I was reckless with my boning as well, and it works fine. I just used a really think fabric for the interfacing and that worked really well. But then I kinda flew by the seat of my pants for most of the costume.

I use a quite soft boning so it adapts to my body.

Today has been a really nice picnic-day. I've sewed my blouse, I love the big puffy sleeves, and while I was waiting for a friend I went into a shoe store, and found myself a pair of really nice and comfortable, white ballet slippers!

I was in the checkout line today and saw a prom dress that made me look twice on the cover of the Seventeen Prom Issue. It's a strapless yellow satin dress with a sheer skirt and floral type decorations on it. Definitely seems picnic dress inspired :)

Well, at least to someone in love with the picnic dress :)

Here's a link to the magazine...

Wow Katherine, I agree that totally looks like a Picnic inspired prom dress. It continues to take over the nation!

    Hey all :)

I found those black ballet slipper shoes that a lot of us got at Payless in white and silver at Shoe Carnival. I didn't buy them, but thought I'd mention it here if anyone is interested. You can also order them online in even more colors from the manufacturer (which is different from the Payless brand):

    Rocket Dog Shoes/Ballet Slippers

The only drawback about these as potential picnic shoes, they have the words 'Rocket Dog' emblazoned in gold on the back of the heel, where it is visible. But, they do seem sturdier than the Payless version.

Dawn, I remember seeing those at a shoe store around here, too! Maybe it was DSW or something. They caught my eye because they had them in silver, and I thought they might work with my rainbow dress. But when I tried them on, they pinched my feet. :( And they were also rather expensive (certainly more than $8!).

My friend tried on those Rocket Dog shoes when we were shopping for her wedding shoes.

We couldn't stop making jokes about "faster than a speeding tennis ball.... it's.... Rocket Dog! Rawrrr!"

    Hey, Dawn...
so, is the "Rocket Dog" logo molded into the shoe, or just printed on?
If it's printed on, it might be worth testing a little corner of it to see if nail polish remover will get rid of the logo without damaging the shoe.

What a random brand name for such a delicate looking piece of footwear. :p

It was just painted on, if I recall correctly. And I agree, the whole 'Rocket Dog' term is just strange. [face_laugh]

Rocket Dog-- [face_laugh] Funny name indeed. The shoes look great. I have a pair of black ballet slipper shoes that I love, love love! They are leather and have one strap across the top of your foot. They are the most comfortable shoes in the world, and come in white and brown and several other colors--Great shos for Cons. They are made "Just Libby" (of Sam & Libby) and you should be able to find them at department stores or online. Of course I always feel like a princess when I wear such delicate shoes--but these are sort of special to me (yes, what a sap--I'm attached to shoes) But my aunt gave them to me after I had made one of Sydney's costumes--and the card said "Every good fairy needs a pair of beautiful slippers." Awwwwww..... :_|

And Yes--that Prom dress does look similar. Life imitating art!

Her pictures can be seen here:

    Petite_Padme's picnic dress

    You did a beautiful job, Petite_Padme. :D
It looks like you made your own sequins with the butterfly punch too. Hope your hands didn't get too sore from all that punching! LOL!
It also looks like you used the Sulky when you embroidered the corset. I've used it once on another project and have to say that kay_dee was right about that stuff. It works great! :)

Hope to hear all about the details from you! Plus, if you want me to add info with the pics about pattern numbers or the fabrics you used, etc. just let me know.

Wowee Petite Padme! Nice work! I think it's fantastic how you were able to incorporate some of the techniques shared on this bboard to make a very authentic picnic gown. I'm glad my sulky techniqued worked out for your embroidery - as well as Obi-Dawn's hand punched white flower technique.

You should be proud of your creation - Congratulations!

    -Kay Dee
