded and dashed back up the ramp into the ship as Torrin and Chett held up Jeth's unconscious form between them and headed for the medical ward.
