This thread here, friends and neighbors is for discussing the love story in AOTC. Did it make all weepy and teary inside? Or did you sit and groan, counting down to the next action scene? Give us your thoughts, which will be preserved forevermore.

Whether you accept it or not, the love story is a big part of what was responsible for bringing back disillusioned fans from TPM.

 

It could have been better, but let's just say I have been expecting the worst, yet I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't cringe or anything. IMHO, it was believable, therefore it worked. Especially Padme's confession to Anakin was a very beautiful scene. Much better than I expected.

 

I really bought it. I must say without Hayden it might not have worked. I loved the looks he gave Padme like he was totally in love/lust with her. I also felt Natalie portrayed the fact Padme was totally attracted to Anakin (Who can blame her!) I admit the rolling in the grass was abit much and the picnic was too idealic. However who couldn't help but fall in love in that beautiful setting. I felt that they had chemistry and we all needed to see how Luke and Leia's parents got together - I personally can't think of any other way it could have been done.

 

Love story worked. I believed they were in love. The lines were corny... just like dialogue in a love scene should be... no one actually quotes Shakespeare or speaks in "cool" poetry speak when they are trying to get close to another person.

Their love scenes was much more realistic than people are willing to admit. People fall in love and say silly things when they are falling in love.

RB- I agree, I said it before in 'just saw it' thread. It's very real dialogue. Anakin is a Jedi and Jedi don't talk to many girls unless they are Jedi in which case they have no chance. This is the first girl he has really tried to get with and the way he tries to touch her and what he says is what we did when we were 13 or 14 especially when it doesn't work and we get confused and frustrated.

Yeah Padme's confession was maybe the best scene in the movie.

I wish everyone would read the book because Padme is in such turmoil over her feelings. I can't wait to see this movie!

 

I really enjoyed the scenes, but I can understand people thinking the romance feels rushed. I liked the rolling on the grass, especially right before. When Padme runs up to Anakin thinking he's hurt, Anakin turns over and starts cracking up. He really looks happy as can be, which is quite heartbreaking knowing things to come.

 

I think the romantic aspect of this movie is pretty good. Nothing great. Like Scott said, it's a little rushed. Maybe even a little contrived.

Nonetheless, it serves the story. It's not too distracting. The romance in ESB is better written. (And acted out)

The romance in AOTC won't go down as one of cinema's all time greats. It shouldn't be compared to Romeo and Juliet. It won't rival Casablanca. Even Raiders Of The Lost Ark had better romance.

That being said, TPM had no romance. ANH had precious little. And for the record, neither does Star Trek. LOTR really has no romance. The Matrix? Ha!

I just wish Lucas and company didn't make a big deal about the romance in this movie. He's just setting himself up for some serious backlash.
He shouldn't have said anything at all. And that way, people going into AOTC won't be looking forward to some great romance. And Natalie Portman comparing the AOTC romance to Titanic's is a big mistake.

 

Spoilers*** (but you shouldn't be on this forum if you want to avoid spoilers anyway)..

Bits of "romance" slightly cheesy, bits believable and bits really poignant (cause we all know how it turns out..). One thing that I realised is that at the end, when Anakin does get "married" or whatever to Padme, it is without Obi-wan's knowledge as he just states that Anakin's gone back to escort Padme to Naboo.....

The Jedi doesn't know 'how they feel about each other'...in fact, I don't even think they suspect anything going on b/w the two. Obi-Wan kind of glanced at Padme and Anakin when Padme came over to help Anakin up, but that could be more concern for Anakin then anything else. I'm not even sure if Obi-Wan suspects anything here.

 

The romance was very rushed, and was reduced to the lovers speaking in topic sentences, constantly stating exactly what was going on as to the status between the two, not very realistic. But there wasn't time to make this into a romance movie. A romance movie dedicates an hour and a half to two hours to developing the romance. This movie gave twenty minutes or so. There was so much going on everywhere else in the movie as it was. So they hurried things along, which when you think about it was necisary because it was a time of war and all. The urgency of current events precluded them from beating around the bush too much. I guess because the romance was forbidden there was always a sort of combatative stance between the two, which detracted from their ability to warmly flirt with each other. It was an act of courage to reach out to each other romantically. The whole "I truly, deeply, love you" thing was over the top. The acting was good. Not Oscar good, maybe Daytime Emmeys good. The chemistry was there. I liked the romance in ESB more, but that was a whole different situation and different characters. Harrison Ford is a much different lead than Hayden Christainson, and Indiana Jones doesn't go around proclaiming his love all the time. Leia says "I love you," and Han replies "I know." There's so much more dignity and coolness in that romance. But that's not what this one is about. Both Hayden and Natalie flaunt their sex appeal, and are successful, I think they will be sex symbols because of this movie. Overall, the romance served it's purpose, moved the story along, and was sufficiantly gratifying with only a few eye-rolling moments. It's not the movie's strong point but I wouldn't call it a weakness. Maybe I'll like it more when I see the movie for the second time. I'm not sure if I took everything in.

If Hayden could act at the beginning of the movie, and George could write non-corny lines, then I'm sure I would have been involved a lot more.

 

I've had a day to sleep on this now so will be less gushy (if that is at all possible).
I bought the soundtrack today and heaven help me but I had tears in my eyes when I heard the love theme.....I had been expecting a really corny wedding at the end of the film and was caught off-guard by the short, low-key scene. Seeing Anakins arm (the one luke cuts off, of course), knowing that Padme would soon be dead and Anakin, a Darth...I felt really, really moved and sad. Aim achieved - I do really care about these characters (and not sure how I'll be taking in Darth Vader in the OT next time that I see it..)

 

I think they have great physical chemistry more than anything that was said between them.

True, but it was more developed than Han/Leia romance in TESB.

I agree, some lines were very cheesy (especially Anakin's lines in the scene where they're on Naboo at night in the room with the fireplace, or the scene before they're taken to the arena), but both Hayden and Natalie made out the best of them. Really, the romance seemed very believable to me.

 

Can I make ONE request of this thread? Let's not compare apples and Oranges. I don't want to hear H/L are better or A/P are better. They are two different things altogether. Just critique the love story in it's own context.

That being said.. I CANNOT wait to see A/P! *sigh* I hate college..

 

The love story was just bad, with aweful dialog. It was definately rushed, but the vows did make up for it. I think that love story would've been a complete disaster, without Hayden and Natalie. They definately did a descent job, despite the aweful dialog. Their acting was a bit off during the love scenes, but that was mainly due to the aweful dialog. I think that is the only thing that prevented Hayden and Natalie from being on the same level as Ewan and Chris Lee. Hayden was frekin' awesome in the Tatootine scenes, but good, but not great in the love story. If the love story had better dialog, I think that Hayden and Natalie's performances definately would've rivaled Ewan and Chris'.
