An Original Romance

Part I

“Hey, will you hold still, already?”

“Sorry.” Leiraya tried once more not to squirm in her chair as Mission Vao attempted to sculpt her long chestnut hair into something sufficiently formal-looking. “Just nervous, I guess.”

Just nervous, she snorted inwardly. If this is what every bride goes through before her wedding, it’s a wonder anyone ever gets married. Five hours to the ceremony, and she was a nervous wreck. It wasn’t that she doubted her choice for a moment- it had been two years since the destruction of the Star Forge, and the decision had hardly been rushed. There were, however, certain complications that arose from the whole affair.

First, and probably most importantly, was the matter of her parents. Jedi on Corellia were permitted to marry, unlike the rest of the Order. Corellians, however, were notoriously xenophobic. She hadn’t gotten the best reaction from her parents, or anyone else for that matter, when she brought home an off-worlder, an ekster. The fact that he was a hero of the Republic didn’t seem to make much of a difference. She’d endured shaking heads and disapproving glares the whole time she’d been home. If I needed that, she thought, I’d have stayed on Dantooine with Vrook and discussed my ‘wicker basket weaving classes.’ Needless to say, when she’d sent invitations to the wedding, none of her family had replied.

She couldn’t help but feel she was letting them down. All her life, it had been rather assumed that she would stay on Corellia, like everyone else in her family, marry a decent Corellian, and then go on to take over the family farm. The Moran family ran one of the largest organic farms on Corellia, and she had always been around to help run things. Everyone expected her to take over things when she had completed her Jedi training, especially given her known dislike for fighting.

Then again, she had never been overly enamoured with everyone else deciding what her future ought to be.

Smelling something odd, she made a conscious effort to not move her head. “Mission, are you trying to curl my hair or cook it?”

“Oops.” The twi'lek released the curling iron, and examined the locks of hair. “Looks okay to me…”

Leiraya examined the progress in the mirror. Approximately half her hair was curled and precariously pinned in various places atop her head. The rest was in varying stages of being curled, and Mission was trying her hardest to get it all up into something that looked relatively nice. For the most part, she was succeeding, though it was taking a large amount of effort.

Fiddling with the white Corellian roses that would eventually adorn the hairstyle, she tried not to think about the disapproval she was facing. Mission tugged on her hair a bit longer, sighed, and said, “You know, you have way too much hair. How do you deal with it all?”

Leiraya shrugged. “It’s not so bad once you’re used to it.”

“Well, it’s sure not all going on top of your head. You mind if half of it is down?”

“As long as it looks good, I’ll let you do whatever you want, Mission.”

Mission frowned. “Is something bothering you?”

“Oh… it’s nothing.”

Mission put her hand on her hip and cocked her head to one side. “Yeah, and I’m a Gizka trainer. What’s up?”

“It’s… it’s my family.” She shook her head. “I don’t think they’re coming.”

“You mean, they’d just skip the whole thing?” Mission looked slightly bewildered. “Why would your parents not show up?”

Leiraya laughed somewhat bitterly. “Because I’m not marrying a Corellian. Because I won’t be taking over the farm.” Because they think I’m a failure as a daughter.

“Well, that’s a stupid reason. Wow… you have to get married without your family there? I mean, if I ever did, my parents are dead, so they wouldn’t come, but your parents are alive. And then there’s Griff, but you know Griff…”

Leiraya closed her eyes, trying not to think of how upset she was. Finally, something inside her snapped. “I’ll be right back.”

Mission had to swing the curling iron out of the way so that Leiraya didn’t run into it on her way out of the chair. “Whoa, where are you going?”

“I’m going to go have a little chat with Carth.”

“Hey, you can’t see each other before the wedding- it’s bad luck!”

Sighing, Leiraya paused and turned to face Mission. “When we met, he thought I was an intruder and almost shot me. We were subsequently shoved into multiple battles against superior numbers, and ended up locked in the Ebon Hawk by the former leader of our mission- you do remember all this, correct?”

“Well, yeah.”

“There are few things a little bit of bad luck could do to make our record worse.”

“Uhh…” Mission paused. “I guess you have a point.”

Without further ado, Leiraya strode through the doorway, half-pinned curls tumbling out of place and still in her pyjamas. She made her way quickly to Carth’s room and was about to knock on the door when she heard his voice at the other end of the hallway. “Leiraya- what are you doing here?”

She whirled around, causing yet another clump of curls to fall out of place. “We have to talk- about my parents.”

