Until the release of ROTS on 5/19/05, I would like to discuss AOTC chapter by chapter on the DVD. There are 47 chapters to discuss over the next eight months, excluding Chapter 1: Opening Logos, Chapter 2: Attack of the Clones and Chapter 50: End Credits.

Each discussion will last 5 days. At the end of 5 days, the following chapter will be posted.

    Chapter 49: Secret Union
    DISCUSSION: April 16, 2005 - April 20, 2005
    DVD TIME INDEX: 134:42 - 135:47

    Synopsis:
Back on Varykino, Anakin weds Padme Amidala. A Naboo Holy Man conducts the ceremony. Anakin place his real hand in Padme's and his artificial hand in her other hand. The Naboo Holy Man leaves. Anakin and Padme as husband and wife kiss for the first time as Artoo and Threepio watch in attendance. The married couple then turn to look over the gleaming lake. Iris Out. END OF CHAPTER - END OF STAR WARS - EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

    Opinion:
This is probably the moment, I've waited since Phantom Menace between these two characters. You know by the end of the first film, they are meant to be together and after what they went through in this film why not.

I like this chapter. It works because this is the same place they shared their first kiss. Seems that there's more than escorting going on. This is truly the finale of the film, despite having the Clone Staging Area originally. Paralleling the end of ESB quite well, the marriage scene works. We still have Artoo and Threepio at the end, just like in the other five movies.

And the addition of the golden hand is perfect since Luke gets his artificial hand at the end of Empire. Even though it's really supposed to be a happy moment for the two characters, it truly is the next step in the beginning of the end. Especially with what is to come. Not only ROTS, but Clone Wars as well. And I just love Across the Stars blaring in the background. Nice touch indeed.

It's a really good chapter, wrapping up a really good movie. Two chapters of this six part saga have come and gone. Now it's time to bring on the epic finale of this Prequel Trilogy, Revenge of the Sith. Excellent chapter.

Good chapter. It is very simple and nice.

I can't believe this is the last chapter discussion for the AOTC.

Simple but at the same time glorious ending of another chapter in SW saga. This was also on eof the best love scenes in AOTC.

It's a beautiful ending much like the other star wars endings. But this time it doesn't feel happy like TPM, ANH, and RotJ... there is a sense of tragedy and saddness because of the blarring operatic music and we all know that this can't end well.

Very beautiful scenery around too, and have to love those little droids.

Finally they get married and I can't believe this is over. It seems like yesterday I was browsing AOTC when I first saw CBC.

I LOVE this scene! It is a fantastic end to a fantastic movie. The imagery is great, and while weddings are usually a happy occasion, you get a sense of something unsettling...

I love the scene. It is one of my favourites of the PT so far. They go from the Imperial March to a love theme which I found interesting.

When the end credits came on I knew it was the end but, the first thing that popped into my head was "Dammit, they just had to end with a cliffhanger."

this is my favorite star wars ending - what's so powerful about it is that even though we know where this is heading, even though we know what awaits the glory days of the jedi and all that they stand for, the soaring williams score and the visuals of the wedding scene (including the touching inclusion of artoo and c3p0) contasted with the imperial march and the foreboding sight of all the preparations for war, we alternate from hope to dread as lucas intercuts the two diametrically opositional emotions and intentions. so stirring in imax - i never left before the last note and the last credit.
MOLEMAN!!! could you, would you entertain the notion of a CbyC of RotS?? when we can get to that pathway? i've just enjoyed this part of AotC and Phantom so much. learned a ton from you and other posters. much food for thought but much universal admiration out there. kudos

I think this scene works well, the ending of aotc is the tightest part of the movie.

Thanks Lovelucas for the compliment. Check my sig for what is coming next. :D As far as ROTS, it'll start December 2005. [face_devil]

How could anyone cry during this scene boggles my mind. Maybe when we see the saga together, but when there's still the piece missing of ROTS, it doesn't make me cry.

The friend was an eight-year old girl. She cried in every scene with the two kissing, especially the confession scene. She's a very strange person, or she was. She doesn't cry anymore! :D

Definetly the perfect ending. They get married and kiss. The music was perfect. The visuals were great.

I thought it was a nice touch by Lucas to have her grab his mechanical hand. Sorta ominous, but also a gesture that she doesn't care about his freakish new look.

One thing though that I thought might have been interesting is if Boss Nass performed the marriage. Though he may have been too distracting for the scene.

I don't think Padme would like getting her wedding gown wet with spit.

    BOSS NASS
Meesa now pronsoaune yousa as hasuband and wdife. Abduhadhahahaha!
    ^
Spits. PADME screams. ANAKIN backs away.

    PADME
You idiot! You got spit all over my dress!

    BOSS NASS
    Meesa sorry! Weesa pay money!

    PADME
You will pay for your lack of intelligence!

PADME pushes BOSS NASS over the lake-palace, and he falls into the water, yet for some reason, he does not sink, but floats...

I have mentioned this previously, but I find that the lyricism of the imagery and gentle rhythm of the successive editing perfectly compliments the bittersweet tone of this closing scene. The warm, but sad and foreboding hues which cut into the frame haunt the principle characters, visually conveying the certain and inexorable fate which shall ultimately befall them. The scene, while suggestive of tragic implications, also contains a wondrous display of operatic technique - it is actually a very precarious matter, but Lucas successfully negotiates what might otherwise be a heavy-handed or torpid passage, and instead imbues his material with a natural, effortless grace and lithe sense of movement. Everything seems contained and perfectly articulated - the scene manages to be very moving and perhaps even transcendent, but it is realized with deftness and economy. It is a rapturous close, which sends the viewer into a wistful reverie - haunting, passionate, and deliriously intoxicating.

this is my favorite star wars ending - what's so powerful about it is that even though we know where this is heading, even though we know what awaits the glory days of the jedi and all that they stand for, the soaring williams score and the visuals of the wedding scene (including the touching inclusion of artoo and c3p0) contrasted with the imperial march and the foreboding sight of all the preparations for war, we alternate from hope to dread as lucas intercuts the two diametrically oppositional emotions and intentions.

Well stated, lovelucas. I think that it is by far the most emotionally powerful conclusion to any of the five existent "Star Wars" films - regardless of what anyone else might have to say, I think it's really quite lovely. Lucas is apparently quite influenced by silent films, and through this montage, he communicates his considerable ability for expression in the visual medium. We all know that dialogue and exposition have never been his strong suits, and indeed, this sequence would appear to support that, as Lucas is able to attain a greater depth of feeling, purpose, fluidity, and passion, than could ever be displayed using more formulaic and traditional interpersonal movements. It's a great scene.

I have always liked this scene. It reminds me of the end of TESB. It just mirrors it so well. In the way that Anakin and Padme stand looking at the sun adn where 3PO and R2 are at.
