Going with what seems to be a trend in reposting new and (hopefully improved) versions of old fics on here, I have decided to put this one up again. I am hoping that it will give me the inspiration I need to get off my duff and finally buckle down on its sequel (I know, Tim, I still owe you an outline!)
*grumble, grumble, insert usual disclaimers here* This stuff belongs to the Flanneled One. I'm just playing in his sandbox for a while.
And a special thanks to my betas, princess-sari, JadeSaber, and Darth_Tim. You guys are awesome.

Chapter 1
The stars snapped into focus as the large dark space cruiser dropped out of hyperspace near a nondescript bluegreen planet. On the bridge, the cruiser’s captain slowly released a breath that he had been unaware he had been holding. Although he expected no resistance from the planet, one could never be too careful. Especially when mission failure meant certain death.
The captain addressed the communications officer. "Have the fighters check in."
"Yes, sir." The communications officer moved his hand across his comm board, only to have it slammed down against the panel by an unseen force.
"There is no need to break communications silence, Captain," a deep voice said. The captain looked over his shoulder at the dark cloaked figure standing in front of the bridge viewport. The dark figure spoke without turning around. "Our escorts have already arrived. Besides, there is nothing out here but the Sessone colony itself."
"You will need less protection from what is out there," the figure intoned, "than you will need from me if you give us away."
The invisible grip on the communication officer’s arm suddenly lifted and he jerked it back close to his body, looking at it as if it were an alien thing.
The captain swallowed hard, summoning his courage. "But how do you know--" He broke off when several fighters streaked across the viewport and descended toward the planet.
The dark figure whirled around, and the hood of the dark cloak fell back, revealing a young man with spiky white hair and feral golden eyes. "Do not question me, Captain," Darth Nemesis said, jabbing a finger in front of the captain’s face. "Everything is on schedule." He strode toward the bridge door. "Send the transports to the surface at once."
The captain bowed stiffly. "Immediately, My Lord!" He sighed in relief when the bridge doors closed behind the departing Sith.
---------------
Hunkered down in the brush, a boy clutched his hunting blaster to his chest and peered between the branches out across the meadow. A small creek ran along the far side of the meadow. The delks would have to cross the large open area to get to it. He grinned as he pictured himself bringing yet another kill into the village. His family would eat fresh meat while everyone else waited on the next supply ship from Alderaan.
Despite his tender age, Numen Brulo was a skilled hunter. The older boys and young men of his village called it luck, but Numen knew better. Most of them were not willing to walk this far away from the settlement, especially at night. He had been out here since dusk, settling on this position because of its proximity to the creek, but more importantly because of its open field of fire. Despite their bulky, placid appearances, delks were light on their feet, and their multifacted eyes gave them an exceptional range of vision. Numen knew that if he hoped to bring one home, he would have to be quick, silent, and accurate.
Maybe I can get a male this time, with branched horns. That'll show Timar—
A roaring sound and a sudden gust of hot wind jerked him from his reverie. He saw a dark, boxy transport craft settling into the meadow. Numen squinted through the wind at the unfamiliar ship. Other than the Alderaanian resupply ships, visitors to Sessone were rare, and they usually landed in the fields next to the settlement. Curiosity overcoming his apprehension, Numen stood to get a better look.
Numen immediately ducked back under cover and made himself as small as possible as the transport’s ramp lowered, throwing light across the meadow. He stared in shock through the brush as at least fifty soldiers wearing gray armor made their way out of the ship. Black slit visors hid their faces. Antennae and weaponry seemed to sprout from their armor, and the light from Sessone’s moons glinted off their vicious-looking blaster rifles. Numen thought they looked like oversized hard-shell beetles. The soldiers moved swiftly and silently into the woods surrounding the meadow, headed towards the village.
Numen remained crouched behind the brush for a long time, paralyzed with fear. His thoughts turned to his family, at home in their beds. He knew the woods. He could get to the settlement quickly, maybe sound a warning before the soldiers got there. Gathering up his courage and his blaster, Numen left his hiding place and hurried into the woods.
---------------
Reaching the edge of the village, the soldiers abandoned their silence. With blood-curdling war cries, they charged through the streets, breaking into homes and dragging the occupants into the streets. Flames crackled as they set the buildings afire. The villagers screamed as the soldiers began methodically slaughtering all but the young men. Panicking, the villagers broke and ran, only to be shot down in their tracks. One woman was beaten to death with rifle butts as she attempted to escape to the forest.
In the center of the village, Darth Nemesis and one of the armored officers watched and waited. Soon a squad approached, dragging a group of a dozen young men. The soldiers threw the people to the ground. The Sith Lord paced the line, inspecting each prisoner. “Is this all you could find, Sergeant?” he asked.
“Yes, my Lord,” the sergeant replied. “These were the only ones that met the description.”
"Have you taken the samples yet?" Nemesis asked.
"No, My Lord!"
"Then do so," ordered Nemesis. He turned to the officer. "Colonel Fett, do you have the analyzer?"
"Yes, sir," said Fett. He took a device from his belt and held it up. They watched as the sergeant took a wicked-looking knife from his belt and advanced on the prisoners. One man leaped on the sergeant, cursing as he tried to pry the knife away. He received a rifle butt to the back of his head for his trouble. When the man was subdued, the sergeant cut a gash in his arm and dabbed blood onto an analysis chip. He repeated the process with the other villagers
Fett slipped each chip into the analyzer. When the results were complete, he pointed at three men in the center of the group. Nemesis eyed the prisoners with disgust. Then he wheeled around, his red-bladed lightsaber slashing through the unlucky three. Their bodies fell on the grass. The remaining prisoners screamed.
"Shut up!" ordered Fett, brandishing his weapon. The prisoners fell quiet, some watching him with defiance, others with abject fear. "Take them to the ship, Sergeant."
"Yes, sir!" The soldiers yanked the captives to their feet and herded them toward the woods. The prisoners stumbled along, with only the occasional whimper breaking their shocked silence. The group joined the other soldiers that were making their way back to the transport.
Colonel Fett turned to the Sith. "We’re finished here, My Lord," he said.
"Very well. Alert the fighters." Nemesis turned on his heel and headed for his shuttle. Fett barked orders into his comlink, then followed. As the shuttle lifted off, fighters screamed in over the trees, bombarding the village and laying waste to what little remained.
---------------
Standing in the trees at the edge of town, Numen Brulo stared in horror at the destruction of his home. An eerie silence lay over the smoking ruins. He ran through the rubble, screaming for someone, anyone, but knowing there would be no answer.