Carth started to open his mouth to reply, but Leiraya cut him short. “I know this seems like a horrible thing to do- but I want my parents to be here when I get married. I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, don’t ever doubt that. But it means a lot to me to have them here.” She paused to catch her breath. “I… I hope you can understand that.”

She looked into his eyes, and where she expected to see worry, hurt, or annoyance, she saw a twinkling of amusement. Narrowing her eyes slightly, she asked, “What’s going on?”

Carth shrugged easily and turned the corner of his mouth into a wry grin. “Well, I saw how you moped when you didn’t get any response from your parents.”

“I did not mope.”

“You moped.” He grinned. “And I couldn’t have a moping bride, now could I?”

“I was so completely not moping.”

“Yes, you were. I love you, but you were definitely moping. So I decided to do something about it.”

“Will you stop-" she paused. “What did you do?”

Just then, a door at the other end of the hallway opened up, and Leiraya heard the voice of Canderous Ordo. “Come on, it’s not going to kill you… at least, not as fast as I might if you don’t move.” He looked up and saw Leiraya and Carth standing in the hall. “Well, just the people I was looking for. I have a package to deliver.” Two rather discontent individuals looked sourly at the Mandalorian, he merely poked them with his repeating blaster for effect. “Come on, I said I’d get you here in one piece, don’t blow it now.”

Leiraya’s eyes went wide. “Mom… Dad?”

Her mother looked flustered. “Yes, we came. This, er… gentleman escorted us.”

She looked at her parents, then looked back at Carth. “I can’t believe you sent Canderous for them.”

“I didn’t send him, I merely mentioned it and he volunteered.” He grinned. “The net effect was the same, though.”

“I don’t know who I should hug first.” She turned back to her parents. “I… I didn’t think you were coming.”

Her father frowned. “We weren’t going to. I’m still not overly happy with the arrangement. And to be so brutishly forced into travel…”

“Now, dear, she is your only daughter, and she is getting married.” Leiraya’s mother tried to placate him.

“Only daughter or no, she’s marrying an off-worlder.” He harrumphed. “Never thought I’d see it in the Moran family.”

“I, ah…” Leiraya fumbled for something to say. “Do you want to go some place to rest?”

“Any place is better than standing here,” her father huffed.

Her mother looked annoyed by his behaviour. “I would like to find some place to sit… do you need help with getting ready?”

Leiraya looked up at the curls that were tumbling into her eyes and half-grinned. “I think that would be most useful.”

“I’ll show this gentleman to his room,” Canderous said, again poking him with the repeating blaster. “Follow me, I don’t want to see any funny business.”

As they rounded the bend, Leiraya let off a huge sigh. “Maybe I didn’t need this.”

Very good. Interesting story so far happy

“You know, you have way too much hair. How do you deal with it all?”

Just commenting on that part because it sounds very familiar. I hear that quite a bit, mostly from people I don't know. My hair is very long, although that probably goes without saying now wink

“Yeah, and I’m a Gizka trainer. What’s up?”

Gizka trainer, huh? raised_brow grin

Was that for my benefit, or just a coincidence?

Okay, okay. I know that's unrelated, wink but I forgot to mention how cool that was last time.

Part II

Ti’ana Moran had never been one to let herself be bossed around. However, when a Mandalorian shows up on one’s doorstep with a repeating blaster rifle, one often finds that it’s much more simple to comply. The fact that it was her daughter’s wedding that was the reason for the forced travel made it slightly more palatable. She had never been as vehemently opposed to the union as her husband, though a lifetime of living on Corellia had conditioned her with much the same beliefs as the next person as far as off-worlders were concerned. She had to keep telling herself that they had raised their daughter to think for herself- a necessary trait for any Corellian Jedi worth her salt. She had always known that such free-thinking would eventually lead her daughter into a decision she did not understand.

She hadn’t expected her daughter to marry this decision.

She was, however, coming to terms with it. This Carth Onasi fellow seemed to be a decent sort of gentleman, a ‘hero of the Republic,’ if news sources were to believed. And anyone who cared enough to send a Mandalorian after his bride’s parents when they refused an invitation to the wedding, and not just to knock them off… well, it showed a unique sort of affection, if nothing else.

Ti’ana now stood behind her daughter, trying to work her hair into an appropriate style. The young twi’lek, apparently, was responsible for the mess of pins that had been the first hairstyle, but she had gladly relinquished the hair station to the more experienced person.

Leiraya had been silent for several minutes. Finally, she found the courage to speak. “Did you guys really hate him that much?”

“Of course not,” she immediately replied, but the hurt and somewhat betrayed tone of Leiraya’s voice felt like a kick to the stomach. “He’s just… not what we expected.”

