Prologue
[One year prior to the end of the Yuuzhan Vong War]
The old man lay on his pallet, softly mumbling words that could barely be heard as Brosh entered the room. The smell hit him first, the gentle smell of the lichens and harmless molds coating the walls mingling with the overwhelming scent of impending death.
Brosh came closer, listening carefully to the words escaping the old man’s blue lips. He was reciting the history again. Brosh had learned it by heart long ago—before he could train, before he could barely understand the power he held in his hands. Brosh had learned this history well. Arisya could spiel it off at will and often did when she was concentrating on a task.
“And then,” the old man coughed, “came Palpatine, Darth Sidious, who trained Darth Maul.”
“Who fell to Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Brosh continued, squatting down by the pallet, his blue eyes meeting the yellow gaze of his master. “And then came Darth Tyrannus, who also fell, and Darth Vader, who had been Anakin Skywalker, the Chosen One of the Jedi.” The Jedi would have been surprised at the amount of their lost history wrapped up in the litany of the Sith Lords.
“But knowing that his three apprentices had failed, Sidious determined that another was needed and Darth Eton became master of the Sith upon his death,” his master wheezed. “Has Arisya learned the history? Has she been trained in the next part?”
“She has, my master,” Brosh replied. “And when Darth Eton had passed, his apprentice, Darth Teron, became the master and took his own apprentice, Arisya, Darth Serani.”
“Good,” his master said, gracing his apprentice with a smile that for once was not gloating in Brosh’s pain. “And has she learned the lessons of our history? Patience, moderation, vigilance and action?” He levered himself up. “Has she learned the lessons of our history? Tell me, Brosh.”
“Yes, Master,” Brosh said. “I have passed on all your teachings to her.” He reached out an arm to help his master sit up and lean against the wall.
“You are brash, my apprentice,” the old man said. “Remember, the heritage of the Sith is far more important than power, Brosh. Too often, power allures, and destroys, as it did Sidious.”
“I understand, Master,” Brosh said.
The old man met his gaze once more, but Brosh had learned long ago that the secret to lying was wrapped up in two things—keeping eye contact, and hiding the fact that you were lying even from yourself. “It is time then,” his master said.
Brosh nodded, pulling his lightsaber from his belt as he stood. The burgundy blade illuminated the room in the color of blood and he swept it down in a salute to his former master.
The old man sat calmly. This was the way it was. This was the way it would be.
Filling himself with the Force, Brosh let his anger and fury flow through him, every bit of hate he felt towards this man who had raised him and put him through so much, rage through his veins.
The lightsaber hummed through the air, barely striking the old man. The blast of blue fire exploded in Brosh’s face, and he stepped backwards from the force of it, shielding himself from the heat and absorbing what he could until nothing was left.
Arisya was waiting for him when he left the room. “It is done, then.”
Brosh nodded, gently pushing a strand of the woman’s short hair from her eyes. “It is done.”
Barely concealed hatred flew across her face. “Good.”
His blue eyes met the gaze of her green, and she could see every emotion going through him, anger, hate, ambition, passion—lust.
He looked away, his eyes tracking along the walls. “We have work to do.”
She bowed her head, quelling the resentment from the orders coming from a man barely five years her senior, crystallizing it for when she needed it. “Yes, my master.”

*does a little dance* Go Carrrr go carrrr go go go carrrrr.
I'm here. I saw Han's name. That's all it takes. Don't kill him or else.
Beyond that, it's looking good so far. Like a real book. Hee. I can't ever do that. I get too impatient with all the other characters and just go back to Han and Leia.

“And has she learned the lessons of our history? Patience, moderation, vigilance and action?”
– Excellent!
Passion and lust in his eyes? Does Brosh use his position to force…
favours
from his apprentice?
I’m looking forward to more!

Ire
, Thank you, dear! Creepy was what I was going for, and I’m glad you think it’s realistic (I was hoping that the premise was). They are real Sith—so they necessarily have to be more violent than the typical Dark Jedi they’ve run into through the years.
