Oh yay! First one!

Jaina bit her lip nervously. She was meeting Jag's parents today. They were spending Christmas together. She and Jag had been dating for three years. The war with the Yuuzhang Vong had just ended a few months ago.

"Nervous?" Jag asked, looking over at Jaina. They were in a rental speeder.

"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Jaina asked.

"Yes, they'll love you, I promise."

They pulled up to the huge Fel estate on Csilla. Jag helped Jaina out of the speeder, carrying gifts.

Syal Fel looked out the window. She could see her son and his fiancé Jaina Solo walk up to the house. They were each carrying a stack of gifts. Syal rushed to open the door.

"Hello Jagged! Here, just set those down," Syal hugged her son. She then turned to Jaina, "And you must be Jaina Solo. I'm Syal Fel, please to meet you."

"Thank you. You have a beautiful home," Jaina shook Syal's hand. Soontir came into the foyer.

"Father," Jag greeted. Soontir hugged his son. Wynessa Fel walked in next, "JAG!"

"Hello Wyn. You get more beautiful each time I see you," Jag hugged his sister. He then took Jaina's hand.

"Mom, Dad, Wyn, this is my fiancé, Jaina Solo."

"Pleased to meet you Jaina," Wynessa said, shaking her hand.

Jaina nodded to her. Soontir nodded to her, "Are you well, Jaina?"

She nodded, "Yes, thank you."

"Come into the house. Wyn, show Jaina her room. Jag, here, carry those into the other room," Syal instructed.

Jag nodded. Wyn took Jaina upstairs. She took her to the guest bedroom.

"There's a refresher attached. Just come down when you're ready too," Wyn said. She turned and left.

Dinner went well. Syal kept most the conversation by asking Jag and Jaina about the war and her brother Wedge. After dinner, they moved to the living room.

"So Jaina, how is your father?" Soontir asked.

"He's doing well."

"Still flying that hunk of junk?"

"Yes," Jaina laughed.

"Jaina, we're sorry about our brother," Syal told her.

"Thank you."

They continued talking late into the evening until Syal asked Jag to help her clean up in the kitchen. Wyn went to her room.

"Jaina?" Soontir asked.

"Yes?"

"Is your father happy about you marrying a Fel?"

"Not really."

A grin broke out on Soontir's face, "Then I am definitely okay with you and my son's relationship. There's only one father-in-law who can be grumpy about that."

Jaina grinned. She was so nervous about receiving Soontir's approval. That was the best gift she could receive from her husband-to-be's family.

Great job FelsGoddess. I'm glad Soontir was happy with the relationship.