“And for that, you almost wouldn’t come?” Leiraya laughed bitterly. “It took a Mandalorian warrior at your doorstep to convince you my wedding was worth coming to.”

“Well, you could’ve thought of having it on Corellia.”

“Don’t you think I did? Mom, I wanted to be married on Corellia. More than just about anything. But do you think anyone there would have taken it?” Leiraya shook her head. “It would have been a disaster, and you know it. I could barely have him on the planet without him getting dirty looks, forget a wedding ceremony.”

Leiraya was right, of course, and Ti’ana knew it. Guilt had been gnawing at her since her husband had declared that they would not, in fact, be attending the wedding. The least they could have done, she thought, was send some sort of letter of excuse. Davin would have none of it, though. He had never quite disowned Leiraya, but he wasn’t far from it. It had never settled well with her, and seeing her daughter in such a state on what was supposed to be a joyful day was shattering several of the walls she had set up over the years.

Twisting the last few locks into place, and letting the curls cascade artfully down her back, Ti’ana saw the tiny Corellian roses sitting on the table.

“Ahh, Corellian roses. A truly unique flower.”

“Don’t change the subject, Mom.”

“I don’t think I am. Flowers can teach a lot, more than you might think.”

“Are you going to offer some sort of excuse based on flowers? Because I’m not seeing the connection.”

Ti’ana shook her head. “No, I think I’m the one learning the lesson today.” She picked up one of the flowers. “I imagine you chose these because they’re the only Corellian flower you could find.”

“I… yeah.” Leiraya turned around and raised an eyebrow skeptically. “How did you know that?”

“You never did share my passion for the floral life of Corellia.” Ti’ana smiled. “Corellian roses, while an uncommon flower on their homeworld, are the only uniquely Corellian flower that can be transplanted to other worlds. This is even an anomaly among most roses, as they seem to like to stay in their home soil. Alderaanian flame roses, for instance, have never been successfully planted anywhere else in the galaxy.”

“Okay… so what are we learning from this?”

“The fact that something we as Corellians hold dear has been taken somewhere else does not diminish its beauty.” She closed her eyes, trying to hold back the tears. “We’ve always wanted what’s best for you, but we’ve been stupid to think that we know better than you do now that you’re grown. You’ve blossomed into a beautiful Corellian rose, and I’m so proud of you.”

“Oh, Mom…” Leiraya stood up and pulled her mother into an embrace. Suddenly, the situation didn’t seem quite so dire. She was sure her father wasn’t going to be so easily convinced, but she would take what small victories she could. “I’m just glad you’re here.”

“And I’m glad that brutish Mandalorian forced us to come.” Ti’ana brushed stray tears from her cheeks and smiled. “I don’t know how you get along with such different people, but it must be interesting.”

“Interesting is one word for it.” She checked her chrono, there were three hours left until the ceremony. “I should probably think about getting into that dress.”

Ti’ana moved over to the hanger that held the flowing white gown, made of the finest Corellian silk available on Coruscant. “Oh, it’s beautiful.”

Mission, who had been sitting in a corner trying to remain inconspicuous, grinned. “Wait until you see it on her.”

Ti’ana returned the grin. “I’m very excited to. But first, I think I ought to have a talk with your father.”

“Good luck with that,” Leiraya sighed. “Personally, I’d rather face the full defenses of the Star Forge again.”

“Oh, I have my ways, believe me.” She winked and walked out the door.

Leiraya could only stare at the door where she had left for a moment. “Why do I have a feeling Dad doesn’t know what’s about to hit him?”

Mission, on the other hand, was still mulling over the flower comparison. “You know, she and Jolee should talk sometime…”

* * *

Davin Moran, much as he would never admit it, was getting cantankerous in his old age. He had not been happy when the Mandalorian had announced he was there to take him to his own daughter’s wedding- as if he needed an escort- but he had come anyway. Probably had something to do with the guns.

In any case, he had been in an ill humour when they left Corellia, and the Mandalorian’s attempts to unnerve him with war stories had only served to make him even more annoyed. To think his daughter had been associating with such people, all while on a mission for the Jedi. He knew the mainstream Jedi were bad news, Leiraya’s newfound associations were merely reinforcement of that belief. Hero or no, this Carth person was no Corellian, and he certainly wasn’t going to help her run any farms.

Why did he have to be the one with the rebellious child?

“Davin, I’ve got words for you.” The door had whirred open, revealing Ti’ana. “I know you’re not a fan of this wedding, but I think you’ve got your head on backwards.”

