Well, here it is, my attempt at a handmaiden fic.
The story takes place during the events of TPM and circles around Queen Amidala and her handmaidens.
It also features many original characters of mine, primarily Sau Doolane who is better known as Inni Doona in my previous fic
Along the Edges
. This is the prequel, so new readers don't have to go to
Along the Edges
to enjoy
The Young Flames
.

PG-13
A prelude in two parts...
Part One: The Thanes
-
The fire in Thane Doona's bedroom was dying. "Here, Father, let me build a new one."
The elderly thane tapped his cane on the wooden floor in approval. "It has been a unusually cold season, so far," he said. "The kernel crop may not be as financially successful this year unless the weather takes a turn for the better."
"But
we
are financially successful, Father," his son said after turning away from the newly stoked fire, raising a finger for emphasis. "The Doona family can be incredibly powerful on Naboo if you'll allow it."
Thane Doona shook his head as he took to his reading chair positioned by the expansive window. Spread outside that window was the entire western quarter of his Thanedom: The Great Southwestern Hills of Naboo and it's capital city, Seven Hills. From the day settlers migrated from the northern regions of Naboo to the dryer oasis of the southwestern hills, the Doona name had been at the forefront of the region. The family founder, Authlo Doona, helped to incorporate and defend the settlers, becoming one of it's largest land owners and then it's ruler. "The Doona family has a responsibility to the people of the Great Southwestern Hills and all of the Naboo, Crauft."
"But it has no sway in the capital of Naboo," Crauft Doona pointed out, moving to his father's side. "It never has. It's as if Theed hardly cares if we exist at all."
"We are part of the Naboo." The thane coughed into his sleeve. "But we are allowed to operate independently because of that success you are so proud of."
"We would be more powerful if we did not have to pay taxes to Theed."
"All regions of Naboo pay taxes to Theed."
Crauft went to one knee to plead with his father, his dark eyes shinning. "But we are almost an independent nation, Father. We
are
an independent nation. We have no need to be ruled by Theed. We could have our own representative in the Galactic Senate. Not even the gunguns have that!"
The thane waved his hand in annoyance. "Posh! The gunguns don't want to have anything to do with the Naboo or the Senate. They just want to be left alone, and that's the way it will be. That's the way it
should
be!"
The younger Doona nodded. "Yes, Father, the gunguns have no future with the Naboo or otherwise." The thane raised an eyebrow at his son's statement but said nothing. "But we, Father, we can have a future all our own. The Congress of the Republic can be easily swayed by one man. Senator Palpatine is working very dilligently on behave of the Naboo---"
Thane Doona cut his son off. "You admire Cos Palpatine? You've spend too much time on Coruscant---"
"Where I have learn quite a bit about democracy," Crauft sneered, standing and turning away from his father. He picked up a brand and stoked the fire, again, increasing the light and the temperature in the room. "Every last being is looking out for itself despite the consequences to others." He noisily returned the brand to it's rack. "And do you know who pays for it most?"
"The Outer Rim Worlds," Thane Doona nodded. "As long as the capital of the Republic is a core world, rim worlds will unjustly carry the burden." He finished the sentence in a fit of coughing. "Help me to my bed, my son. If I take that medical formula shake you have found while in my chair, I'll fall asleep before I can---" Another fit of coughing took over, cutting off his voice.
Crauft moved again to his father's side and took his elbow to help manuever him to the bed. "Just a sip for now, Father, we haven't finish our discussion."
"Yes, yes," the thane said, patting his son's smooth hand with a gnarled one. "And I'm sure you were about to get to your point."
His son made an exasperated face behind his back. "My point is that we don't have to follow Theed's laws. With Seven Hills as our capital, we can create laws of our own and have our own representation in the Senate."
