NJO in Star Wars Insider #57 (spoilers)
I luvs my
Star Wars Insider
.
I just got the latest issue, and there's some really great stuff in here. Besides the usual prequel updates and news and interviews and whatnot, there are not one, but
two
articles on the New Jedi Order. One of them is a very interesting interview with NJO editor Shelly Shapiro, which also includes a sidebar with an overview for next year's books:
What's Ahead for the New Jedi Order in 2002?
(It goes on to say, in different colored letters, "oh, just the end of the New Republic." Well, that's just about as confirmed as something gets.
)
The other NJO article is the
really
good one:
Who's Who in the New Jedi Order
(it's by Dan Wallace). It features a brief overview of the entire NJO saga to-date, from VP to SbS (and it does include SbS spoilers), plus a quick look at the Vong and the Jedi. But the best part is the close-up look at 48 of the Jedi Knights who have thus far played a role in the book. Each character has a brief summary devoted to him or her, plus a black-and-white portrait. The characters listed are as follows, in order:
Jedi Masters
Luke Skywalker
Mara Jade Skywalker
Cilghal
Kyp Durron
Ikrit
Kenth Hamner
Tresina Lobi
Kam Solusar
Streen
Jedi Knights
Daye Azur-Jamin
Tam Azur-Jamin
Eryl Besa
Cheklev
Daeshara'cor
Dorsk 82
Jovan Drark
Eelysa
Keyan Farlander
Swilja Fenn
Corran Horn (pictured with beard, looking oddly like Samurai Jack)
Seyyerin Itoklo
Tenel Ka
Kyle Katarn (yes, Kyle Katarn)
Ulaha Kore
Lowbacca
Lusa
Markre Medjev
Kubis Nu
Octa Ramis
Alema Rar
Numa Rar
Miko Reglia
Ganner Rhysode
Saba Sebatyne
Wurth Skidder
Anakin Solo
Jacen Solo
Jaina Solo
Tekli
Raynar Thul
Kirana Ti
Tionne
Thrynni Vae
Zekk
Jedi Trainees
Jysella Horn
Valin Horn
Sannah
Tahiri Veila
Some of the things I found interesting (both articles are unfortunately way too long for me to type out, at least at the moment):
According to the Who's Who article, "By the time of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order consisted of approximately one hundred Knights and Masters (and twenty-odd Jedi children)." I've lost track of how many have died since then, but the fact that the Jedi children were counted separately is a big help in estimating the number of Jedi still alive as of SbS.
According to the info on Kyle, "As if stealing the Death Star plans and defeating the Dark Jedi Jerec weren't enough, Kyle now uses his military expertise to develop strategies to fight the Yuuzhan Vong." So
that's
where he's been...
According to Raynar's info, "he fought with distinction
and was wounded
aboard the Myrkr worldship in
Star by Star
." This seems to suggest that he might still be around...
In Jaina's info: "Jag Fel, son of legendary TIE fighter ace Baron Soontir Fel, has exhibited a budding romantic interest in Jaina Solo." Hint, hint...
Zekk's info states that, "He fought valiantly at Myrkr in
Star by Star
, but despite disgust for his dark-side past he may yet prove susceptible to Kyp Durron's philosophy of aggression." Maybe it was just me, but I didn't see anything that hinted at this while reading SbS, which seems to suggest that this could be something that might happen in the near future. TF.n's DJ spoilers mentioned something about an apprentice. Perhaps it's not Jaina who is apprenticed to Kyp, as many seem to think, but Zekk?
A few quotes from the Shelly Shapiro interview:
"Sadly, a few fans even threatened Salvatore, thinking Chewie's demise had been his idea. (It wasn't.) For her part, Shapiro can't remember who first broached the subject, but she does remember, 'All of us at that first meeting loved the idea.'"
"'We wanted the authors to bring as much of themselves to the storyline and character development as possible, within the confines of the bigger picture we were outlining,' [Shapiro] says, adding, 'There are parts left to be filled in. We're still not exactly sure how it's all going to end, though the pieces are all in place. And contrary to popular belief,
we have not decided who is to live and who is to die.
'"
"'Mara's disease was not supposed to be a way to get rid of Mara or to dis her--it was supposed to provide an interesting challenge for her and Luke,' Shapiro says. 'We have never, ever played favorites with those two couples, Luke and Mara and Han and Leia...'"
"[
Star by Star
], Shapiro says, is "the
Heart of Darkness
of the whole series. It's extremely pivotal. The books that [appear] in 2002 will take that and really shape the new direction of The New Jedi Order.'"
And all of those are just highlights.
Well, I'm off to go read this thing thoroughly from cover to cover now!

"Kenth Hamner is one of only two Jedi Masters who were not introduced in a prior era of
Star Wars
literature. First appearing in
Agents of Chaos II: Jedi Eclipse
, Hamner is a retired colonel formerly from the New Republic Defense Force. As an ex-military man, Hamner is an invaluable link between the Jedi and the New Republic's soldiers, many of whom view the Force-wielding 'magicians' as distractions or renegades. Luke Skywalker values Hamners level head and his insight into matters of strategy."
That might clear things up a bit...

So if Kenth Hamner was one of two Jedi Masters without prior appearances in EU lit, then who's the other one ?
And, although I will admit I know next to nothing about him, I would've sworn that Kyle Katarn was a Master as well. Im pretty sure Ive read that on these very boards, but I may be mistaken. Oh, and when do you all think we may see Kyle make an appearance in the NJO ? In Rebel Dream ? I hope he does pop up somewhere, cuz I am curious to know more about him.

I assume this is Addendum and/or Prologue/Preview to Mr. Wallace's upcoming NEW Essential Guide to Characters.
Cool. Thankfully my Insider dosn't arrive as late as my Gamers do. Can't wait.

RE: NJO in Star Wars Insider #57 (spoilers)
Everyone's so interested in what Anakin's profile says. Well, I posted this in the Jacen Solo fan club, but here it is again.
Anakin Solo
Youngest of the three Solo children, Anakin Solo was--in the eyes of some--Luke Skywalker's heir apparent to become the next head of the New Jedi Order. Anakin's birth came in the comic book series
Dark Empire II
, and in the years since he emerged as a confident young man with a deep, almost unconscious connection to the Force. In his mid-teens Anakin viewed the Force as a tool, much like his violet-bladed lightsaber. His pragmatic approach--the polar opposite of his brother Jacen's spirituality--made him vulnerable to the aggressiveness preached by Kyp Durron. In
Vector Prime
, Anakin blamed himself for the death of Chewbacca and allowed the guilt to affect his actions. When he later debated whether to fire the Centerpoint Station superweapon against the enemy, his hesitation triggered a disaster for the New Republic navy. Anakin emerged as a hero in
Edge of Victory I: Conquest
, gaining a new understanding of the Yuuzhan Vong by partnering with an enemy warrior. In
Star by Star
, Anakin led the seventeen-member Jedi mission to infiltrate an enemy warship at Myrkr, where he died heroically in combat.
Mastadge, while I know virtually nothing about Daye or Tinian, it does say in the article that they are married and have a son, Tam, also a Jedi.
And DVader316, Tresina Lobi is the other Jedi Master who made her debut in the NJO. She first appeared in BP.

The other one is that Tresina Lobi, what does it say about her?
Also, I'm assuming that since Kyle laid down his saber for several years and clearly wasn't comfortable with being a Jedi, he's not considered a master.
