Common misconception about canada...that there are misconceptions about canada, if an american says anything it must obviously be true.

All the canadians i ever met said eh and Aboot, all the canadians i've ever heard on tv (actors excluded) talk like that.

That canadians eat canadian bacon...they are really eating ham!!!

That canadians don't use the metric system.

Canadians look canadian and sound canadian although there are americans that look and sound canadian we refer to them as Canada.

Canada really is not agressive so why do you pretend like you are? why do you think american draft dodgers during the Vietnam War all fled to canada? although they were kind enough to write back when i was doing research but they were ok they were once american.

There is no Star Wars in Canada, although we are cooler because during the reagan administration of the 80's the US really DID have Star Wars.

Whoa whoa whoa. Slow down. You're allowed to dislike America, but please don't do it here. Not all Canadians are anti-American, so this will very likely be locked if that subject continues, and I don't want to see that.

If you want to debate your beliefs, then the Senate Floor is a good place to do it. That's the closest thing you'll get to a sanctuary for anti-Americans. The Americans there have spent so many hours defending the moral shortcomings of their country that a lot of them have given up.

    :)

Canada, very nice place. I grew up in Michigan about 2 hours from Detroit. I remember the weekends I would love to go to Windsor(across from Detroit) because the drinking age was 19. Wow I though it was so cool. ;)

I have been to Windsor 6 times? Montreal a few times, Toronto twice, Quebec City once and smaller towns of course. There are alot of similarities to the USA in the anglo part of Canada. And yes I have eaten at Tom Horton's YUM!! ;)
Quebec of course is quite different and also very beautiful.

    What do you think?

I grew up in Germany, in Bavaria. My family moved to British Columbia, Canada, when I was 7 years old. Since then, I have been to Vancouver many times, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Windsor, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, and just about everything in between. Some day I plan to see the rest of the provinces. I believe the country as a whole, including Quebec, is a very nice place to live, and I am proud to call myself Canadian.

I have been to Washington, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York. I think America is a nice country with a lot of great people, but I admit that I do not like American politics.

"Eh" is a friendly Canadian word that expresses the desire for rebuttal or casual conversation.

It's a simple word asking for a response.

That is one of the reasons Canadians/Canada is labeled to be one of the friendliest country in the world.

Nothing to do with the topic, so don't flame me.

I'd just like to say that Canada's a really cool country. I live in Scotland and whilst I have never visited your great nation, all the Canadians I've ever met have all been great.

I'm hoping at some point to come out and work in Canada, as it looks like a really beautiful country.

Scotland's OK, and it's my home, but the UK in general sucks!

And the picture of the skier tieing up that AT-AT rules!!

Yes, Canada has politics. We have several major parties:

Liberal Party - Ruling party. They are, well... Liberals.
    New Democratic Party - Socialists.
Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance - Right wing fanatical nuts. These guys are like the Democrats. Icky!
Progressive Conservative - The name says it all. These guys don't know what they want.
Green Party - Save the trees and legalize pot. All green herbs are good!
Marijuana Party - Too high to have a platform. Basically, anarchy.
Communist Party of Canada - Duh.
Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Canada - See above

Liberals rule. altough i feel sorry for poor ol' Chretien. if they didn't make it a big controversy he could've led the country for a much LONGER time, mesa thinks.

Yes, the Liberals certainly rule in more ways than one. :)

If anyone out there is living under a rock, or in the more northern communities (anything north of Toronto :p), the PM announced today that he will retire in February 2002. Thus, he is not running in the next election, which I think is good, because it would have hurt the Libeal party, I think. It really depends on who takes over from him. Chretien is a good man, but he's showing his age. By 2004, he'll no doubt be in worst shape than the Pope. :p

How did this thread get so badly off track? Back to misconceptions, or YJN will have my head! :p

Reform are more like the Republicans, the Earth is only 5000 years old and all

Anyway, I think we've rounded up quite all the misconceptions that exists, now let's see if we can find some more... I'll just go feed my pet beaver and I'll be back in here

thank you for explaining the politics to me, because no one else would...ok this is a bit of topic, see first we found out an entire country hates our global support admin, we thought it was hilarious so we decided to get a country to hate us but we think you guys are cool so we decided that we want to stop being mean and be friends with all the Canadian people. So we are sorry for being rude, really we have nothing against Canada or Canadians. will you forgive us???

So there really was a recent invasion... I thought I was going nuts there for a while. I couldn't understand why there was sudden increase in the amount of foreigners here. Yeah, you're forgiven. :)

    But don't push it. :p

Hey, look Stina, we're forgiven. All right! :D

You guys are pretty cool though. The fact that it's funny to say junk about Canada is somewhat of a misconception...in a way...kinda...ok, so I'm just trying to put you guys back on topic after we screwed it up, but hey. Seriously though, people really shouldn't cause Canadians are nice and forgiving people :)

Hey I already know you Canadians are cool...I've been there(Canada) enough to know the sweet side of y'all(a nice midwest/southern twang). I mean this as a big compliment, I find most Canadians less aggressive than other types! That's good!
    :)