OK - I see more sleep deprivation ahead. Damn it,
Jae
- I do NOT have time for this - but you know I can't resist. Exactly how much did you change?
And is the rewrite complete - or do we have to wait for updates?
Excellent, even the second time around.

Re-post it and they will come... I hope!
Thanks, everyone, for the responses. I don't anticipate that there will be major changes to the story itself, hopefully just changes to tighten up the narrative and improve the characterizations. Though if I get an off-the-wall idea for the sequel that require a major change here, I will certainly include it.
But now I must ponder what gifts to give out to loyal readers. Ish was easy - sharp words and insults were all that she needed, but that might not work on everyone.
Suggestions?

RE: The Calm Before - repost of SW Ep2 (Insert Pretentious Title Here)
Chapter 2
Removed from the bustle and urban sprawl, the Jedi Temple stood alone in its section of the planet-wide city. The architecture of the surrounding area had been deliberately designed at a smaller scale, as a sign of the respect that the original architects had felt for the Jedi Order.
At the top of the one of the spires, the Jedi Council chamber afforded its occupants a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of Coruscant. At the moment, however, Obi-Wan Kenobi was not enjoying the view - he was attempting to answer questions from the Council. Questions about his apprentice.
Again.
"It was just a fistfight, Master." Obi-Wan addressed the dark-skinned human seated in front of him. "And it was over almost as quickly as it began."
"Resulting in one Padawan at the healers' with a broken nose and another with a split lip." Jedi Master Mace Windu’s eyes bored into him. "And I understand that Anakin has a black eye."
"The outcome matters not," said Yoda. "His first altercation, this is not. Too quick to anger is he. Control. He must learn control." He rapped his gimmer stick against the floor for emphasis.
"What prompted this latest outburst?" Ki-Adi Mundi asked. The other Council members leaned forward. They were all interested in the progress of Anakin Skywalker.
Obi-Wan tucked his hands into the sleeves of his cloak. "As you know, Masters, over the last several years, there have been a number of slave emancipation missions to outlying worlds. Anakin is frustrated because he doesn’t understand why there has not yet been such a mission to Tatooine."
"The Senate and the Supreme Chancellor’s office set the priorities for emancipation missions." Master Windu shook his head. "The personal concerns of one Jedi Padawan are irrelevant."
"I am aware of that, Master," Obi-Wan replied. "Explaining it to my headstrong apprentice is another matter entirely."
"I am sure it is." Master Adi Gallia regarded Obi-Wan with humor and sympathy. "Please continue."
"Two Padawans that just returned from the recent mission to Bespin were taunting Anakin about his background and the fact that his mother is still a slave." Obi-Wan kept his opinion of the offending Padawans to himself. Anakin wasn't the only one in need of self-control. "They hinted that there would never be a mission to the Tatooine because, quote: "there's nothing out there worth saving." He paused. “
That’s
when Anakin attacked them."
"Where is Anakin now, Obi-Wan?" Mace asked.
"In the gardens, Master," replied Obi-Wan. "I sent him there to calm down."
"Go to him, then," ordered Yoda. He leaned forward in his chair, his blue eyes intense. "Gain control, he must, Obi-Wan! A powerful Jedi, he will be, but dangerous if he does not learn!"
"Yes, Master." Obi-Wan bowed and left.
---------------
Obi-Wan strode toward the gardens, his thoughts in turmoil. Anakin was the most talented Padawan in the Temple; that was obvious to everyone. Although Obi-Wan harbored few doubts about his ability to train the boy, he occasionally wished for Qui-Gon’s wisdom to guide him. This was one of those times. Anakin’s situation was so unusual that no one had much to offer in the way of advice. Even Master Yoda just said, "Trust your instincts, you should."
Most potential Jedi were brought to the Temple before they were a year old. Anakin was nine when he arrived; practically an ancient. No one that old had ever been accepted for training, but within a year of his arrival, he had caught up with and surpassed all of the other pupils his age. The Force swirled about him like a storm, and his potential seemed unlimited.
