Disney buys Lucasfilm and Episode 7 in a couple of years?!?

Wow. When I first saw the article in the local paper at lunch, I couldn't believe it. Bought by Disney? New movies, sequels?? DISNEY ?? I actually wondered if it could somehow be a prank.

But seriously, 2015? All other things aside, doesn't that seem a bit soon? How will it be ready that fast?

Fan reaction has certainly been polarized! Everything from giddy-excitement to anger, mourning and visions of dancing, singing ewoks.

 

Initial fan reaction on my part would be trepidation. There are too many unknown variables at this point. Some thoughts...

1. This will likely cause the brand to become more diluted. Don't know if that matters.

2. For better or worse, I believe GL is the best creative force (no pun intended) behind Star Wars. Could be strange to not have him around, though I understand he'll likely be involved in the new trilogy.

3. John Williams is getting up there in age. Soon we'll have someone else scoring Star Wars films. This could take some getting used to.

4. There's the possibility that new actors will be playing the classic Saga characters, which will be tricky and hard to pull off. Imagine someone new doing Han Solo. It'll be weird at first.

5. I'm all for more movies if different stories and times in the Star Wars universe are explored.

6. Let's hope that this is like Disney's handling of Marvel, and the Avengers.

7. May the Force be with us all.

The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The new trilogy will carry the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.​

I suspect Ep. 7 will conflict with stories in the EU, even hallowed ones like the Thrawn trilogy, which will inflame and alienate many of those fans.

I have a feeling the EU is history at this point. A pity, because I enjoy the novels. I never really cared for augments over canon. Basically whatever GL said or appeared in a Star Wars film seemed to trump all.

I suppose that the EU will just have to recon itself in the wake of the inevitable changes the new movies will make.

This is the first time I've actually been excited about SW in the last several years. Makes me want to re-do my pilot costume.
