VIDEO Black Mesa - A Mod for Half-Life 2

The long awaited Half-Life reimagining is coming on September 14th as a FREE download. This is not an official Valve release and so in order to get it on Steam it needs to be voted for on the new Steam Greenlight Service so that it is available like other Steam games and playable alongside the rest of the Half-Life collection.

It still needs votes to gain approval for Steam availability, so anyone here with a Steam account (which I'm sure many of you have) can vote for it if they want to play the 1998 classic with more updated graphics like Half-Life 2 has.

I myself have awaited this since the trailer came out and stated it was being released in 2009. Setbacks aside this should keep many fans occupied for a while, especially as only part of the game is being released with the Xen part to follow later.

I hope sometime the two expansions - Blue Shift & Opposing Force - get the same treatment.

I can't say I was interested in it before I saw the trailer, but it looks so good! It'll be great to see what's changed and what's been kept the same.

From what I've seen of the in-game footage it is pretty much exactly like the original with just a graphic update. The Xen level is being expanded and made bigger to enhance the end of the game, that part will be released seperately.
Hopefully it won't take years to get made like this one has

This should tie me over until Half Life 3, when and if that ever gets announced.

Today is the day, but Steam have not put it up yet. I assume it will take a few days for them to upload it to their system.

Well, it's available via torrent but I don't trust such things because they can have viruses and whatnot attached. I would rather wait for Steam to add it to their store as was done with Awakening

 

As someone who uses torrents (for legal things like linux distros and legally free music) I've not had a single problem. See if there's an official torrent, like on the website or something, and go from there. If they have their own torrent for it then it won't have viruses, it's just when you're looking to get copyrighted software and stuff that you have problems.

I'm curious about something though. Will it be free on Steam?

Since the distributors aren't allowed to charge money for it then it would have to be.

Not sure how long Steam will take to upload it, but I will wait a little while. I would rather download it on their library than torrent it and then have to do it again once Steam puts it up.

Yes.

 

Last I heard, should be up on Steam on the tenth.

 

Finished it, it's great. Graphics aren't exactly state-of-the-art but at least it's not blocky and it now fits better with the rest of the franchise.


Hopefully not long to wait until the Xen part.