Hehe, never ever listen to a song and think about what you could do with it. Here's my entry.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Jaina,” Jag said in surprise as he answered the comm call his mother had said was for him. To find the caller was his girlfriend was a shock to the young fighter pilot. They had talked to each other only a few days before. After the Vong war he had asked her to come with him to his home planet of Csilla but she had said that she needed time, time to come to terms with everything that had happened to her during the war. He had given her that time even though it nearly killed him. That was six months ago and even though they had kept in regular contact they never commed more than once a week due to the financial cost of a hyperspace communication from Mon Calamari to Csilla. For her to comm two days before her scheduled time was unusual and more than worrisome for the pilot.
“Jag,” Jaina said, her holo shifting as if she was squirming under his gaze. He frowned as she looked away or down, not willing to meet his eyes. His heart sank as the silence she had fallen into since saying his name lengthened. “I want…I need….” For a moment a look of annoyance swept across her face, causing the blue transparent holo to contort. “Jag, I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Jag asked with trepidation. He worried that with the time they had been apart she would have fallen out of love with him. It was one of many fears his nightmares had insistently bombarded him with while he tried to sleep.
“I was wrong,” Jaina said, her holo showing that she was staring at whatever the holostation sat on. “I should have come with you when you asked.”
Jag’s jaw dropped, he could not help it. Of all the things she could have said to him that was not what he had expected. Mentally shaking himself, he asked the one question he muffled brain could come up with. “What changed your mind?” Jag found his heart constricting as she explained.
“Two days ago Twins Suns was patrolling when a rogue group of Vong exited hyperspace. We hailed them, comming to find out if they were friendly or not. They did not answer our hails and attacked. In the furball my ship was hit with a series of plasma and I had to go EV. We won the furball but I had to spend the rest of the day and some of the night in the bacta tank for wounds suffered while exiting my burning X-Wing. As I lay in the tank, I realized that I was wrong. I wanted to wait until the perfect time to continue our relationship. I wanted everything to be settled and peaceful should we decide to marry and have a family. I realized that it could never be that way, not in this galaxy. There are too many who oppose peace and if I waited on them to fall into line and let the galaxy rest, I would wait forever.”
Jag wanted to reach out and take her into his arms. He cursed under his breath, angry at himself that he was halfway across the galaxy when this happened to her. He hated to feel helpless and right now, that was exactly how he felt. He had promised to be there for her. In taking this job and being back home instead of there, he had failed her.
“Please don’t blame yourself,” Jaina said, as if she had read his mind. “Maybe this was the Force’s way of hitting me over the head. Force knows as stubborn as I am, that would be the only way to get my attention.”
Jag had to smile at that. If Jaina was cracking remarks like that, then her time EV and in the bacta had done little to change her personality. Just made her that much wiser than before.
“Is the offer still open?”
Jaina’s question caused Jag to sit up. He stared at her, surprised once again. He grinned. Only Jaina had the power to surprise him like that. He was too observant otherwise. His fighter pilot training had seen to that. When she squirmed once more, Jag realized she was waiting on his answer and waiting fearfully. “The offer was always opened,” he answered, giving her the smile he reserved only for her. “Nothing could rescind that.”
Jaina smiled and Jag’s heart leaped into his throat. He glanced up at the holocalender on the wall next to the comm station and realized that now was a perfect time for Jaina to come to Csilla. Ice Fest, a week long festival centered on giving loved ones gifts and spending time with family, started soon. And he had the perfect gift to give her.
“Jaina, how about I meet you over Ansion and pick you up? It would be better than telling you the hyperspace routes to Csilla over the holonet.”
“My X-Wing was totaled so I will have to meet you on Ansion after begging someone here for a ride.” She frowned from a moment. “I could ask Jacen,” she said. “He found a small cargo freighter and we have been refitting it so he could travel the galaxy and find his path.”
“I’ll meet you on Ansion at 0900 hours seven days from now,” Jag said.