"But I thought we were discussing the fact that Outer Rim Worlds suffered at the hands of the Senate?"
"Because they don't have the right people in the Senate to represent them!" Crauft crossed the room to where he kept his father's medicine on a sideboard. "Senator Palpatine is doing all he can for Naboo, but he needs help. If we breakaway from the Naboo government, we could possibly get our own seat in the Senate."
Thane Doona shook his head as he watched his son prepare his medicine. "Two species of beings live on Mon Calamari, and they have only one seat in the Senate."
Crauft rolled his eyes, the flickering light from the fire turning his face red. "And the Quarren are one of the worse of the Senate's squabbling politicians."
"What is your point, Crauft," Thane Doona rumbled as his son handed him the glass containing his medicine. He took a careful sip. "I hate going to bed with political matters on my mind. It gives me a terrible headache in the morning." He emphasized his last words with a jaw-cracking yawn.
His son sat on the edge of the bed, taking one of the extra pillows in his hands. "With some time, and some patience," he said in his most calming voice. "I believe that House Doona can help Naboo throw off the yoke of the Republic, then become a separate power on it's own under a new sector government. The galaxy is too big to be ruled by one body of senators; it needs to be divided up."
Frowning as he licked his lips, Thane Doona said, "But Queen Amidala is a staunch backer of the Republic. How---"
"That child!?" Crauft exploded throwing up his hands. "That girl is so steeped in tradition, she'd have us withdrawl from our own lands and turn it into a natural preserve. Make it what it once was before humans ever walked the planet. Then the gunguns will overrun your thanedom, could you just see them flapping through the halls of Doona Manor!? I, for one, will never stand for such actions."
"Peace, Crauft, peace. I'm sure the Queen, or her advisors, does not have any plans on returning our lands to the gunguns," he assured his son, placing his drink on his bedside table. "The reason
I
voted for her was her firm stance on term limits. King Veruna was an embarrassment in his time, becoming too involved in off-world politics. Spending more time then not off-world."
The thane raised his chin and drew his drooping eyes to his son's profile. "And I believe your time off-world has ended. I have never been more proud of what you have accomplished while I have been ill."
Crauft crossed his arms around the pillow and shook his head, his eyes focusing on the stars outside the window. "Audré could have done just as well. You should have called her back from Theed."
"You forget, your half-sister is much younger than you are," the thane answered, pointing his finger at his son. "Twenty years does not a ruler make, and you
have
ruled in my place. It would have been a difficult job for her to concentrate on what with her getting married in a few days." He coughed then yawned. "I do hope I'm feeling better by then."
"And that's another thing," Crauft Doona growled, tightening his grip on the pillow. "That Doolane man. Just the name is an afront to ours. Do you know how many bastardizations of our name exists in the Great Southwestern Hills?"
"Four-hundred, sixty-nine." Thane Doona smiled, almost proud of the number. "We are honored."
"We are mocked!" his son spat. Outside the window, a glimmer of light flashed amongst the stars, then another, and another. Crauft pulled his eyes from the flashes, looking down at the pillow in his hands and adjusting his grip. "Are you against my idea of seperating from the Naboo, Father?" he asked softly.
A sad smile came to the thane's face as he lowered himself into his pillows. His first and only son, twice his only daughter's age, was ambitious and eager, the thing he admired most in him. "Though I believe you feel that in your heart, your intentions are good---"
"Father, I've met a man called Sid---"
Thane Doona held up a hand to forestall his son's words. "But I can't allow such a proposition at this time. We are Naboo, my son. The matter is settled." He tried to forgive himself after seeing the forlorned look on his son's face.
The man with the pillow between his hands turned, "Here, Father, let me help you," and pushed it against his father's face until the thane moved no more.