“Do I, now?” Davin crossed his arms. “And what makes you say that?”

“We raised her to be like this, you know. To think for herself.”

“Yeah, but she’s supposed to think the right way, not in this crazy manner!”

“And what, exactly, is so crazy about falling in love?”

Davin looked at her in disbelief. “I don’t believe this. You’re taking her side! Whatever happened to solidarity?”

“You know I thought it was a bad idea to skip the wedding entirely.” Ti’ana waved her finger in his face. “It’s your bad attitude that landed that Mandalorian on our doorstep.”

“No, it’s her flaming ahrotahntee fiancé that did that. What kind of respectable person would send a Mandalorian warrior to his future parents-in-law?”

“You didn’t even give him a chance, you… you heartless shoikler.”

Davin arched his brows. “Shoikler, am I? Well, why didn’t you say anything, eh? I didn’t see you immediately hopping to your beloved daughter’s defense.”

“Even if I’d said something, would you have listened? I know how you can get.”

“Of course I would!” He huffed. “And then I’d set your head on straight.”

Ti’ana’s eyes narrowed. “You’re going to that ceremony. And you’re going to tell her you love her, and you’re not going to give her a hard time about it. She is thirty standard years old, and she is perfectly capable of making this sort of decision without any unnecessary input.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then you are going to be a very lonely old man for a while, since I’d like to get to know my new family members.” She crossed her arms. “And I don’t need an ill-tempered bahro such as yourself spoiling things.”

“First I’m a shoikler, now I’m an ill-tempered bahro?” Davin shook his head and stood silently for a minute, looking as though he was trying to come up with some sort of witty reply. Failing this, he finally spoke. “All right, I’ll go. And I won’t complain. But I won’t like it.”

Ti’ana smiled. “You don’t have to like it. Not yet, anyway. For now, you just have to be her dad.”

Davin sighed. “I’m getting old. My little girl’s getting married.”

“That’s right. And you almost missed it.”

“Yeah, rub it in, why don’t you?” Davin scratched his head and looked around the room. “Do they have any food here?”

Shame on Daddy. shame_on_you

That's his little girl and he wasn't going to come? I wouldn't be surprised if that Mandalorian had accidently shot him on the way there.

I thought this was a unique twist on the challenge. Having it have to do with the marriage tradition was neat.

Will we get to see the wedding? I love weddings. My brother just got married last Saturday.

Let me know if this continues. I don't get to this board that often.

Thanks.

Oh and nice job.

Lola64: Well, you'll see how it plays out, won't you? wink Actually, you really won't be in suspense for all that long, seeing as I'm posting the last part. So I'll give you a... sort of. happy

And here's the final installment for your reading enjoyment!

Part III

The ceremony had gone off without a hitch.

The holojournalists had been present, of course. Far be it for them to miss a “celebrity” wedding, and seeing the heroes of the Republic living “happily ever after” was good PR for the government, too. Canderous was able to discourage most of them from getting too curious, though, and the poor sap who mistook Jolee for some random old man turned out to be the most well-behaved of the journalists present. It was probably in no small part due to Jolee taking him through a complete metaphorical narrative of the adventure in his unique cantankerous style of the entire Star Forge quest. This narrative, coupled with the waving of a deactivated lightsaber in close proximity, served to keep the journalist on his best behaviour.

Friends and family from all over the galaxy were present, and even Leiraya’s father thought it was a nice ceremony, at the end of it. Afterwards, everyone migrated two floors down to the reception room, where they had dinner followed by dancing. Carth and Leiraya started alone at first, then other couples slowly started to join. Leiraya saw Mission drag a rather bewildered Dustil out on to the dance floor with her, and she couldn’t help but smile. The kid needed to loosen up sometimes, and Mission was the perfect person to help out with that.

“So,” Carth grinned, leading Leiraya around the dance floor, “How does it feel to be an Onasi?”

“Well, it feels approximately the same as being a Moran, at least since I got to know you.” She paused. “Except for that first little bit, where I didn’t know if you were going to shoot me or not.”

“I told you I wasn’t really going to blast you,” he groaned. “Besides, you were busy waving a spoon in my face.”

“Yeah, you should be afraid of that spoon,” she smirked.

“You still haven’t shown me what you can do with that spoon, you know…”

A deep voice suddenly came up behind them. “Mind if I, er… cut in?”

They looked up, and were somewhat surprised to see Davin Moran. “Uhh, certainly, sir.” Carth relinquished his bride to his now father-in-law.