“It’s a date,” Jaina replied, smiling.
~~~~~~~~~~~

“I don’t love you anymore.”

Jaina walked through the retail center of Csilla in a numbed daze. A couple days before she and Jag had landed on the ice covered planet and she had thought things were okay with them. Now she was not so sure. She thought back on her first evening planetside when she met Jag’s family instead of the words she had heard from Jag when she passed by his room on her way to a guest room that had been given to her.

At first glance, Jaina could not tell a fighter pilot’s family lived at the Fel estate. Located several kilometers from Ac’siel, a huge underground city on Csilla, the massive, black stone structure sat in stark contrast to the ice flat it rested upon. Jaina whistled as Jag piloted the family’s yacht, the Starflare, across the blinding white expanse. Having about the same footprint as the Jedi’s Great Temple on Yavin 4, the manor soared to the skies. It reached, Jaina guessed, half the height of the temple.

As they entered a wide hanger bay at the back of the manor, Jag told Jaina that not all of the structure was the house proper. The entire west wing had been built for the sole purpose of growing things that originally grew on Corellia. He informed her that was one of his father’s passions.

They entered through a small, plain doorway, ending up in a rather tiny room. Jaina glanced at Jag questioningly as he first removed his outer coat and then hers and hung them over what looked like a ventilation slab. Jaina knew the slab was what was keeping the room warm. She could feel it from where she stood.

“Ice room,” Jag explained as he sat down on a stone bench behind them. “When we come over land this is how we come in the house. Mom hates to have snow and sleet tracked into the house.” He began taking his boots off and then looked at her. “That means boots off in the house.”

Jaina sat down and slipped her boots off. Jag took them and placed them next to his on a rack over another of the ventilation slabs. Jaina guessed that it was to keep the boots warm for the next time the family went out.

“Now,” Jag said, opening a small alcove under the bench. “Do you want to wear your socks or house slippers?”

“Socks,” Jaina answered. “At home we always wore them.”

Jag nodded, took her hand, and led her into the rest of the house. He led her through a food prep area, heading for the east side of the house. He had said his family was in the smaller living area and he wanted her to meet them before giving her a tour. Jaina glanced around, admiring the décor.

Strangely enough for someone who was once a holoactress, Syal Fel had decorated her house to have a more lived in feel. Old Corellian furniture sprinkled the rooms they passed and the corridors they walked down. Odd trinkets, some from Corellia, other from Coruscant, and still others that Jaina guessed was from Csilla rested upon the different sized tables they passed. On the walls were holos of Corellian landscapes and of the family at different points in time. Jag pointed out everyone that had him in it and told her of the trinkets that they passed which he brought to his mother.

Finally they reached the room where the Fel’s waited. Just before they entered the room, Jag gave Jaina a kiss on the cheek.

“You think they will like me?” she asked, warily. She did not want to cause a problem between Jag and his family.

“They’ll love you,” Jag assured her. “I haven’t been able to stop talking about you since I got home so they already know a lot about you.” Jaina blushed and saw an odd look cross Jag’s face. She frowned, questioningly. “You’re beautiful when you blush,” Jag whispered leaning forward, his lips barely touching hers.

“Jag will you please – ewwww!”

A younger female voice broke the moment and Jag straightened. Jaina found herself staring into the face of a young blond haired woman. For a moment the face was contorted in an expression of disgust then the woman caught sight of Jaina and the expression cleared.

“You must be Jaina,” the young woman said. She took Jaina’s hand. “I’m Wyn, come on in.”

Jaina had a second to glance at Jag before she was dragged into the room by Wyn. He smiled, apologetically. The rest of the family stood as soon as she fully made into the wooden paneled room. Jaina was surprised to find only two other people in the room. She had thought Jag had another, younger brother. Figuring he was in another part of the house, she smiled at Jag’s parents. She felt Jag stepped up behind her and had trouble following the introductions because of his presence in the Force washing over her, covering her in a protective envelope.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Jag’s mother’s voice drew Jaina back from the wonderful daydream she had been having. Jaina blinked, regaining her composure and praying to any deity listening that Jag’s family had not caught her being so inattentive.