WOW! I'm hooked!
So Audre is his half sister, didn't expect that and who is this Sid that he met? And did he just kill the Thane?
Excellent background info, set the scene very nicely!

BYLEAH!
(Think of a Lando-like squeal/shriek/exclamation as he almost gets yanked into the Sarlaac pit, or however you spell that.)
Oh my. That was most, umm (and take this as a compliment, I love this movie) Gladiator-like. Why do I get the feeling I don't like this Crauft Doona, hmmm?
Ah sarcasm. What a wondrous thing. But really, nice dark way to begin and lure us into the story. The lines here are already connecting a few dots for me in my head. Interesting allusions to the future separtist movement of the AotC time period. Makes it very clear that even that too was already being staged 10 years prior those events (if not longer), at least in your story. (Though I would expect that to be canon in theory at least even if not applicable to your AU.)
I am so incredibly excited to see your prequel begin. I look forward to more, but if I periodically drop off the JCF and don't drop any feedback, don't think I'm not reading when I can, I'm just getting psycho-busy as my exhibition approaches. I'll always give you feedback for the whole thing, even if I'm late about it.

*Trumpets blare*
It started!
Okay, I'm definitely with the crowd of people who don't like Crauft Doona--smothering your own father isn't the most likeable trait you can find. I'm willing to guess that the Sid-- person he met is Sidious, as opposed to, I don't know, Sid Vicious?
The political debates were well-done and showed Crauft's willpower and willingness to break away from his home just for power.
I'll be eagerly awaiting the next post!

Wow,
KA
What a great start! Wonderful, complex characters, insightful look into Naboo politics, and patricide to boot! Whoo hoo! I'm starting this fic, but I'm still planning on finishing your other one. Since this is a prequel, I should be okay in not getting spoiled for ending for your first one.
Oh, quick question. I noticed you gave Palpatine a first name. Is that your invention or did you find it somewhere? I've been looking everywhere for Palpy's first name.

Arwyn
- Thanks for asking that question about Palpatine's name. In the process of my research for this story, I stumbled upon this entry at
imdb.com
where they list Palpatine's first name as "Cos", so I decided to run with it. That detailed credit list has a number of other "uncredited" names that are really interesting, too. Cos is
not
, however, listed at the Official Site.
L
- Believe it or not, I wasn't thinking of
Gladiator
as I wrote that scene, and I haven't seen it in a while, but thanks for pointing that out. Maybe that movie had a greater inpact on my psyche than I thought!
More dots to connect in the next post this afternoon, and it'll be a bit lighter.
Sabe
- The excerpt I posted from this at the end of
Along the Edges
will have a clue as to whether Thane Doona was killed or not, but I guess you could probably figure that out by the speculations already posted here by your fellow readers.
Moonbeam
- Crauft is a nasty, evil man, and, if you may recall, we have already seen him before in
Along the Edges
, where he makes a cameo showing what other dirty deeds he is capable of.
I'm thrilled that you are all back and excited for more!
The second part of the prelude will be posted this afternoon.
See you then.