In the eyes of the other students, Anakin had not paid his dues. He had come into the Temple already apprenticed to a Jedi. He never had to struggle through training every day, hoping to be noticed by a Master and selected as a Padawan. Obi-Wan knew that Anakin could feel their jealousy and resentment, and that he responded by being aloof and indifferent. To make matters worse, Anakin lacked the serenity typical to most Jedi. He was impetuous and often impatient. His emotions seethed beneath his calm façade, and most of the time he made only cursory attempts to control them. The other Padawans could sense this, and they hurled his slave background in his face whenever they felt like he was getting too arrogant.
Still, Anakin needs to walk away from their insults.
Master Yoda was right – emotional mastery was critical for all Jedi, but even more so for one with Anakin’s power.
But he has gotten better
, Obi-Wan thought.
When I first started training him, it seemed like he was fighting every other day.
Obi-Wan often worried about Anakin’s isolation. He was a likeable young man, full of boyish charm and enthusiasm, yet there was a place deep within him that Obi-Wan could not reach – had never been able to reach. It was a small hard core that Anakin kept hidden in his heart.
Obi-Wan entered the gardens and made his through the lush foliage to a small waterfall near the center. There he saw his apprentice stretched out on the grass, meditating. Obi-Wan swallowed his surprise. Anakin had little use for meditation – he was more inclined toward action than introspection, and he usually spent his meditation time brooding and pacing.
Perhaps he is just trying to avoid another lecture on “The Importance of Meditation.”
Anakin had calmed down. His handsome features were composed and Obi-Wan sensed none of the anger that had filled him earlier.
I almost hate to interrupt him,
Obi-Wan thought.
"But you will anyway, right?" Anakin’s voice held a trace of amusement. He opened his eyes and favored his master with a lop-sided grin. "You’re projecting, Obi-Wan. That’s not like you."
Obi-Wan shook his head. Anakin was very attuned to him, both because of the time they had spent together and the boy’s innate power. It still surprised him sometimes. "How long have you been aware of me?"
"For a while." Anakin sat up. "You seem a bit agitated."
"I’ve just come from the Council, Anakin." Obi-Wan sat down and looked directly into his apprentice’s blue eyes. "They are deeply concerned about this latest altercation. They fear that you are unable to control your anger."
"I am sorry, Obi-Wan. Did you get in trouble with the Council?"
"No more than usual." Obi-Wan waved away the boy’s concerns, knowing they were a dodge from talking about the issue. "I thought you had finally learned to ignore the others’ remarks. But you’ve been in three fights since we returned to Coruscant. You know the others bait you to see if you will react in anger – and when you do, it confirms their cynical opinions of you. You must learn to walk away."
Anakin stood and started pacing. "I know, Master. It’s just that Deak and Jorel just got back from a mission, and they said that…. " He paused a moment, then plunged on, "I just don’t understand why there hasn’t been a rescue mission to Tatooine. It seems as if every other backwater rock on the fringes has had one." He looked down, as if daring his master to contradict him.
"I’m not sure why either, Anakin," Obi-Wan admitted. "The Senate—"
"Tatoo I will go supernova before the Senate decides anything!" Anakin exploded. "The Jedi are supposed to be the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy! What greater injustice is there than the enslavement of sentient beings? Laws against it already exist! Why can’t we enforce them?"
"It’s not that simple, and you know it," said Obi-Wan. "The Council—"
"—is no better than the Senate!" Anakin interrupted, his voice full of anger. His fists clenched and unclenched by his side. "They sit in their tower, apathetic to the suffering of people in the real galaxy! ‘Cannot interfere,’ they say. What good does it do to have Jedi powers if we don’t use them to help?"
"Anakin, calm down," Obi-Wan admonished. He wondered if he would ever get used to the boy’s mercurial moods. "The Republic often asks us to mediate conflicts. Mediate.” He caught and held Anakin’s gaze. “If the Jedi unilaterally intervene in political affairs, we undermine the democracy."
"But slavery isn’t a political question!" Anakin said. "It’s a moral and legal issue!"