“Jagged has told us a lot about you,” Syal continued, her tone cheerful. “I’m so glad you decided to come visit us.”

“Yeah, and you picked a perfect time to do it,” Wyn piped up from the chair she had plopped into after dragging Jaina in.

“What Wyn means is that the Ice Fest is a time where family and friends spend time together.”

“That and there’s the gift giving.”

“Wyn,” Soontir reprimanded. “You know that’s not the most important part of Ice Fest. It’s being able to spend time with loved ones.”

“As I was saying,” Syal continued, her tone still cheerful, “is that because of the holiday we are, or will, be all in one place and can get to know you better.”

Jaina felt Jag’s presence flicker worriedly. “Cem still hasn’t got here?” he asked.

“No,” Soontir answered. “It took longer to get out of the academy after that fair-haired stunt he pulled than he thought. He’ll be here tomorrow.”

Jaina heard and felt Jag chuckle as Soontir made his way over to her. Jaina stared up into the man’s remaining eye, refusing to cower before him. She had never done so before and she was not about to start now. Presently the older man smiled and though he kept his eyes on Jaina he directed his comment to Jag.

“Son, I’d say she’s a keeper.” Jaina’s confusion must have shown through because Soontir continued. “No, I wasn’t happy when I learned the real reason Jagged did not come back. However, since his had been back your name has never been far from his lips. I realized that he felt for you what I feel for his mother. That and the fact you are a pilot gave me reason to get to know you and see for myself what Jagged sees in you.”

Jaina smiled. “Thank you, sir.”

“Jaina.”

Wyn’s voice caused Jaina to jerk back into reality. She glanced around, seeing a knot of beings staring at her concerned. Wyn and Syal each had a hand on her shoulder.

“Are you okay, dear?” Syal asked. “You spaced out for a moment there and wouldn’t answer us when we called your name.”

“I’m fine,” Jaina said, blinking. “Just a lot on my mind.”

Syal did not appear convinced. “You sure sweetie?”

“I’m sure.” Jaina sighed in relief when Syal did not press the issue.

“Come, you still need to get Jag a gift,” Syal said.

As they continued on Jaina wondered if she should even bother. For the past few days Jag had been secretive and spending a lot of time in his room or on the comm with a female Chiss that was not Shawnkyr. With a heavy heart and questions racing through her mind, Jaina followed the Fel women into another store.

*********

“Excuse me,” Jaina said after a few hours in the shopping district. “I need to go to the refresher.”

“Okay,” Syal said. “We need to hurry, though. We have to get home and get ready for the Charity Talent Competition.”

Jaina nodded and walked off. The CTC was an annual event. Every Ice Fest young Chiss and humans competed against one another. The credvoucher prizes for the top three performers were given to the charity of the winner’s choice. Jaina had wanted to beg out of going, opting instead to stay at the Fel estate but Jag had informed her that he was going to compete and wanted her there. Jaina had agreed.

Now though she wondered why she had. She was certain those words she heard were for her. She could not figure out why he did not love her anymore and if the government had not grounded all spaceships until the festival ended Jaina believed Jag would have taken her home. Where in the few days she had been there did everything go so wrong?

********

Jaina and the Fel family, minus Jag sat down at one of the closer tables in the Grand Hall in Ac’siel. Dressed in the red dress she wore to the Hapian ball, Jaina noted the attention was getting from the human males in the room. Wyn, jokingly, said that Jag would have to keep an eye on those guys or they might ask Jaina out. Briefly she wondered if she should accept. If those words were any indication, Jag did not care anymore.

“Tonight,” a board shouldered male Chiss said, drawing, Jaina’s attention. “We start the competition with Jagged Fel, recently appointed liaison to the Galactic Free Alliance.”

Jaina watched Jag walk out from behind a heavy curtain, trailed by a familiar female Chiss.

“Hmm,” Soontir said. “I guess Savian is going to help Jagged.”

Jaina frowned, wondering how they knew the female Jag had been talking to on the comm. Then she wondered if they entire family knew Jag’s feelings but because of hospitality, acted if nothing was wrong. A sweet melody caused her to drop that line of thought. She looked up to see the female Chiss playing some kind of keyed instrument and Jag standing next to a microphone not far from her table. When he began to sing, Jaina’s jaw dropped.

