Cricket World Cup 2007

Every four years, the cricketing world gathers together to compete for the holy grail - the Cricket World Cup. The culmination of years of preparation, the World cup necer fails to produce exciting matches, wonderful performances, upsets and controversy.

This years World Cup is to be held in the West Indies. Previously, the Cup has been held all over the globe.

This cup promises to be an exciting one, with mny questions waiting to be answered

- Will Australia, suffering a form slump and injuries, win an unprecedented fourth World cup and third in a row?
- Will South Africa, now Number 1 in the world, finally realise their potential, or will they choke under pressure again?
- Will the West Indies, after years of sub-par performances, reassert their power by winning in their own back yard?
- Will England and New Zealand, on highs after excellent performances against Australia, continue their winning ways?
- Will it be a team from the Sub continent, despite internal strife, who takes the trophy home?

The World Cup begins on the 13th of March and will conclude with the final on April 28th in Barbados. Only time will tell who will be there on that last day.

Sure will. No bias there either.

To be honest, I haven't heard much about them lately. They've always been up there, as their number 1 title shows, but they've never struck me as a biting team. So my guess is on choke. Other teams will want it more.

I heavily doubt it. The Windies have been out of it for too long. The backyard will help, but the other powerhouses will take their shot away.

I actually think England has become a dark horse here. Not sure about NZ yet, but England can seriously do something here. It's actually amusing that Eng and NZ are in the same group (C).

No, because Australia will.

I've looked at the teams more closely now. How did SA and Aus end up in the same group? Aren't there seeds involved in this at all?

 

I think it's just a random thing, and determined a few months out from the tournament (except for the qualifiers).

It does mean that they wouldn't face until the Semi-Final or Final after the group stage though, which is probably a good thing.

 

i think the seedings were taken quite awhile ago, actually, back when Aus were #1 and SA #5 or something. SA have just been in great form in pulling back to their #1 status.

Australia's demise has been overblown - they're still the favourites in my eyes. SA up there too. NZ have a definate chance, though. and you never know with the sub continent teams, one of them could play a blinding series. can't wait.

 

I want to see if Muhammad Yusuf can reproduce his insane form of the last year or so. Checking on Wiki, I LOLed: Yousuf is known for his ability to score runs at exceptional rate & his weird wiggly beard.

I notice that Shoaib Akhtar and that other Pakistan bowler who tested positive for drugs a while ago have both pulled out of the tournament citing minor injuries

 

Mohammed Asif.

When the random drug tests for the cup were announced it was almost certainly aimed at those two. It looks fairly suspicious, considering they both pulled out at the same time. I think that's the last we've seen of Shoaib, although Asif may bounce back...

Drugs always has a way of creeping into every sport. Akhtar was an exciting bowler to watch, a pity that he went down that path - if he has indeed. That would really cut into Pakistan's bowling attack with the both of them gone. Granted, I don't know who they have in their wing. I just can't wait to see the action.

I think Australia are really going to struggle at the World Cup. Losing all form (especially with the ball) is not helped by the loss of Brett Lee.

I think South Africa are going to overcome the demons and take the World Cup (although I hope not!!)

My outsider is New Zealand who have hit form at the right time. Jacob Oram has even said he will hav his broken finger cut off if it does not heal in time!!

 

India's going to win this World Cup

 

India has a chance I will give you that, if it doesnt turn though the chance is gone!

Whoever wins will have to go through Australia there is no doubt about that, my gut tells me Aus, but dont rule out WI and Sri Lanka.

Although I hope England produces a good showing.

Not much to say from the practice matches - the lesser teams soundly beaten (Bermuda was bowled out for 45 against England)

and NZ 4-50... pretty crappy, bettered only by the ridiculous update frequency.

 

I think the BBC is giving good coverage to the warm up matches, thats where i was getting my scores from.

 

I know it's only a warm-up match, but Bangladesh beating New Zealand... That's gotta hurt!

Australia beat Zimbabwe by 106 runs. Clarke and Watson scoring 80's, which is a good sign, although Watson scored his runs opening, which will put further pressure on Gilchrist at the top of the order when he returns, considering his poor tri-series.

 

South Africa struggled against Ireland (all out for less than 200). Unexpected.

Also Kenya pushed WI.

 

And the 127 (approx.)Kg guy from Barbados is an inspiration to us all!...

Why isn't Barbados included as part of the West Indies, anybody know? I am guessing it is the same reason Scotland isn't considered a part of the 'England' team.


What was with Ponting dissing all of the Minnow teams? Poor sods will never get a change in the big time if they get bullied by the best Batsman in the world


Lastly: Over the summer I have had the chance to partake in an online 'fantasy league' for the Aussie domestic cricket season which allowed me to choose team members from all teams and create my own team and score points. Anyway my point is, they are doing it for the world cup as well, I have created a private league which you can join so that you compete against me.
