I'm actually quite surprised that there's no photography thread around (unless I'm blind and have missed it). But yeah, been getting into photography the past few months since I studied it as a module for my Journalism degree. Bought my own camera (Nikon D40 with a Tamron 18-200mm lens, as well as the standard Nikon 18-55 kit lens it came with) and have been steadily building up a portfolio on Flickr. Here's some of my personal favourites that I've taken these past few months:

Random question, but how do you like the 18-200 lens? I sometimes use an 18-275, but have issues with the focusing (even with the image stabiliser). Were those samples shot with a long magnification? Auto or manual focus? They have great clarity.

It's a very good lens considering its price, however I've also noticed problems with the focusing, most especially when you're at full zoom in poor light (say at a show or gig). The only pictures from that selection that were taken with the Tamron at a particularly long magnification were the pictures of the squirrel and the man under the tree (which were taken today btw) and even then it wasn't full magnification (maybe between 70-125mm).

I'd love to be able to get this lens, but I'm not made of money :(.

Oh, and always, always manual focusing.

Those are all very good. Make me nostalgic for England. ;) I'm using a point-and-shoot but I'd like to upgrade someday soon. I shoot mostly landscapes:

Took these on a friend's fancy digital camera. The rest of my photos were shot on film and I haven't gotten around to digitizing them yet.

That's an amazing picture! Sports photography is something I'd like to get into, but it costs so much, what with ticket prices being as high as they are. May try and get into some lower league football matches as they're cheap as chips and I can sell them onto local papers. I'd have sold my horse racing pictures on, as I've a contact who distributes pictures to the press, but I didn't have access to a laptop .

    Bokeh :D

    Thank you :).

I'm not actually into sports photography in particular, but I've been at three games now for my alma mater and being on the field, it's only natural to take a few shots of the action. I would never be able to handle dedicated sports photography and the interest isn't really there either. Still, nice to be able to capture a few images now and again.

I should note that the ISOs for those two images I posted are (in order) 6400 and 10,000.

What camera have you got?! Canon EOS 5d Mark 2 There's like...no noise. If I even go to ISO 800 on my piddly D40 it's like someone's pasted static onto my pictures.

Perish the thought of a Canon. Actually, I don't perish it, because Canon has a wider and better selection of prime lenses, and that may be eternally tempting for me.

I have a D700 and probably will use it regularly until it has gone the way of the D1 for the rest of the photographic world (the D1x still makes nice images, by the way).

I do prefer Nikon's, but the 5d Mark 2 is a damned sexy camera. Borrowed someones when I was last in London and it was so, so good.

Just looked up the D700 and I was quite surprised how low the amount of pixels is, especially considering the quality of those images at such high ISO. Did you have to run that through anything to reduce the noise?

This is why we can still be friends, Josh. ;)

Some of mine (sorry, for whatever reason you can't see the full-sized pictures on Picasa if I use mark-ups and I lack the time and motivation at the moment to move them over to photobucket):