I can't hide the way I feel about you anymore
I can't hold the hurt inside, keep the pain out of my eyes anymore
My tears no longer waiting, my resistance ain't that strong
My mind keeps recreating a life with you alone
And I'm tired of pretending that I don't love you anymore

With a start, Jaina realized that she had misunderstood the words she had heard. Thinking back, she guessed that when she had heard them he was either practicing or writing the song and the comm calls were to coordinate practices times. Then she grimaced, remembering the cold way she had been treating him since then. She resolved to apologize as soon as they were alone and hoped he would forgive her.

Let me make one last appeal to show you how I feel about you
'Cause there's no one else I swear that holds a candle anywhere next to you
My heart can't take the beating, not having you to hold
A small voice keeps repeating deep inside my soul
It says I can't keep pretending I don't love you anymore

I've got to take the chance or let it pass by
If I expect to get on with my life

My tears no longer waiting, my resistance ain't that strong
My mind keeps recreating a life with you alone
And I'm tired of pretending I don't love you anymore

Jaina watched as Jag left the stage and walked up to her. He knelt in front of her, holding a small opened box, in which an ice clear diamond rested. Jaina gasped.

“Jaina Solo,” he began, softly. “Will you marry me?”

For a moment she was speechless, feeling the stares of everyone in the room. Then she felt Jag’s apprehension spike. She reached over and caressed his cheek and whispered her answer.

“Yes.”

Date Posted: 12/5/04 1:28am Subject: Barefoot_XO's entry, Encounter on Brentaal
This is probably my first fic ever in which Tahiri is not a character. I hope you like it. It's my entry.

~~

Encounter on Brentaal

~~

It was mid-winter on the planet Brentaal, when the Fel family stepped off of the Starflare and explored the beautiful world. Syal Antilles-Fel looked around curiously and then her gaze shifted back to Jag. “Jagged... Didn’t Miss Solo say that she would meet us at the spaceport?”

Jag felt an icy claw of fear clasp his heart. His mother and father had not been enthusiastic about meeting this girl that they knew nothing about and whom he professed to love. Wyn had been no help whatsoever, going as far as to discourage the trip, although Jag strongly believed she was just trying to find time with her own boyfriend. Cem had been the only one to stick up for Jag. Cem was, in fact, the reason they were here. She had asserted that when (not if) Jag married Jaina, it would be nice if the family had at least met her. That had had mother and father agreeing very fast, even with Wyn’s whining. Now it looked like it would all be coming apart. If Jaina didn’t show up, that would not make a favourable impression on his family at all.

~~

Jag’s mind drifted back. He remembered the day she had called him on Csilla...

“Jag. I-I’ve made a decision. It affects both of us, so I thought you should know.”

“What is it, Jaina?”

“I think it’s time I met your family, Jag...”

“You’re coming to Csilla! That’s great...”

“No! No Jag. I want to meet in neutral territory.”

“Neutral territory... Jaina, these are my parents... This is not a military conflict.”

“I know, I know. Look, did I force you to walk into my parents’ home and declare how you felt about me...?”

“Okay, okay. But where? And how do I convince them to go?”

“Brentaal, I think. As for why... Well, you’ll just have to tell them that my military schedule is assigning me to Brentaal at the time. It isn’t precisely true, but it should convince them. I’ll meet you at the spaceport, Jag. Okay?”

“Okay Jaina. I’ll see you there.”

~~

“Jag!”

Jag snapped back into the present as Jaina, She’s here, she’s actually here!, strolled up through the crowd. He checked his chrono and sighed in relief. She was precisely on time. He turned on his heel and addressed his parents. “Mother, Father, I’d like you to meet Jaina Solo.”

Jag was both pleased and surprised by his mother’s reaction. “Hello, Jaina. I’m Syal Antilles-Fel. It’s very nice to meet you. I heard from my son that you actually serve under my brother, Wedge. Do you know how he’s doing?”

Jaina smiled. “He’s just fine, Ma’am. He’s gone back into retirement with his wife. They’re very happy. In fact, your niece, Syal, has just entered the Starfighter Command. He’s very proud of her.”

Soontir’s grimace cut out any ground that Jaina had won. “I here you’ve had an... interesting career in the Starfighter Command yourself, young lady.”

Jag grimaced at the implied insults of interesting career, and young lady. If Jag knew Jaina, that would set her off like a thermal detonator on dead-man’s switch.

