I'm new to the game and was wondering if you can use ESB cards with AOTC cards or ANH with AOTC?

Example: Can you have Anakin on the Light-side and Vader on the Dark-side?

You can combine all of the sets you want. If there are cards that are the same person used on both sides of the table ie. Vader and Anakin then they are contested. Page 44 of the ANH rulebook has a blurb about Contested Units. Basically when the turn starts you bid force on keeping your character out starting at 0 for the dark side (dark always wins ties). Then the light bids force and you keep going till both players pass. Then you total the force you bid plus the build of your character plus 1 for each stacked under him and if you have the most you pay the force you bid adn your opponent retreats their contested unit (and loses no force). This can happen each turn.

Its really confusing to get used to - probably the hardest rule in the book. I would just avoid it right now if your just getting started.

Of course you can mix different sets, but I personaly prefer not to. It kind of "feels" better when you play with cards from the same period - film. There are so many cards that you will have no trouble making a powerfull deck.