prelude continues...
Part Two: Audré and Sau
-
They moved down The Waterfall's grand staircase hand in hand, their smiles fueled by food, wine, and happiness. "Yes, that is far too romantic a place to have the rehersal dinner," Audré laughed as she took the final set of stairs two at a time.
Her fiancé pulled her close, his hand finding a new home on her hip. "Have I ever lied to you?"
She looked up into his green eyes and kissed his chin. "Never, which infuriates me to no end."
"And why is that?"
"Because everything you say is true." She kissed his chin again. "Just this once, I want you to be wrong."
He lifted his eyes to the moon climbing across Theed's nighttime sky. "Then the sun is the moon, and the moon is the sun."
Audré followed his gaze, then, with a wicked grin, threw her hands up with an exasperated sigh. "You're right, again. The moon is the sun."
"You are far too good for my ego, have I told you that?" They crossed the square outside the restaurant and began a slow trek to the public observatory to gaze at the stars. Inside the restaurant, as table candles flickered and the grand waterfall it was named after gurgled, Audré had looked up at the luminous constellations on the domed ceiling and wondered aloud how accurate they were. "The night is still young," her fiancé had told her. "We can go to the observatory and find out?"
"It's so warm tonight and the sky is so clear," she said, spinning away from him, the hem of her pine-green skirt flaring. "We could spend the rest of the night counting stars, Sau."
Sau Doolane stopped and put his hands in his pockets, watching his intended dance from pool of lamplight to pool of lamplight. How long had he been chasing her? Officially, it had been just over three years since they were first introduced by a mutual friend who had learned of his crush on the young Lady Doona. Sethron Rose had been the son of a cook at Doona Manor and had known Audré since childhood. Years later, he met Sau as a freshman at the Seven Hills Academy where they were roommates, sharing several classes, and where he learned of the crush Sau had for the girl that had been festering for years. "Were you there on her Titling Day? She was so beautiful in that blue and white dress, that golden necklace type thing around her neck. And her hair! The reason it rained that afternoon is because the sun was crying with envy." Sethron had fallen back on his bunk laughing when he heard that. "It's true," Sau insisted, just a little peeved that his friend was finding humor in the statement. "Nothing shone more brighter than her hair on that day. Well, maybe her smile..." He was soon lost in the memory.
"I hate to break it to you," Sethron said after recovering from his laughing fit. "But most of that was a wig she had specially made in Theed. If we ever have a Queen again, she'd go to the exact same place for
her
hair supplies." He shook his head and brushed at a tear coming from his eye. "Good Gods, Man. She was only thirteen at the time!"
"And I was only fifteen. How would you know how I feel anyway, you've know her all her life, she's more like a sister to you than a woman." Sau was feeling a bit irked at his friend's mirth.
Sethron made it up for him several months later by making him his guest at the Winter Solstice Gala at Doona Manor. The young cadets of the Seven Hills Guard showed-up in their dark-blue, freshly pressed dress uniforms, Sau decidedly more jittery than his friend at his first official function at Doona Manor. "Come on, I'll introduce you to the lady of the house."
Sau had lost all cardiovascular control at his friend's words. "She's here?" he voiced with a hissing whisper.
"Of course she is," Sethron told him, smiling as beads of sweat popped out on Sau's forehead. "This is her home afterall," he added as they began to move through the festive crowd.
Sau nodded vigorously, mentally kicking himself for even asking the question. He had let Sethron talk him into going to the function just because there was a chance that he might actually get to see Audré Doona in person. Was she truely the goddess he had worshipped in his dreams? Or was she just a false idol, more style than substance? He would learn soon enough, becaue Sethron was manuevering him across the crowded atrium to where the young Lady Doona was greeting guests, his heavily starched collar becoming more restrictive with every step.
Later on, as time passed, neither of them could remember their first words to each other, although Sethron constantly reminded them that it was babbling gibberish, half-word sentences that lasted the whole night through. It seemed that love at first sight worked both ways.
Now, here they were, three years later, on the cusp of their wedding day. Sau shook his head in disbelief as he watch Audré stalk back across the square, her golden hair catching the lamplight. "Are you just going to stand there, or are we going to look at the stars?"
His mouth opened for a flippant rejoinder, but he closed it, deciding to let her take his arm in her's instead. "Truely being in love," Sethron had told him once, "is knowing when to keep your big mouth shut. My friend, you have a
very
big mouth."