Surprisingly enough though, Jaina rallied under the insults. “It’s getting quite cold out, Sir. Perhaps we should go indoors and then we continue our discussion.

Soontir nodded briefly and Jaina brought them by speeder to a local residence that she had procured for her stay.

~~

“So, are you going to explain yourself or aren’t you?”

Jag tensed again. The conversation had turned to Jaina’s actions at Hapes. Apparently, Soontir did not approve of her disobedience of the basic tenets by which she had been raised. He stood up in her defence. “Need I remind you, Father, that this occurred almost immediately after the death of her youngest brother. I can name at least one time I acted stupidly because of the death of a sibling.”

Soontir backed off at that comment. After Cherith’s death, Jag had been wildly distraught. He had begun to enter into illegal speeder races in the ice fields of Csilla. In one such race, Jag had crashed and had been grievously injured, and had earned the brutal scar that he wore upon his head. Soontir could no longer question Jaina’s actions at Hapes, without questioning Jag’s reaction to Cherith’s death; a reaction that Soontir truly understood.

Before Soontir could come up with a new angle of attack, Jaina cut in quickly. “Well, I guess it’s time for me to give you the gift I got you, Sir.”

Soontir’s eye reflected his confusion. “I’m sorry?”

“Your gift, Sir. I got you this, in honour of the holiday that is occurring today on Brentaal.” She pulled out a box and handed it to Soontir.

He opened it slowly and carefully, and tears filled his eye as he pulled out a black bantha-hide flight-jacket. On it rode the Rogue Squadron crest, and just below it was inscribed “Impossible is what Rogues do the best. - Wedge Antilles.”

Jaina smiled at Soontir’s reaction. “Wedge was having these made for all the former Rogues. I asked him to have one made one for you too since you were a Rogue once. I told him I’d deliver it personally along with his regards.”

Soontir wiped away the tears and smiled at Jaina... The first smile Jag had seen on his father’s lips in a long time. “This is amazing, Jaina. Just amazing. However, I’ve got to ask... What’s the occasion? I’m not aware of a holiday today.”

Jaina smiled mischievously. “Your memory must be failing you, Sir. It’s Fel’s Day today.”

That earned Jaina a heartfelt laugh from Soontir Fel, as well as a snort of amusement from Syal. Cem and Wyn looked blankly around.

Jaina obligingly filled them in. “Fel’s Day was a holiday created by Lon Isoto in commemoration of Mr. Fel’s valiant defence of Brentaal. It was never taken off the books and so is still an official holiday...”

Soontir looked to Jag in that moment as Jaina explained it all to Wyn and Cem. “You have my blessing, Son. And I’m pretty sure you have your mother’s.”

Jag smiled. “Thank you, Father.” Then he tapped the woman he loved on the shoulder. “Jaina, the gift-giving isn’t over.”

Jaina faced him, confusion filling her eyes. “I wasn’t aware that anyone but me knew this was a holiday...”

Jag gave her a superior grin. “True. And what I have to give you is not exactly a gift.” He dropped down on one knee before her. “Jaina Solo... Will you marry me?”

The gasp from Jaina was not surprising. He just hoped that he hadn’t made a fool of himself in front of his whole family. If Jaina rejected him now, he would never live it down. Wyn wouldn’t let him. Jaina pulled him to his feet. “I was wondering how long you’d take to ask, Fel.” Before he could retort she covered his lips with hers and he forgot all about it. It truly was Fel’s day...

~~

I hope enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it.

That was sweet Barefoot. The idea of giving Soontir the gift on Fel's Day was cute.

Gloria: May I get you permission to save it into Word? Go for it. Thanks for reading.

Chimpo: Uh, for me, Jag giving Jaina the ring is the traditional way. I always was taught the guy asked the woman. And the person who sings that song is a guy wink Didn't think Jaina singing the song when everyone who's heard it would hear the guy's voice would work. Which by the way, that song don't belong to me it belongs to Travis Tritt. I forgot to put the disclaimer on that piece.

laugh Sorry for my laugh but I didn't know what you were talking about but then I understood that you misunderstood my reply. I had on my mind that every story ended with "ring and question" part tongue

And there is no oder tradition that I know too wink

Ahhhh, well, my misunderstanding could be caused it was way too early in the morning for me. My brain don't fuction that properly at 7:30am my time wink tongue

As for me, I had Jag give Jaina a gift. I guess it came from the fact my sister has been (jokingly)telling her boyfriend that she wanted a diamond this year for Christmas.