Arin

Idrelle

Chapter 1.1
[Three years after the end of the Yuuzhan Vong War]
The Great Ocean
Mon Calamari
Capital, Galactic Alliance
Beep. Beep.
Jaina Solo lifted her head and opened her eyes against the sun shining down on the three beachgoers who had claimed this particular stretch of artificial sand. “Tell me that isn’t my comlink.”
“It isn’t your comlink,” her brother said, putting his arms behind his head, stalwartly ignoring the continuing beeping of the item Jaina was looking for.
“Yes, it is,” she said, her voice muffled as she leaned over the bag. The warm day had been meant to be a slight respite from the everyday hassles of being the protectors of the galaxy. Hunting through the bag she’d brought, she threw a towel on top of Jagged Fel’s face, finally finding the comlink under the other things she’d haphazardly tumbled into the bag.
She took one long look at the comlink, and threw it into the vast Mon Calamari ocean as hard as she could.
“There’s a way to stay out of contact,” Jag said, putting a hand up to his eyes to avoid the glare as he looked out over the ocean. “Suppose it was anything important?”
She laid back down, rolling over to allow the sun access to her bare abdomen. “Today is our vacation,” she said firmly. “Between the Jedi and the reserves, I’ve not had a day off in nearly six months, and I am going to sit here on this beach for the rest of the day, because I deserve at least twenty-four hours of rest.”
“I absolutely agree,” Jacen said from her other side as he reached for his bottle of synthale. He’d had little more time to himself than she had, and on this extremely rare occasion, they’d managed to be free at the same time. Being the Chiss envoy had given Jag a fair amount of control over his own schedule, and he’d suggested they take the day away from the hustle and bustle of the capital and come out here to the beach. Jaina and Jacen had unanimously decided that it was the best idea he’d had in months.
Beep. Beep.
Jaina shot up, destruction in her eyes towards the offending comlink that Jag pulled from the pile where he’d dropped his shirt. “How much do you want to bet this is for you?” he asked her.
The comlink left his hand as Jaina grabbed it and threw it into the ocean to follow hers. Jag apparently thought better of saying whatever had been about to leave his mouth and laid back down on his towel.
Jacen, however, lacked the filter between his brain and his mouth. “You know, every time you do that, you kill a fish. Then you kill the fish that would have eaten that fish, and the fish that would have killed that fish. Congratulations, Jaina, you’ve just destroyed the entire marine ecosystem of Mon Calamari.”
“If you are that concerned about it,” Jaina said, “then you are entirely welcome to go get it.” She twisted to lie on her stomach again and allow the sun access to her back. “You’re going to burn, Jag.”
“Never fails,” he said unconcernedly. “Part of growing up on a world covered in ice.”
Jacen shivered. “Jaina, remind me to thank our parents for raising on temperate worlds.”
She stifled her laugh, turning her head to look at Jag, who smiled back at her.
Beep. Beep.
She turned her head to look at Jacen, who raised his head. “You have to be kidding me.”
“You are not killing another fish with my comlink,” he said, handing it to her.
“Jaina Solo,” she said in defeat. “What, for Force’s sake, could you possibly want right now?”
“Good afternoon to you, Goddess,” Kyp Durron’s amused voice said. “I thought I’d never get a hold of you.”
“I wonder why,” Jag said dryly.
“Don’t call me Goddess,” she said, the snap in her tone evidencing her irritation. “What have you interrupted my afternoon for?”
“The Council respectfully requests your presence,” Kyp said. “Sorry. I tried to get them to wait until tomorrow, but they decided otherwise.”
She sighed, dropped her head. “Figures. All right, I’ll be along presently.”
“Take your time,” Kyp said. “They can wait.”
Jaina had to keep from laughing as she clicked the comlink off. “So much for a vacation.”
Jag extended a hand to help her to her feet as Jacen gathered up the towels they’d been lying on. “Too bad, though.”
A low rumble in the air caused her to look up. “Too bad, whatever,” Jaina said, squinting to see the massive vessel crossing the sky. “Her Majesty, the Queen Mother is back.”
