How do you come up with Star Wars names?
There is a simple and well-known formula for generating your very own Star Wars name.
For your new first name:
Take the first 3 letters of your first name and add the first 2 letters of your last name.
For your new last name:
Take the first 2 letters of your Mother's maiden name and add the first 3 letters of the city you were born.
For your Star Wars honorific name and title:
Take the last three letters of your last name and reverse them. Add the name of the first car you drove/owned, insert the word "of" and tack on the name of the last medication you took.
Or use
The Star Wars Name Generator
Try throwing different names or words at it - you'll soon come up with your own galaxy of Star Wars characters.

RE: WELCOME NEWCOMERS! - Please check this out: Tutorials on almost Everything!
The compositing writup is still in progress. I'm learning a few things myself along the way.
The writeup will be generic, describing the basic mechanics of several compositing techniques and examples of how they could be applied in fan films. The post itself will not contain any step-by-step details on how to do compositing in specific programs. (There are just too many variations.)
One thing that I'd like to add to the end of the post would be a list of program specific links to help people find compositing instructions for the program they're using. I should be OK for MSP and After Effects.
Does anyone have some links for good compositing tutorials for Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Combustion, and/or other programs?
If so, please PM or eMail me so as not to clutter this thread with duplicate information.
Also, thanks again to those of you who have been posting your own help contributions. it has always been the intent of this thread to have as many people as possible posting helpful ideas, tutorials and hints, so keep it coming guys!
Thanks again...
Have fun.

LIGHTSABER CHOREOGRAPHY RESOURCES
Well, somehow this was left this out of the SABERS post, so here it is in it's own post.
If you're planning a lightsaber battle in your fan film, make sure you take the time to read through these pages. They can be a huge help.
A great place to start is by reading the
Nick Gillard Profile
at the offical site. This is the man who chroeographed the last two Star Wars movies and this page includes some background and insites into how he planned the saber choreography.
Next, don't forget to check out the
choreography discussion
in the TFN tutorials section by Tumblemoster and LoganSaj.
Another excellent resource is the
Stage Combat 101
page which includes a very simple technique for planning and documenting your planned battle.
Finally, perhaps one of the most complete and detailed lightsaber choreography page anywhere, check out Michael Haspil's
Thoughts on Staged Lightsaber Combat
. This page not only includes a discussion about "staged" vs. real combat, but also includes loads of drawings and
example movies
(!) detailing weapon and body positioning, footwork, attacks and blocks. This site is a must see for anyone planning a lightsaber battle.
Have fun!

BENN'S GUIDE TO CHEAP SOFTWARE
One can quite cheaply get all the software they need for a fan film and support their local newsagency by purchasing magazines with demo CDs. Quite often the aforementioned CDs feature free full programs, quite often previous versions of current expensive software. Glancing down at my desk at the moment I see I have full versions of AlamDV 1, Amorphium and Poser 3.
Other bonuses to this method of obtaining cheap software are the tutorials that often come in the magazine that will teach you the basics of your new programs. Plus quite often there are deals to upgrade your software to the latest version available, usually for a lot cheaper than if you were to buy the software new.
Add these to other free programs readily available on the internet (such as Blender, Terragen, Mainvision and The GIMP) and you have quite a fan filmmaking studio!

Yes, there are definitely a lot of new people rolling in. I can't wait to see all the new special effects tests, fan films, and fresh ideas.
On a very encouraging note, I've also noticed that most of the new questions being posted are very good, covering new equipment and software that are not easily answered by the typical set of FAQ's and tutorials. Hopefully that's an indication that many people are coming in and researching the existing material before posting their questions. (WOW! What a concept!) Great job everyone!!!!
[/hr]
I do have a new note today. This is relavant to newbies and oldbies alike:
BACK UP YOUR WORK!!!!!!!!!!
The datarates and file sizes that are involved with editing video and effects are much greater than anything else you are likely to be using your computer for. This takes a toll on your hard drive, and IDE drives seem especially prone to early failure when handling video.
There is a running curse around here that drives loaded with work seem to die within weeks of a projects completion. There have been numerous "I lost my data today
" threads over the months. (Including one by me.) Don't loose your film to something so easily addressed. BACK UP AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK!!!
Use a CD Burner, DVD Burner (just got mine today) or even your miniDV cam tapes, if that's all you've got, but don't let months of work vanish in an instant.
YOUR HARD DRIVE
WILL
FAIL!
Will it be this week? Are you ready?
Sorry to be so grim, but I'm just trying to help.
Now get back to work on those films!
Have fun!