"It most certainly is a political issue," Obi-Wan lectured. "There are many sectoral governments, especially on the Rim, that choose to selectively enforce the anti-slavery laws, or ignore them all together. Granted, much of this is due to the flow of credits that slavers provide to politicians, including Senators. Is this reprehensible? Yes! But the point is that unless these governments ask for our help, and the Senate approves, we cannot step in. Even then, we can only advise and assist. We cannot interfere."
"Even if that means allowing injustices to continue?" Anakin asked tightly.
Obi-Wan hedged. "I wouldn’t put it that way."
"Maybe not, but you mean it that way!"
Obi-Wan pushed back his irritation. They had covered this territory many times before. "Anakin, the Senate governs the Republic, not the Jedi. The Senators are elected by their people to represent them, to give them their voice in the government. If we act without the Senate’s consent, we interfere with the will of the people."
Anakin snorted. "The Senate hardly represents anything but the greed of its own members. Why can’t we just take action if that’s what is best for everyone?"
"And who is to decide what is best for everyone? You? Me? The Council?" Obi-Wan asked quietly. "Your intentions are good, Padawan, but the Republic guarantees every world the right to self-determination. There are always those who will refuse our help, even if it is in their best interests to accept. And it is their right to do so."
Anakin sighed in frustration and flopped down on the grass. He was silent for while, a faraway look on his face. He had gone to that quiet place deep inside, the place where Obi-Wan had never been able to reach him. Obi-Wan marveled at how fast Anakin could still himself, but the hiding disturbed him. As it had for years.
"There is something else troubling you, Anakin. Tell me."
Anakin remained silent for a few moments, then with a resigned look and a heavy sigh, he began.
"It’s a vision. Always the same. There’s a dark man in a cloak – I can hear him laughing. And then thousands of armored soldiers. I see a city in ruins. And Mom calling for me, reaching out for me. Then pain. Then…." He squeezed his eyes shut. "Then…nothing."
Obi-Wan frowned.
What is he not telling me?
He shook his head. "You must learn to control your emotions, Anakin," he said. "The Force allows you to see many things. You cannot take all of your visions literally."
"I’ve heard this lesson before."
"You have yet to learn it."
They glared at each other for a moment.
He’s so impatient
, thought Obi-Wan.
"You’ve always taught me that the Force will guide us," said Anakin, right on the edge of defiance. "Shouldn't I listen to what it's telling me?"
"The future is always in motion. Interpreting what you’ve seen is an important part of your training. You need to meditate on what you’ve seen." Obi-Wan put his hand on the young man’s shoulder. "I know it's a difficult thing."
Anakin didn’t look at him. Obi-Wan squeezed his shoulder, then asked, "How is your eye?"
Anakin flushed and said, "It’s throbbing a bit." He covered the swollen eye with his hand. "But hey, you should see Deak’s fist. I really messed it up."
"Here, let me look." Obi-Wan pried Anakin’s hand away. He probed at the eye. "Perhaps you should go to the healers wing and get it looked after."
"I can control the pain myself, Master. And it serves as a reminder of my foolishness."
"That may be, Padawan, but it is completely unpresentable." Obi-Wan grinned. "I can’t have my apprentice running around looking like that – it will ruin my reputation!"

Great post, Jae. I like the interaction between Anakin and Obi-Wan. I think Obi-Wan shows just the right mix of patience and exasperation with Anakin, especially since Anakin seems to have the ability to find your last nerve and tap-dance on it. I find Anakin's political views a bit chilling, though.

Yes, yes, I'm morally obligated to reply...
Excellent post - I think this scene is very revealing with Anakin's character, which is something that's rare but necessary this early in the story. So many hints that can go to the light or dark at this point, which is precisely what a good prequel story needs.
Lovely work, as usual.

I always think it interesting when PT writers explore how politics affect (or is percieved to affect) the actions of the Jedi Order. I always pictured Anakin as a "screw it, we're fixing the problem NOW" type of person and you do a great job portraying it, and his frustrations at being unable to do anything about it...