Jacen’s head snapped up to look at the sky, trying to make out the image of a Hapan Battle Dragon in the blur rapidly coming in for a landing. “She must be back for the Council meeting tomorrow. I’ll have to go pay my respects.”
Jaina fixed him with a look that left no doubt as to her thoughts on the issue, and even Jag was trying to keep from laughing.
Ignoring her brother for a moment, Jaina reached down to touch the water for a moment with one last wistful sigh. “Well, that’s it then. Let’s go to work.”
***
“Colonel Solo,” Kyp said by way of greeting her as she entered the Senate building. “Glad you could make it.”
At least Colonel Solo was better than Goddess, a term he’d never quite managed to quit using. “Not like I had much choice,” she said, tugging on the hem of the shirt she’d found on top of her clean laundry. “What crisis is it this time?”
Kyp’s jaw worked a bit. “Something that could definitely have waited until tomorrow unless they aren’t telling me something, which is entirely possible.”
She smiled gratefully at him. “At least you tried. Better than I’m getting from my family, three of whom are in that room.
“Four,” Kyp corrected. “Han’s been giving his report. Should have brought a holocam—you could have captured that look of discomfort and disgust for all eternity.”
“No need,” Jaina said. “I’ve seen it enough. Is the Queen Mother here yet?”
Kyp shook his head. “Unfortunately, no. As soon as they talk to you, they’re recessing for the day. She’ll be here tomorrow, and you’ll be on your way to a tiny little backwater world mediating disputes.”
She stopped in her tracks. “What?”
“With a twist, at least,” he said. “One of the factions hates Jedi.”
“That’s it? That’s what they called me back for? Another brushfire?” The volume of her voice raised as they approached the Council chamber. “They called me back to mediate a dispute when I haven’t had a single day’s break in nearly six months?”
“And we are extremely sorry for that, Master Jedi,” Cal Omas’ smooth voice said, the door to the Council chamber opening. “Please, come in.”
Biting her tongue, Jaina entered the room to find out exactly what they wanted now.

Chapter 1.2
The Senate Building
Mon Calamari
Capital, Galactic Alliance
Into the den of vipers
, Jaina thought, entering the room. Her mother offered her a tight smile, and Jaina knew she wasn’t very happy with this. Her father gave her a lopsided grin to bolster her up.
“Our apologies for recalling you, Master Jedi,” Omas said, taking his seat across the room and Jaina stepped into the circle the table made.
She pressed her lips together in frustration. “Your Excellency, I want you to know how strongly I protest this. You would not dream of sending anyone in your military out like I have been without sufficient rest.”
“And we are extremely sorry, Your Grace,” Omas answered. “However, this situation requires immediate attention, and we feel you are the best person for the job.”
There wasn’t any arguing with that, and she’d come very closet to being entirely rude to the chief of state of nearly the entire galaxy. She gritted her teeth and took a deep breath to diffuse her irritation. Suddenly very tired, she said, “What do you want done?”
There was no missing the small burst of triumph coming from him. “Councilor Triebakk, Master Skywalker?”
The Wookiee roared a comment, pulling up a display, and Luke stood and not for the first time, Jaina wished her aunt would deliver a blow to the back of his head. Mara Jade Skywalker winked at her, apparently picking up on that thought.
“This is Orchact,” Luke said. “A small planet near Corellia. Two factions are warring over water rights—the planet is nearly completely land and the best source of water is this sea.” The image rotated, showing a large sea. “It’s the only natural source of freshwater on the planet—easier to use and less expensive than moisture vaporators, desalination or having water shipped in.”
Triebakk shut the image off. “The problem,” Mara said,” is that one of the factions laying claim to this sea hates Jedi.”
“We’re not sending in non-Jedi mediators instead?” Jaina asked.
“There’s a possibility that the anti-Jedi sentiment isn’t just there,” her mother said. “We need to find out if it’s being deliberately stirred up.”
“We’d like for you to leave tonight,” Omas said. “This needs resolved as soon as possible.”
“I understand,” she said—although she didn’t truly understand. Obviously, war being averted was a good thing, but it was a tiny planet.
