Star Wars: Empire #34
Writer: Thomas Andrews
Artist: Adriana Melo
Cover Artist: Tomås Giorello
Letterer: Michael David Thomas
Colorist: Michael Atiyeh

For the second time, events on Jabiim are coming to disastrous ends because of the presence of a Jedi named Skywalker.

The first time was during the Clone Wars when young Anakin Skywalker was forced to abandon the Loyalist Jabiimi troops to the not-so-tender mercies of the Separatists.

Now, Luke Skywalker, whose presence on the otherwise insignificant planet has attracted the attention of none other than Darth Vader, must decide whether to stay and fight and risk everything, or escape and leave the Jabiimi freedom fighters to face Vader's wrath.

But the choice may not be Luke's alone-and no matter what he decides, Vader could end up with another prize that could doom the Rebel fleet!

One day I'll steal your thunder, Derek, and debut a comic issue before you. Just you'll see!

I admit some Empire arcs are getting good, but a young Skywalker isn't anything we haven't seen. And if he could barely reach a saber on Hoth, I think they must be careful how they show his fledging talents, although I hate using "fledging" as a word as it was so synonymous with "New Republic."

Meaning it ends up as a disordered heap.

EDIT: Concidering Luke in most of the NJO... fledging would be the right word!

A pretty good end to the arc, though I wish there was a bit more to their escape at the end.

It did have a pretty great line from Luke though...

Luke: "Ben never mentioned any of this."
Leia: "I'm sure he would have, if you'd had more time together."
Luke: "Would he? What happened on Jabiim must've been an important moment in my father's life. I can't help but wonder...what else did Ben not tell me?"

I agree with T2Q, that whole "Why didn't you tell me?" line from ROTJ can be taken so much deeper now. Instead of being taken on face value as meaning "Why didn't you tell me Vader was my father?" it can now mean that and also "Why didn't you tell me about the man he really was?". I only skimmed the issue so far, but it seems to be alrightish, I'll give further thoughts once I've read it.

I actually rather think it makes Luke's ESB line "Ben...why didn't you tell me..." on teh Falcon ever more emotional and dark than it already is.

Alright... can someone explain me what happened on Jabiim in the first place ??

I just finished the arc but I´m not that familiar with the previous stories so I found myself confused about the feeling of deception it brought me... does it comes from my ignorance or just lousy writing...

There should be summaries in the threads for those issues:

Republic #55: Battle of Jabiim, part 1: Rainmakers

Republic #56: Battle of Jabiim, part 2: Stormchasers

Republic #57: Battle of Jabiim, part 3: Lightning Rods

Republic #58: Battle of Jabiim, part 4: Floodgates

A mediocre ending to an okay arc. The whole thing realy should've been so much better.

However, I look forward to the follow up issue.

A strong conclusion to a solid story arc. I really enjoyed it. My only gripe is how all the characters blame Anakin for Jabiim's downfall. The planet was on the verge of defeat. Even if Anakin had stayed on Jabiim, he would have likely died in the fighting. He wasn't responsible for what happened to them.

It's very easy for a defeated people to blame their downfall on someone in a position of power, which is exactly what the Jabiimi did with Anakin. Of course he wasn't the cause of their fall, but he did leave them, and they did need a scapegoat to blame the whole thing on. Not necessarily right, but understandable.

To be fair to "Ben", since he was undergoing S&M for most of the Battle of Jabiim, there's not a look he could have told Luke.

In fact, are we sure Anakin told Obi-Wan what happened on that world? Hmmm...
