My absolutely favorite character would have to be King Arthur.

Right now, I'm a very big fan of Matt Stover's Caine. The kind of guy who in the worst possible situation will just smile and flip the bird.

I also loved the main characters in Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness. The society on the whole, really.

1. Severian: The Book of the New Sun, Gene Wolfe ? a torturer whose adventures personified human conditions such as yearning, isolation, and the inevitability of progression like no other tale I?ve ever read.

2. Caine: The Acts of Caine, Matthew Stover ? ?Keep your head down, inch towards daylight.? This phrase from Blade of Tyshalle best represents Caine?s ability to fight through the most wretched and downright filthy circumstances that life can deal you, and yet still get up swinging. As far as heroic characters go, I know of no others that match Caine?s impact.

3. Thomas Covenant: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever - Stephen R. Donaldson ? Despite (or because of) his oftentimes surly and/or downright despicable moments of self-realization and action, Covenant represents the familiar picture of humanity looking itself in the mirror on it?s enduring quest to simultaneously do great good and foul evil.

4. Dylan Ebdus: The Fortress of Solitude, Jonathan Lethem ? To anyone who ever had to face familial and relationship unrest (as both a child and an adult) by escaping to the pages and mindsets of comic books and superheroes, this book is instantly relatable.

5. Hob Gadling: The Sandman, Neil Gaiman ? Hob is definitely one of my favorites. In lieu of dying, he decided to spend hundreds of years becoming a better person.

6. Jamie Lannister: A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin ? Perhaps the best example in fiction I think of in terms of a truly despicable character going through a brutal bout of self-realization on his way to becoming somewhat of an honest, repentant man.

7. Jacen Solo: Star Wars, by various authors (but most notably Matthew Stover and Troy Denning): WTH, a friggin? Star Wars Expanded Universe character? Perhaps so, but Jacen?s also a poignant example of the need to shift worldviews and look towards previously unthinkable philosophies in order to combat life?s tendency to deal cards of twisted fate.


8. Roland Deschain: The Dark Tower, Stephen King ? A character that riffs equally off of Clint Eastwood?s The Man with No Name and Arthurian legend, while all the while consciously recognizing the intrinsic need for the epic quest.

9. Rorschach: Watchmen, Alan Moore: A shining example of the both the danger and value that comes when moral absolutism is translated into action.

My honorables would include Ygritte from A Song of Ice and Fire, Isaac from Perdido Street Station, Lo Lobey from Samuel R. Delany?s The Einstein Intersection, and (yes, I?m serious) Mat from the first four books of The Wheel of Time.

 

Elminster from Elminster saga; forgotten Realms by Ed Greenwood.
Other that him, Muad'Dib from Dune.

 

Rhys from the Merry Gentry series. He's bloody hilarious.

 

Althalus and Em from the Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings.

Althalus is just such a smart arse scoundrel. He does the right thing, but he never leaves his lieing thieving past behind.

It's actually Jaime (Pronounce the J like an H), not Jamie, Lannister.

Alot of my favourites now come from Martin's book; Jaime and Tyrion Lannister, Jon Snow, Davos Seaworth, Daenerys Targaryen.

I also love Berry Rydell from Gibson's LA Trilogy; Drizzt Do'Urden from Salvatore's FR books; Tanis Halfelven from the Dragonlance Saga; Hiro Protagonist from Snow Crash, and a bunch more.

Lord Soth from Dragonlance, the Darth Vader of the series.

Hamanu and Rikus from the Dark Sun series.

Conan The Barbarian the classic swrods and sorcery hero.

I have not read alot of Drizzt books, but I love the character from what little I have read.

 

Orson Scott Card's Ender Wiggin and Bean are two of my favorite characters in any genre. He may not like Star Wars, but the man can write some incredibly nuanced and believable characters.