A tiny planet that could become a large political liability as elections approached. “If that’s all, you and General Solo are dismissed,” Omas said, and bowing deeply, Jaina left the room.
Han leaned over as the door closed. “You ever see such a group of blowhards in your life?”
“Could be worse,” she shrugged. “Fey’lya could still be in charge.”
“Well, your uncle and I are going to have words if this goes on much longer,” Han said, loosening the collar to his dress uniform. “I hate this thing.”
“If I’d known that this was being Sword of the Jedi meant, I’d have turned down the job,” she said grimly, holding out her hands to carry the medals Han was rapidly detaching from the uniform jacket.
“Sweated so much in that Council chamber that I’m going to have to have this cleaned,” he said.
“Putting the heat on, were they?” Jaina asked.
“You’d think a home force update wouldn’t require live weapons fire,” he said and handed Jaina the last medal. “At least your mother warned me.”
“What’s wrong with them now?” Jaina asked.
“The Yuuzhan Vong ambassador is arriving in the morning,” Han said. “Want to make sure that all the security measures are in place, just in case they’re thinking about trying something.”
“Considering the attack two years ago, it’s no wonder,” Jaina said. “Do they honestly think you’d let that happen?”
They passed the guard at the door, exiting the corridor leading from the Council chambers into one of the main thoroughfares of the Senate building. “I don’t know,” Han said with a sigh. “I guess this ruins you and Jag coming for dinner tonight. At least Jacen will be there.”
“Not likely,” Jaina said. “Tenel Ka is back.”
Han rolled his eyes. “I hope he knows what he’s getting into.”
She sighed. “When I get back, I’m losing my comlink and going into hiding for a week.”
“Maybe I’ll go with you,” her father said.
“You’ll have to, I’m stealing the
Falcon
when I do,” she said.
“Please be careful,” Han said, stopping at the exit to the building and taking his medals back from Jaina.
“I will,” she promised with a smile.
“That’s my girl,” he said, giving her a hug. “Come see your old man when you get back, even if you have to Council to go to hell.”
“I may just do that,” she said. He smiled at her again before leaving to head back towards his office at the base.
She continued down the thoroughfare towards the diplomatic offices. The Chiss embassy was nearly finished and Jag would move his office there when it was complete, but for now he was only a few corridors away.
She said hi to a few people of her acquaintance before finally making it to Jag’s office, past the blue-skinned guards standing ramrod-straight at the entrance to the Chiss embassy suite. Shawnkyr Nuruodo was standing in the antechamber to Jag’s office. “Colonel Solo.”
“Major,” Jaina said. “Is he busy?”
“No, please enter,” the woman said, her eerie red glowing eyes fixed on Jaina. “I believe he was waiting for you.”
Jaina knocked on the door and entered at his “Come in!”
“That was fast,” he said in surprise as she entered the office.
“It was a really quick meeting,” she said, flopping down in one of the chairs in front of his desk and propping a foot up on the edge of it.
“What happened?” he asked, sitting down on the top of the desk by her feet.
“I’m going to Orchact,” she answered. “Tonight.”
He frowned. “Tonight?”
She nodded. “Want to go?”
The curious look on his face stopped her—she’d intended the comment to be a sarcastic one, but he was taking it at face value. “I could. Shawnkyr is more than capable of handling things here.”
“You’re serious?” she said. “You want to go and argue with belligerent people for a while?”
“Not any different than anything I’m doing here, and it if means spending time with you, I’d sit in a Hutt’s shadow,” he said and she remembered that he’d been just as deprived of her presence as she had been his. “When are you leaving?”
She checked her chronometer. “About four hours.”
“You taking the X-wing or the
Star’s Run
?”
“
Star’s Run
. I don’t want to sit in an X-wing for two days,” she said, getting up. “It you want to take your clawcraft, you’ll have to get it moved to the hold with my X-wing.”
“I’ll make arrangements,” he said, leaning down to kiss her. “See you then.”
She smiled, leaving the office as Jag quickly spoke to Shawnkyr. Suddenly, the idea of this trip didn’t seem so bad after all.
