Indy 4 will have CGI despite what marshall says. Wire removal, matte paintings and other invisible effects will be used.

So maybe he means it won't overwhelm the movie?

He means no digital stunts or sets, I guess.

No excessive use of CGI like characters, sets, and bluescreen. Obviously the invisible effects are a necessity.

I wouldn't completely rule out bluescreens or digital set extensions. All of the artifacts Indy has gone after in the previous films have had some sort of mystical power. Indy 4 shouldn't be any different. When this power is unleased CGI is very likely to be used.

Only very low budget indie films are made without CGI.

    Oh wait...

No CGI? Spielberg must have dirty pictures of Lucas! :p
Lucas lives and dies for CGI!

If its invisible CG (wire removal, some distant bg extension) that sort of thing is fine. Even for mystical effects if done right. But it makes me very happy to hear that stunts and actors are probably not going to be CGed. Oh so very happy.

Let's hope if CG is used to some degree, it's not any 'Star Wars CG', meaning everything except the actors is CG.

Am I the only one that is horrified by this? I keep having flash backs to the ultracheesy claymation from Temple of Doom.

Fun fact: The Phantom Menace features more models and minatures then the entire original trilogy. Attack of the Clones features even more model work then The Phantom Menace. "It's all CG except the actors," is a myth.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom won Industrial Light and Magic the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1985. So much for cheesy effects. [face_whistling]

But, I love those "Temple" effects. I guess if the budget for Indy 4 is around $100-$150 million then it can't hav too many cg effects. If it does I hope their so small you can't really tell.

But, we all know Lucas's love for effects.....

All three prequels cost about 115-120 million each, so how would a budget of 100-150 million for Indy guarantee that it won't have many CG effects?

Lucas uses what is best suited to make the movie, if that's CGI, then he will use CGI. Star Wars has always been an extravaganza when it came to special effects, not surprisingly if you consider the setting, Indiana Jones less so. There is no reason to suspect that Lucas would change the way he makes Indiana Jones movies, just because he dared to use a boatload of effects in a different franchise, which was always known to be out of this world when it came to this stuff. Some people should stop acting like the old Star Wars movies weren't full with effects and Lucas miraculously decided to use them in the prequels for no apparent reason at all

Apart from that, there is this guy named Steven Spielberg who might have a say in some decisions as well.

I'm really curious as to what the budget is for the Indy. Lucas was able to keep the budgets for the prequels extremely low at 115 million each compared to the 258 million Spider-Man 3 or the 300 million Pirate of the Caribbean: At World's End. Batman Begins and Casino Royale both cost 150 million each and relied more on old-fashion stunt work then huge amounts of visual effects and CGI although they both did use them. Not sure if Indy 4 will cost that much. Spielberg produced Transformers for only a 150 million despite the huge amount of CGI, so I wouldn't be surprised if Indy 4 has a rather modest budget compared to recent blockbusters.

Comparing Indy to SW in terms of the effects needed is pretty silly, IMO.

Indiana Jones films are practically dinky compared to the imagination that goes into SW. Indy is a fun project for George; SW is his baby. Not to mention that Indy's locations/treasures/characters all exist in the real world. :p

There are ways to shoot without CGI in mind. Lucas likes to use blue screen, green screen, and just place actors in front of it and then worry about it in post.

The film will look authentic without the use of green screen technique, but I'm sure, just as some have already mentioned, digital clean-up will be in use during post production.

Well, of course he does. The only movies he made in the recent past have been the Star Wars movies, which need blue screen for pretty much everything, how else are you supposed to shoot those kind of movies in these days?

It is nonsense to try and define Lucas' use of CGI, when he only worked on one movie franchise in the recent past, one that was always far and away the biggest series when it came to special effects. There is no reason to suspect that Lucas would have relied on CGI, if he had worked on something entirely different.

There will be CG, just not as much as in Star Wars.

I wonder if they'd do something like Indy flipping in mid air...

This reminds me of a tour of the CNN center with the FBLA. We were on the tour and they were showing us the green screen used for the weather. The tour guide said "this is the same technology used in movies like Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man, and Harry Potter."

My friend who was standing next to me piped up, "And just about every other movie ever made."

No one makes a movie without CGI. I wouldn't be surprised if some green or blue screen is used, just not in excess.

Are people already forgetting that "Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade" contains a CGI morph during the death scene of Walter Donovan?
