    Yeah Wiz, this is a very nice R2. Are you planning on sharing him on Sci-fi? If so, this is probably the best looking R2 for 3DS!

    R2 is my favorite character aswell.

    Thanks once again fellas :)

    Yeah I am planning to share him (extremely flattered that people want to use him), just as soon as some final tidy-ups and tweaks are done, the lighting especialy needs refining as it is as OC said a little washed out, but tweaking and playing will sort that (still learning Mental ray and its materials but getting there) :)

    Cheers,

    Wiz.

    Hope you all had a great Christmas a Happy New Year to you all!

    Well its been a while since I posted and sometime since i did any work on me little astromech fella, I had to buy a new machine and get all that sorted but now finally up and running again and been following the continuing fantastic work by Mverta!!

    As ever I am learning from Mike very kindly sharing his knowledge and experience and I have taken a new approach with my R2!

    Doing a whole new texture pass and continuing to get to grips with Mental Ray, so hopefully I am now on the final pass on my R2 (for this rendition anyway) and will have him completed soon... cough... I promise this time!

    [image=http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3408/r2ur9.png]

    Finished texture work on his dome and main body (legs and bottom pieces left to do) - getting deja vu ;)

    For some reason on my new home machine when I try to view the Sci-Fi 3d forums i get a page could not be found error???? So havin to post this from the office.

    Cheers,

    Wiz.

    Well continuing on, a little more work in the rare moments i get to work on him :)

    Updated his blue paint (still not 100% happy with this), added further imperfections, and I also redid his main eye and small lense reticules on the dome :)

    I wasnt quite happy with the end result with the gunge as it stood, preferring the ANH Tantive corridor look for R2 :)

    [image=http://www.astromech.net/Lists/Galleries/astromechs/r2d2/EPIV/images/ANH012.jpg]

    However, once I have done this pass I will see about adding more of the gunge back in :)

    Cheers,

    Wiz.

    Although still not 100% happy with the white body material (the sheen and reflection), some more tweaking me thinks... ho hum ;)
    More work tonight and will see if I can post an update render of this pose looking nicer.

    That looks really good.

    Still Mental Ray right?

    Are you using Max 9 Mental Ray?

    Yeah still using Mental Ray, Max 8 version. Haven't tried Max 9 as yet, might make the switch soon :)

    I don't really use Mental Ray, but the improvements made for Max 9 are a really great reason to switch. Plus Max 9 runs a bit better than Max 8, and it'll be the only version available for Vista (once they put out the update for subscribers on the 29th).

    Well made the switch to Max 9 (much better), and done a render test with the new material types :)
    Also corrected the dome shape, so it should be more accuate now (hopefully).

    :)

    In my experience Max 9 crashes a lot more than 8.

    I like the red one.

    It looks very nice.

    Although the blue parts look very black without the direct lighting.

    So far with my experience Max 9 has run better. The viewports run a bit better and there have been several improvements with different plugins to fix some bugs (cloth is less buggy and so is Hair). I haven't had the troubles that I've had with Max 8.

    Heh, tell that to the 200+ recovery files in my autobackup directory. I have 4, 5, 8 and 9 running on the same machine, and 4 still runs the best.

    I don't even use autobak. But Max 5 was pretty good. Maybe you're doing something wrong, mine doesn't hardly crash ever unless I run out of RAM.

    Not had any problems with it crashing, although on my initial install it did a lot, that was until I added all the additional maps and stuff from the installer now it works fine. Although the mat editor is a little slow.

    Well another render for fun a clean version, just checking out the base materials making sure they are right, also improved the blue bits (I hope :) )

    [image=http://img238.imageshack.us/img238/1334/r2cleanpk1.jpg]

    I am aiming (oh not again I hear u cry), to finally finish off a version of R2 this weekend... and move onto something else.

    Cough...