Sau had learned that lesson the hard way. Having graduated from the Seven Hills Academy with honors, five places above Sethron, he had been given the option of a position as a captain in the Southwestern Hills Guard. But he had also been recruited for a spot in the Naboo Royal Guard, a valued and highly paid position in Theed itself. The decision had been difficult until the day Audré told him she had been accepted into the Royal Academy in Theed. "I, I won't go if you don't want me to." She was trying very hard not to let her nerves show.
The decision was easy after that, but his devious mind made him not tell her about the offer in Theed, creating a heart-breaking good-bye scene when she boarded the shuttle to Theed and to begin her classes at the academy. "This is very mean of you," Sethron told him over the shuttle's roaring engines while they waved good-bye.
Audré was not happy about it either, especially when Lieutenant Sau Doolane of the Naboo Royal Guard showed up at the front door of the Doona residence in Theed a week later. She was furious that he didn't tell her he was coming to Theed, only allowing him back into her life a week and three dozen Summer Sunset bouquets later.
It took that, two dozen Queen Yram bouquets, and just enough roses for her to love him again, and before he drained his bank account, after making a snippy comment about a particular classmate of her's. "And you thing King Veruna's age and experience makes him a better ruler? I'm encouraging Amidala to take up her campaign because Naboo needs a serious change," she insisted, her eyes throwing daggers at him.
Even though they had made up before the election, she allowed him to support Amidala's opposition, and let him have a smug earful when the final results came in. He responded by asking her to marry him.
There had been no political outbursts in the half year since.
"They look fairly accurate to me," she was saying as she pulled her eyes away from the public telescope outside the Theed Observatory. "Though the Huntress is further north on The Waterfalls' ceiling than on the ceiling of the world. And the Peko-Peko is wider, too."
Sau was studying the statues of great Naboo cosmological scientists when he asked, "Can you see Coruscant this time of year?"
"I think so," she answered as she returned to the telescope. "It's in the constellation--- Oh!"
Her sudden outburst of surprise snapped his head in her direction, concern coming to his voice when he asked what was wrong. She shook her head and looked through the telescope again. "Nothing. A ship came out of hyperspace right in my--- Look! There's another! And another!"
He squinted at the night sky, starbursts of ships leaving hyperspace creating a ring around the planet. Curious, he asked, "I wonder what that is all about?"
Audré shook her head again. "I don't know, I don't recognize the... the... what's the word?"
"Configuration," Lieutenant Doolane said as he took her place at the telescope.
"Do you recognize it? They're all the same."
He withdrew from the telescope and mirrored her frown, lifting his questioning gaze to the sky filling with new points of light. "They're Trade Federation."
*****
Queen Amidala of the Naboo finally placed her head on her pillow with a contented sigh. It had been another long day running her home planet. After comforting words from Rabé, the young handmaiden selected for such duties as well as preparing her hair, making her the handmaiden who spent the most time in her presence, she placed a frustration venting, ability questioning, tear-filled audio-only call home to her parents. She started to feel better about her day after their encouraging words. "As much as I love to hear from you, Padmé," her mother had told her, "don't let this become a habit."
She laughed, wiping away those tears of frustration she did not want her mother to see. "It'll get better before it gets worse, right Mom?"
"Exactly."
*****
Sabé, Queen Amidala's best friend and decoy in times of danger, already dressed in her night clothes, met the messenger in the auricle reception area outside Queen Amidala's chambers. Keeping her face neutral, hiding the worry and concern boiling inside her, she dismissed the messenger, closing the doors behind him. It had been a long day for her friend, she thought as she silently padded across the floor to the archway leading into Amidala's bedroom, and now, it sounded as if they were not going to get any shorter.
"Your Highness," she said as she pushed the doors open. "The Trade Federation has blockaded Naboo."

RE: The Young Flames - (TPM-era) handmaidens and original characters
The gradually growing romance shown between Audre and Sau (there's something I'll have to get used to!) was excellent, and so was the brief appearance of Padme.
And things will get worse before they get better, if
Edges
was any indication.
I have the funniest feeling we're being set up for a fall with Audre after Doona's thoughts of her in
Edges
... Any chance you can call me on that?

It was a good scene though, I liked the conflicting thoughts of the son and father. Though I think it would be a bad idea for them to form their seperate 'state' away from Naboo, it just makes things more confusing all around.
Can't wait for more!

RE: The Young Flames - (TPM-era) handmaidens and original characters
I haven't read your other one, but this one is off to a great start! I love the little touches that make it real and yet also exotic and Star Wars-y, like the names of the different cadet regiments, and the names of the floral bouquets.
Yup, this one's an "upper!"
(Do I need to use the M word yet?)