“Thanks,” he said gruffly, leading Leiraya in the next steps of the dance as Carth made his way to the punch bowl. They danced in silence for a couple of minutes, until Davin finally broke the silence. “Well, it wasn’t awful.”

It was a backhanded compliment, but one that Leiraya was willing to accept. “I’m glad to see you didn’t have an absolutely abysmal time.”

“Nah, the food was good, so I can’t complain too much.” He paused. “So, this Carth… he’s going to take care of you?”

Leiraya had expected to hear suspicion, bitterness, or contempt in his voice, but she heard genuine concern in its place. “Oh, Dad, of course he is.” She smiled. “He’s got a lot to live up to, though.”

“Darn straight, he does,” Davin muttered, slightly embarrassed. “I… I just want to see you happy, okay?”

Her eyes sparkled. “Dad, you’re looking at happy.”

Davin looked down at her, she was as radiant as he had ever seen her. There was still a large chunk of him that resented the fact that she had chosen to marry an offworlder, but even as he thought this, he remembered a song that Leiraya used to sing when she was younger. She’d be out in the fields, pulling up weeds, or just outside reading or playing, and she had one song she particularly loved. He closed his eyes as the memory of her slightly more child-like voice floated through his memory.

Let it go, let it go
This is smaller than you know
It’s no bigger than a pebble lying on a gravel road
Let it go, let it go
Gotta leave it all behind you
Give the sun a chance to find you
Let it go

Looking around, he could see how much fun everyone was having, the celebration that it was meant to be. Ti’ana had been right, he was being a heartless shoikler. However, he was not above revising his opinions.

“Sweetheart… if he makes you happy, then that’s… that’s all I need to know.”

Carth chose that moment to come back with one of his military friends. “Leiraya? Mr. Moran?” He gestured towards his friend and grinned. “This is one of my old pals, Lieutenant Grenn. He’s working on Telos Citadel Station these days, helping run the Restoration Project.”

“Pleased to meet you,” Leiraya smiled, and Davin nodded politely.

“I thought I’d tell you this while you had your father here- I think he’d be pleased. Grenn?”

Lieutenant Grenn, a slightly older man who smiled like he was years younger, nodded and spoke. “I understand you come from a background of organic farming, Mrs. Onasi?”

She looked up at her dad, then back at Grenn. “Yes, yes I do.”

“Well, as a part of the Restoration Project, we’d like to make use of your skills.” He straightened his collar. “The Ithorians are heavily assisting us in our efforts, and they have expressed a desire to start an orchard or a farm, but they lack the resources to start it on their own. Would you be willing to run an organic farm on the surface of Telos?”

She looked from Grenn, to Carth, to her father and back, slack-jawed. “I... I’d love to! That would be incredible!”

Carth drew her close to him and smiled. “I thought you might say as much.”

“An orchard, do you say?” Davin mulled over this for a second. “I think your mother and I might be able to get you some supplies and seeds.” He paused. “That is, if you promise to uphold the quality of the Morans,” he added almost severely.

Leiraya grinned so broadly she thought her face might break in two. “You know I’d never do anything else.”

“Well, then that settles it.” Grenn bowed and smiled at the lot of them. “Consider it done.” He took his leave of them, mingling with the rest of the crowd.

“I don’t know where you got the idea to do that, but I’m so glad you did.”

Carth shrugged and grinned easily. “My gift to you- you already gave me more than I ever thought I’d have again in my life.”

“And that’s my cue to leave,” Davin said gruffly. “I’ll talk to you two later about how to properly run a farm…” he ambled off, muttering something about seasonal fruits and proper care of gardening tools.

“You know, your dad is a strange, strange man.” Carth shook his head. “I think I kinda like him.”

Awwwww. I just loved it.

I'm glad daddy came to his senses. And Carth? I want one. love He doesn't happen to have a twin brother, does he?

She gets him and the farm? Some girls have all the luck.

Great little story DHW. Good luck in the voting this week.

I loved this! You did a fantastic job blending humor in with a very touching story. Having a Mandalorian escort her father to her wedding at gun point is priceless. I also like how you characterized her mother.

Lola64: Thanks! happy Glad you enjoyed the final installment. And no, he doesn't have a twin brother, though he's really not quite as charming when you first meet him. That's okay, he improves upon acquaintence. tongue

oqidaun: Well, thanks. grin I must confess the whole "escort" bit is my favourite part of the story... it was too priceless to pass up once the idea hit. tongue

Aiden_Sanic: Again, thank you! I'm glad you enjoy my stuff. happy

Well, the suspense should be over soon, and I wish each one of you good luck in the voting. grin