PUBLISHING MOVIES ON THE NET
Now that your movie is done (congratulations !), you probably want people to see it. "Easy," you say, "I'll put it up on some website and people will download it."
Yes, but how ? For beginners, even subscribing to a host can be a pain. Provided your movie isn't long or has a small file size (follow
this tutorial
), here is a way to show your creation.
First of all, you will need to choose a host. Most of them, you know or have heard of : they are called Geocities, Tripod, Angelfire... They are the free hosts. They will not offer a lot of space or bandwith, but it can be enough to begin with (creating multiple accounts can be a solution too).
The general consensus is to avoid Geocities, for they have the worst bandwith offer. If you subscribe with them, more than half of your feedback will be "link is dead, sorry." or "bandwith exceeded. I HATE GEOCITIES !"
So anything but Geocities will work fine.
Once you've subscribed, the next step is to UPLOAD your video file(s). Most of the free hosts offer their own FTP upload solution, but it generally works bad or even doesn't work at all.
So you need an FTP program (here is a free one :
FTP Explorer
). The advantage with those FTP programs is that they don't have trasnfer limits (for example, the Tripod FTP page has a time limit : too much upload time and you'll be cut off), and they have a resume upload feature (which can come in handy for 56K users).
Install your FTP program. Now, you need to give it all the info it needs to connect to your host (example taken here : Tripod) :
* Profile Name : (this will identify your connection in the list - therefore call it "my Tripod site" or anything easily recognizable)
* Host Adress : ftp.tripod.com
* Login : (your tripod member name)
* Password (your Tripod password)
These informations will be saved by your FTP program. When you're done, click connect.
Some folders appear in the list. Browse through them and locate the one in which there is already a webpage (usually called
index.html
). This is the folder in which you should upload your stuff.
Click 'upload' in your FTP program, browse through your hard drive and begin the transfer !
Transfer = 100 %. Great ! Now, you need to post the link. This will usually be like =
http://(yourname).tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/videofile.mov
Make sure your link is correct, and then you can send it to your friends, post it in forums...
All of this can seem complicated at the beginning, but it's like rotoscoping a still image = the first try never looks good, but then it is very simple.
Every host also offer a website builder service. This is very simple to use (you choose a template and change the links and pictures), and since you are working on the host's website itself, you usually won't have to upload the pages (don't forget to upload your pictures, though !)
There ! I hope it was clear enough and that it will help you !
NOTE
: before subscribing, make sure the file format you want to upload is allowed on the server you're looking into. Some of them have some incredible offers (for free hosts) but only accept .txt, .jpg, .gif, and such. No video
.
NOTE 2
: for longer / bigger movies, you should prepare to shell out the money (sorry !) and find a non-free host (there again, be careful not to get ripped off), or try to have someone host your file. Here are a few of those hosts :
TFN Fanfilms
FanfilmFX
Fanflicks.com

MORE TUTORIAL LINKS FOR YOU...
These tutorials were posted to the forum over the past few days and their threads have slipped back, so I'm adding them to this index to keep them available:
HOLOGRAMS
The
Hologram Tutorial
on the CrewOfTwo website is basically the gold standard for creating SW holograms. It even includes a useful MOV format interference pattern animation!
BLASTER FIRE
Daft recently posted a new
Laser Blasts Tutorial
including very detailed, step-by-step instructions and screen shots for creating effective laser blasts in Photoshop.
CGI LIGHTING OF A SPACE SCENE
PixelMagic's Tutorial
is very effective and the concepts are applicable in most 3D animation programs. (I've been using the ideas in Bryce. Thanks Pixel!!!)
Have fun!

While it's great that you post a master tutorial list, most of the links simply bring you back to the master list. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?!
