This is a continuation of the original Padme's gold flower outfit thread.

My purpose for making this thread is to consolidate all of the knowledge and suggestions spread throughout the lengthy original one. There are new people interesed and/or intending on making this beautiful costume joining us all the time, and I want to make the information already gathered easier for everyone to access.
Our on-going conversations can also continue here. :)
(Forgive me if I overlooked anything or missed crediting anyone with their suggestions. There was a lot of stuff to sort through! :D )

[link=http://simplicity.com/assets/5843/5843.jpg]5843 view A[/link] has recently been released for Halloween of 2002. It consists of an underdress with a corset over it. This is a simplified version of the actual costume and would require modifying to be accurate. It is a great pattern for anyone wanting to make a costume that *looks* like the dress but it is not exact.

Suggested Fabrics:

-satin/crinkle satin (silk or poly)
-siam
-metallic crunch gold home deco fabric from JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby
-coutil for inner construction

Embroidery:

The corset is embellished with a lot of embroidery. The front panel is heavily done in an intricate design of yellow and gold 'flames', 45 light and dark pink roses, green leaf motifs, and light yellow daisies. Here are two interpretations of the corset embroidery design:

Great job, Dawn! Thanks for all the effort you put into this! I know it took you quite some time to complete!

Also thanks to everyone who contributed to the first 25 pages in the old thread! It has been an invaluable resource for me, with my dress!

Indeed a huge Wow!!

Now if you feel like doing a similar all purpose thread for all the various Jedi costume bits that would also be a huge help!

Oh and someone needs to update the FAQ right away to point to this message for sure.

Quite impressive. But then, we wouldn't expect anything less from someone who's redoing the entire corset, hand embroidery and all. ;)

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. :)
Halloween was also a consideration when making this because I hope it does help new costumers who may find their way here.

Just joining everyone in saying the new thread looks great! You certainly are dedicated to this dress. Nothing wrong with that. Out of everything I've sewn, I think I've enjoyed this dress the most!

Also, has anyone had any luck finding a ready made brooch for the dress? I do want something to finish that top edge and don't trust my skills to make any jewellry type thing...

Katherine,

I really think that the pin on the cape is a silver bar brooch. I've been searching for some online and I may check out antique jewelry stores too.

I've also started searching for shoes again. I wish the DVD for episode II would come out in October instead of November! Here is one lace-up shoe I'm considering - You can order it with a low heel in white:

I'm not sure I want to spend $100.00 though.

I've done some looking for the broach and there are tons of butterfly and dragonfly broaches out there right now except they are all really big and colourful. Michaels has butterfly charms. The best thing I've seen so far is a pewter one, but its still to big and none are just the right shape. ebay also has a lot. I'm going to check out some antique stores today.

Obi-Dawn this is fabulous!!
So much better then I have ever
imagined!! Thank you a million times
over!!

I have updated my messy corset
sketch (not in colour..sorry) and I
am thinking of attempting to make
the gold swirl embroidery pattern
too! I think I might have enough
pictures to make it... and I know
I am going to attempt it.

There are tiny filigree silver
pieces at the Bead Shop
but they are filigree.. and not solid
like I think the original piece was.
Still I am considering using one
since they are soo cute.

Thank you very much Obi-Dawn for all this hard labour.
You'll find everything and more for making this lovely dress, which will be my next project.
I just finished (well, almost) the Rainbow Dress, and got already the fabric for the corset.
It's now so much easier to go on with this dress, so again, thank you very much!

Still no pictures from otakon of my new shawl yet. I'm still looking.

In the mean while, I'm taking a trip to San Francisco on the 18th to visit my beloved Nando and do touristy things. He told me he was going to take me to Britex fabrics to wow me, and look through the remnant section (because we are but poor costumers) I thought while I was there I could look for that ribbon on the head band. Any tips on where to find it in the store?

I'm making a mini-mockup of this for an 11.5 inch before I do a full-size. I really should go get one of those Padme dolls on clearance but alas, I have no time. I'll be disappearing for the next week--canoe trip in the Boundary Waters. Maybe when I get back, eh?

Yet another grateful admirer chiming in. Thank you so much, Dawn! This really is amazingly helpful! I know you're really busy with real life, too, so that makes this extra special!

afaeryschild - would you be willing to share your new embroidery sketch and the gold stabilizing lines, too? I used yours the first time around and it was incredibly helpful. I think I'd like to combine it with Dawn's for Version #2, if you don't mind. :)

I'm planning to build my dressform next week, so I can actually get started with the Corset #2 Mockup. This time I'm not touching my corset fabric until I've got the pattern exactly how I want it. Made that mistake the first time around and had to run back to the fabric store for more. :)

Happy sewing, Everyone!
Regards,
M.

I've been to the antique mall. They have tons of broaches. None quite right but its a great place to look for one, I only had time to get about half way through. I saw some broaches that had a ribbon on top holding other things underneith ie:a locket, and was thinking that might work if you get rid of the locket its about the right size and shape. any thoughts. liannb

Van - When you go to Britex you'll find all the ribbon on the 4th floor. If you can print up a photo of the headband ribbon one of the sales people will be able to get it down for you (that's if they got more of it in stock) When I last purchased mine it was on the shelves to the left of the cash register as you face it. It was on one of the upper shelves there.

liannb- I visited a few antique stores today too. I'm glad it sounds like you found something that will work. I think I'm going to order something I saw online in a simple silver bar brooch. I know it's not the exact pin used on the costume, but I think a small bar brooch is the right idea anyway :)

MiraxTHorn,

The new embroidery sketch is
at this thread's corset section
or here

Yes, the old one was okay but
it had mistakes.. I'm sorry!!
The new one has less (or
hopefully none) and it is the
one I will be using for my
corset..

The gold swirl pattern is
under construction. I'll let
you know when it's complete. :)

Are you going to cut out the gold sqaures on your corset. If so are you just going to embroider the edges down or how do you plan on doing it. Is anyone else making their cape from scratch or is everyone using the tablecloth? I'm not sure what to do for a pattern to embroider the roses and vines on.
