I think part of her charm is the gulf between her persona whilst singing and her general demeanour.

I like her voice, it has a nice colour, but there's something in her singing technique that doesn't fit with me. A bit too "wide", too forced - can't really put my finger on it.

Like Cold Shoulder, Chasing Pavements, Right As Rain, Tired, Melt My Heart To Stone, First Love, etc? :p Hometown Glory is a nice exception, Daydreamer maybe too, but at the end of the day she's filled two albums with songs about failed, failing and doomed to fail relationships. I have nothing against theme albums, but at the end of the day The Family Jewels by Marina and the Diamonds was significantly less depressing to listen to in one go, and it's about mental illness.

I strongly agree with that. She has in my mind one of the greatest voices of anyone in music, past or present, but she seems to me to have a very narrow thematic focus. 19 was tightly focused, 21 had a laser-like focus. As a result, I've only been able to listen to 19 and 21 as a whole a few times each; most of the times I've listened to her has been as part of a giant "British female vocalists" playlist that I have.

Set Fire to the Rain is the only track on 21 that I think matches up to Rolling in the Deep. Although, there's a BBC Live Lounge version of Someone Like You that's absolutely incredible, probably my favorite thing that she's done. (Yes, I realize it's on the album too - I think that the album version doesn't match up to the live version)

Listening to one of Adele's songs puts a smile on my face. Listening to an entire album in one go makes me want to sit on a couch with a box of Kleenex and a bag of Oreo cookies.

If Adele is a colour, surely that colour is beige?

No. Her color voice is the color of whiskey and cigarette ashes.

If you only listen to older stuff, how do you know? You said it yourself: most of the mainstream crap that gets played on the radio is just that - mainstream crap. You need to find other ways to seek out great music, and I can assure you that there is an abundance of it (speaking as someone who loves older music too). That said, it's a bit unfair to lump Adele into the "mainstream crap" category if you've never heard her music. I do think her songs are ridiculously overplayed and nothing remotely earth-shattering, but she has talent nonetheless.

I firmly believe that the past 15 years have been much stronger musically than the 15 years that preceded them. (Whether they match the greatness of the 15 years before THAT is highly debatable).
