No, I loved all the characters introduced in NJO, the Sebatynes, Alema Rar, Ganner Rhysode, Jag Fel, and Danni Quee. All Wonderful Characters

Alema was cool until she went nuts and became a bugslut.

Exactly, I'm upset they ruined her character. She was wonderful up until DN. We need a new twilek jedi. And enough of these goofy LotF and FotJ names... Bandy Geffer, Bazel Warv, Yaqeel Saav'etu, Dordi, Wilyem, and Zal? Those names suck. Hey authors, at least put a little effort into character creation. Allston has rolled out Seha, Kolir, and Sanola. Those sounds like real Star Wars names there

Alema was so much fun to read in LOTF for me. Sure it stunk at first that she survived when Anakin and Chewie didn't but I could empathize with Alema for some weird reason. I also liked Raynar in FOTJ.

Alema was a tragic character all together, with her sister dying early on. Numa Rar haunts her for a bit.

I always liked Alema. One of the few characters in the Post NJO Era that I didn't have a problem with. Very tragic.

She filled an odd role, it wasn't just twi lek jedi. She was like the new kid joining the Solo crew

In NJO yes, but from there on she branched out. Character development. I'd say that as a character she did far better for herself than Lowbacca or Tenel Ka.

That's because Lucas had his panties in a bunch over wookiee Jedi, and they put Lowie on the back burner. Tenal Ka was always dull.

The problem with Alema Rar is not with any aspect of her character, it is that the arc of her storyline made no sense. Luke knew she was going to fall to the dark side. He states it flat-out. Yet nothing was done to prevent this. Alema Rar is a victim of the Jedi Order descending to a really poor place, one that it has occupied more or less continously post-NJO, and of all the rather poorly handled developments that occurred in that timeframe.

The problem with the Jedi Order in the EU entirely is that they fall into the reactive rather than proactive, which is not to say warmongering or peaceful. I mean, there are all these slave problems in the outter rim, yet it isnt until they start exploding that the Jedi even begin to notice the problem. The point is simple, prior to Outcast they could have been working to stop the exploding slave problem. Even the old order has knights like Qui Gon and Obi Wan who were proactive to a point. I would argue without their involvement in EP1 we would have had the Clone Wars start at the point in EP1, except without the clones. The Jedi have no foresight, which is the biggest problem, whether it is dark side rehab for Alema, Anakin rehab for tahiri, for all intensive purposes, Jaina should be falling apart from killing her twin brother. yet it is easier to be like, yeah that didn't bother her at all...

I'd love to see a depiction of a more proactive Jedi -- Jedi who are actively seeking out trouble spots and pacifying them, traveling the galaxy and righting whatever wrongs they come across or hear about. Instead, we get a bunch of Jedi sitting inside the Temple, doing nothing, apparently just waiting for a war to erupt because that's the only thing they can do nowadays, fight wars. The PT Jedi are generally better, but most of the time they're going out in response to some request for assistance, or on a Republic assignment. It's fairly rare that we Jedi traveling and seeking out ways to intervene on their own initiative, and less rare but still too rare that we see the Jedi leadership as a whole identifying problems and responding before they've boiled over into a crisis.

    why?
also why do you care so much?
I think it's good to get more characters, although it can be annoying when an interesting character is introduced and then forgotten about

    Agreed on all counts.

It isn't even that hard for them to do: the next time Han, Leia, [or insert POV character] is in a seedy bar somewhere, just have them bump into a random Jedi, who's off on assignment, spying on [that dude over there on table 4]. No need to follow it up any further (though I'm sure it'd then prompt calls for a dedicated novel about it, so win-win for Del Rey).

Or when there's next a scene on Coruscant in the Senate, have whoever the story is about bump into a Jedi who's currently shadowing some senator as an escort, or because they're investigating corruption, or an assassination, whatever. There's loads of easy ways to show the Order as a whole is actively doing something, and not just the two or three characters in a given story. They manage it for military officers, with occasional namedrops about them being off dealing with some local disagreement, so there's no reason they shouldn't be doing the same thing for Jedi.

    "Can Soontir help?"
"No, he's busy working with the Chiss in the Ascendancy."
    "How about Corran?"
"Er, Master Horn, he's er... er... busy. Yes, busy. In the Temple. Doing... something important."

Nonono. You make the story ABOUT investigating corrupt senators and spying on people in cantinas. Fighting wars isn't the only thing Ben can do, and frankly, skulking in cantinas for information and spying on crooked officials is more Han's speed these days anyway.

Oh, you can definitely do that too, yes.

But I was pointing out that the 'backdrop' in which these characters are operating should also represent a living, breathing galaxy, where all those hundreds of Jedi are doing things at the same time, showing that it's not just [insert novel protagonist] who is the Official Jedi Knight of the Month that's been allowed outside the Temple.

Look at the Republic comics: you constantly saw characters bumping into other characters during their different arcs. You knew that Vos wasn't the only Jedi allowed outside that week, and that there were other Jedi doing other things at the same time.

My point exactly, the Jedi were trying to get consulars on every planet. If a mission to naboo, perhaps a not annoying gungan Jedi guarding the region. Lowie on Kashykk, maybe one of the Horns on Corellia (at the Jedi outpost there), or at this point Sothais Saar on an outter rim planet.

But there are so many Bothan Jedi, second only to Human Jedi, and perhaps Barabels. Why not give the G Canon species some Jedi love? Talz, Ithorian, ect...? (I realize bothans were mentioned in 6, however not pictured)

    Poor Em Teedee

Anyways, I agree completely that more proactive Jedi have been a long time coming. I don't know about anyone else, but 2Jedi in particular always stood out to me in the Prequel Era. Anya Kuro and Jon Antilles. Both of them were known for breaking the mold and roaming the galaxy, letting the Force guide them as they went. This isn't to say all Jedi need to do this, but when you have such a large setting as the SW galaxy and there are places where injustices are being done and problems exist, it seems stupid for the Jedi to not being searching these things out. Especially when time and again a problem has turned up that could've been nipped in the bud long ago if the Jedi had been more active in the galaxy as a whole.

I could see Kyp leading a small sect, that just kind of hangs out in problem areas as literal vigilantes.

I loved Alema and the potential she had. I thought she would make for a great character and for the start of DNT I liked the way she was going but then she just seemed to fall apart a little and by LotF I'd lost all interest in her.

This is one of the few things that could be a possible nice side effect to the Mortis/Apocalypse tie in. We know that a group of Jedi has been sent to look for the dagger and if a series of books were to be written about that search they could really explore these Jedi travelling the GFFA and coming across such instances where they can be proactive whilst also furthering their search. It probably won't happen but I'd certainly like to see it.

Exactly bring it back, let him be the roving Jedi. "Durron appeared as hologram, he was off on Ord Mantell dealing with the murder of an heiress" or "Durron what are your Jedi doing? Hellin is busy doing... Bann and Altimak are off on... Bwau'tu is on Nar Shada dealing with the Hutts...
